Abandoned Splendor: Baryshnikovs’ Estate A splendid manor of the nobility in the Smolensk region of Russia strikes with its interiors and arouses just one question – “why does it have such a miserable condition now?” The estate of the Baryshnikovs of the late XVIII – early XIX centuries in the style of the mature Classical period is located about 100 km away from Smolensk. Some say that this object is one of the largest monuments of the the culture of the nobility despite its current miserable condition. “Object under the guard”. Cosntruction of the estate began in the early 1780s and lasted for over 40 years. Baryshnikov had a huge collection of artworks and a wonderful library. The estate included a school of peasant artists and a peasant orchestra. The main house was built in 1819-1823, and this structure is the most interesting. In the war time, the estate was occupied bu the nazi and suffered from military actions. After the war, the territory was used for a school, and later – for a kindergarten.
