Soviet Union in 1985

Year 1985 was an important year. That year Soviet Communist party and Gorbachev started declaring their “new course”. People were not afraid, they got used that top official words mean little for their everyday lives. But not at this time. Who could just imagine that because of this worlds their life would change drastically, the things they got used would disappear and the Soviet State itself would cease to exist just in a few years? And this is how the life looked just on the verge of all this:

The all mighty KGB headquarters in Moscow with Dzerzhinsky monument which was demolished later (and in 2016 the case opened to “investigate the destruction of Dzerzhinsky monument”). Weird.

    • Because everything was corrupt. Everything was state controlled. You could not buy anything in store. You could be jailed at any time for any made up reason. If you were male, you had to serve in army for 2 years.

What you see on the pictures here is how 5% of the country was, 95% was a big dump with no roads.

Look at North Korea, it is also very serene looking and really so nice.

    • “Revolution”? Nobody was killed in a “revbolution” when the Soviet Union disappeared. But maybe there was a bloody one in your far away, alternate dimension.

        • @”DAS666
…”a lot of people killed in the revolution…”. Really? How many? Write down your number and reference, or don’t bother to write back. Butthurt doesn’t count.

    • The profound changes you call “revolution”, were actually very peaceful by all standards. But if you want to keep showing your ignorance and prejudice, no problem for me.

  1. Hi!, nice photos, i´m impressed with the blue sporty car in the 5th one, looks great, what model is it? is it soviet?

    Cheers

  2. Quite a lot of Tbilisi here. The outlandish concrete monument about half way through was erected during the reign of Andropov and was nicknamed “Andropov’s Ears” by Tbilisans. It was demolished about 10 years ago.

  3. Page 1, Pic 1… Can anyone identify that stylish blue two-door with the louvers?
Page 2, Pic 1… Is that Donald Trump?
Page 4, Pic 6… Klaatu Barada Nikto! The aliens have landed… with a church!

  4. Beautiful Holy Russia, over 1000 years of history and struggle under different Czars, different governments under the Czars. So what is communism, a puny 70 year pimple in the timeline of Russian history? What matters – the Russian people will always survive regardless of what government system exists.

  5. Garbage gorbachev betrayed and destroyed USSR. He should have been hanged on the Red Square and the planed dissolution of USSR should have been annuled. Too bad the part of KGB was also in this scam whti CIA and the traitor gorbachev. May he rot in hell forever.

  7. Gorbachev or any singular person could not have destroyed the Soviet Union. That is foolishness to believe that, too simplistic.

It doesn’t matter if Gorbachev or Mickey Mouse was in the seat of General Secretary. Gorbachev was just one man and just one man could not do that.

The Soviet Union’s economy and industry were very neglected for decades, due to excess waste and focus on military but neglecting the common people, the domestic economy.

As Mr. Putin recently said, Lenin lit a time bomb under Russia, bringing Communism to Russia. This is why Mr. Putin has no interest in reviving the dead idea of Communism in Russia. He knows it is a failure and it is better to let Russian citizens themselves govern their lives.
