Soviet Childhood: The Yard As a Whole Universe

1

Children used to meet in the yard and make friends for the rest of life. The yard was a whole big organism, a universe where everything could happen. With the first warm rays of spring sun it woke up and actively seethed till late autumn. Everyone knew everyone. As if they lived alltogether in the same flat. Nothing could be hidden – neither joy, nor grief.

  1. Well, kids are the same all over. The picture with the boy’s tongue stuck to the flagpole is of course from the American movie “A Christmas Story”. This is a perfect childhood scene, and would obviously not be out of place in any yard, anywhere in the world.

  2. Good times!!!
now if a passerby stops to photograph a group of children, he risks a report to the police if not a lot of punches on the face!
