Citizens of Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, were shocked to see the new floor in a shopping center “Alem” in details. It was not hard to notice that the floor contained fragments of gravestones with portraits of the dead… The administration of the shopping center admitted this shocking fact and put the blame on the contractor that was responsible for the construction works and purchased the materials.

  1. Its hard to believe that the workers and the contractor did not know what they were doing. Did they think that placing the face fragments from a cemetery was some kind of joke? A lot of blame going around but so far no real answers.

  2. Actually it is not so bad an idea.
    It is one way of memorializing the dead people.
    This way they may be remembered.
    So tiling the floor with their portraits may have been accidental, but the overall result is not so bad.

    • If you want to remember a dead one, you put their entire photo and the NAME of the deceased. You remember them PROPERLY. The way these picture fragments are used is totally disrespectful and a BAD idea.

      “look, a half picture of my deceased babushka! And people are stepping on it!”

  3. I think the contractor tried to be a comic. His idea of a joke fell flat. The whole effort is not funny or even interesting.
    He should be required to remove the face pieces.
    Russian humor can tend to be a bit raw but this is intolerable.
