Life Of A Worker And His Family

These pictures were made in the mid 1950s by Edward Clark for LIFE magazine. Just a photo report about the life of an ordinary Soviet family of that time. No Photoshop, the documentary of the epoch. Things that aroused interest of Americans back then are also interesting to Russians nowadays.

  1. Life was cramped in those days. The boy with his portable bed, fetching his sheets and blanket from under his parent’s bed….and evidently sleeping in the same room. Yikes, no privacy…

No milk bottles? Buying milk, in a bucket brought from home?

  2. Unemployment was prohibited in the Soviet Union. Otherwise the militia arrived home to find out if drunkenness or laziness were the cause of unemployment. Today the unemployed are not cared.
