Maikop is the capital of the Adygei Autonomous Region of Russia. According to the most popular version, the name of the city originates from the Adyghe word that means “the valley of apples”.
Maikop is comparatively young, it was founded in 1857 as a military fortification that was a strategically important place in conquering Circassia. Today Maikop is populated by 140 thousand people. Maikop is considered one of the best developed and most beautiful cities in North Caucasus.
