Norilsk is A pretty big city. Over 150,000 people live there. For its size and location it’s even called the coldest city in the world. And obviously there is a reason for this. Look how today, 27th of May, 2016 city looks. Four days till summer
The purpose of a good accident prevention poster is to place fear in the hearts and minds of workers, to make them fear breaking the rules, show them where breaking the rules can take them. And some of those classy vintage Soviet workplace posters are right on point with this. See them here, translated for you. First one above says “Take away your hair”.
This village in Russia is lost deep in the woods. There is no road leading here, except this old rail road. You can’t get here by car. In case of emergency, a person has to walk 40 kms to get to the nearest place. It is surrounded by swamps. Two times a month a small, old train with only one car comes here. Thanks to the Russian blogger Grifon, we have a chance to peek into the life of people here. Let’s look!
Some people took an effort to take shots of the same places famous Russian photographer Prokudin-Gorsky has caught on camera over hundred years ago. They travelled there, framed everything exactly as it was. The result is pretty cool!
While landing, planes are very vulnerable to missile attacks from the ground. Especially when they are landing in Afghanistan. Especially during war time. Especially if those planes are huge transport IL-76 planes. So over time, Soviet pilots have developed a unique method to land their 150 ton heavy planes. They call it “An Afghan Landing”. A huge IL-76 comes to the landing strip from the opposite side, then makes a very sharp turn and… lands! Just a crazy trick for such a huge plane. Take a look at an actual Afghan landing made in Kabul, Afghanistan airport in 1989. Also inside is one more video from outside:
A few photos from the first in the world (?) or the first in Europe (??) or maybe just the first in Russia, flying spaghetti monster, or Pastafarianism, church. The one whose adepts take a photo with mesh colanders on their heads for driving licenses, and the ones who say “Ramen!” instead of “Amen”. Take a look.
That’s not some theme park of any sort. Not a museum. This is the so called “Gypsy Capital” – a village in Moldova where the majority of the population are gypsies and they try their best to show off. And it looks like they have succeeded, just look at this St. Peter’s cathedral in the middle of nowhere. More inside.
Just if someone asks you “How is it to live in Russia?” you can show him these pics. Just another sunny day in Russia: any day in May you can get a snow outside like this if you live in for example Noyabrsk city. You have to go and find your old shovel to dig out your car before going to work.
People of Stavropol, Russia have got a hail storm recently. Many car owners got their cars damaged. Lesson was learned. Now, another storm is forecasted and in anticipation of ice pieces falling from skies the motorists take the precaution measures in advance. Some of those are pretty hilarious, take a look:
A few days ago on May 11, there was so called “Day of Republic” in Donetsk. Please take a look at the photos.
