Dreaming of the Sky: Model Aircraft Construction in the USSR

Dreaming of the Sky: Model Aircraft Construction in the USSR

Model aircraft construction was rather popular in the USSR. Even small cities had their own journals related to this topic, their own clubs. Children and adults made flying and non-flying models with their hands, arranged regional, municipal and international competitions.

These are some photos of a famous photographer Valentin Khukhlayev (1916-2010), correspondent of the Soviet photo agency “TASS photo chronicle”.

  1. I built model airplanes in the 1950’s. It was a great hobby and I went on to become an engineer. I’ll bet many of the kids in these pictures had progressed into engineering or another type of technology career. Great photos! Thanks for putting these up.
