On May 21, 1979 Elton John gave the first out of the eight Soviet concerts and became the the mbrightest western rock musician performing on the other side of the Iron Curtain. The Soviet authorities had to demostrate “openness” and “civility” in advance of the Moscow Olympic Games and they chose Elton John to do it.
Being already very popular, he performed in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
He visited the Soviet Union with his mother, saw a football match in Russia and Petergof.
His bright visit was impossible but real in the USSR of the time.
He stayed in the Soviet Union a bit longer than a week. Elton was offered a a “Chaika” from the governmental fleet of cars, a tour manager and interpreter Natalia Ivanova. She still works with western stars…
He was saying though that he came to Russia not for money, and if he needed money, he would go to the USA.
The USSR was exotic for Elton, and he became a breath of fresh air for the Soviets.
