Doomed Settlements of Chukotka

Doomed Settlements of Chukotka

These settlements used to be prospering and good, they were inhabited by miners, airport employees. fishermen, reindeer-breeders. Today Chukotka has many ghost settlements left by people – Valkumey, Apapelgino, Yanranay, Komsomolskiy. It’s hard to believe now that up to 4 thousand people lived in some of them. The mines were deactivated, and the settlements were doomed to die.

  2. There are hundreds of these in the Western United States. They’re called ”Ghost Towns”. When the mines turn dry, the people flee.

  3. The communist sickle and hammer tell the story here. Prison housing in a remote area and eventual starvation and escape, if one could. Sad.

  4. There was nothing wrong about building those cities, USSR being great or not. Time was different with different transportation solutions. I mean, now Russia is also going with small settlements for workers only, not the families, because we can easily implement shifts.
