Wedding in Dagestan

Wedding in Dagestan

Dagestan is part of Russia, and here is a traditional wedding out of Dagestan. Yes, people are shooting into the air and it is considered necessary and appropriate in this land. What else is necessary and appropriate? Let’s see inside. Nick has traveled to Dagestan and brought these photos back:

Wedding in Dagestan

The place he visited is located near the Dagestan capital city and has an elevation of 1,500 meters, in the mountains. This place used to be a fortress before.Wedding in Dagestan

Nick and his friends arrived early, at 10 am, and was greeted by Munib, the wedding organizer. Wedding in Dagestan

Thats Munib, he invited them to the wedding. So first they went to the groom. Wedding in Dagestan

Nick says that lowered cars are a hit in Dagestan, so the lower your car is the cooler you tend to be, it doesn’t matter that you are living in mountains where the roads aren’t the best available. Many carry two planks in the trunk to get over obstacles like speed bumps.Wedding in Dagestan

So these are the friends of the groom, apparently. Wedding in Dagestan

They got into the cars and Murtazali, the driver, told them that people used to celebrate weddings two times: one time in the groom’s house and one time in the bride’s. However nowadays they do it this way only if the groom and bride are from different places. If they are from the one village, like this time, they have only one party. Wedding in Dagestan

Nick says parents in Dagestan start preparing for the wedding as soon as the baby is born. They think about the smallest details, the type of the dress and the hair cut for the future bride, etc. Also, youngsters can marry only when their own house has been built. So this pair first decided to marry and then it took a couple of years to build the house that you see in these pics. The house is complete: built with rocks, having a kitchen and even curtains and bed sheets. Wedding in Dagestan

So later the cars arrive at the bride’s house. Wedding in Dagestan

Those are the bride’s friends. Wedding in Dagestan

They help her to get prepared. Wedding in Dagestan

And then things roll pretty normal for any region: dancing, drinking, eating.Wedding in Dagestan

  1. Just fine . The photographer is excellent .
The subject , wow . Being allowed to take
a look into someones life a treat .
    Thanks English Russia

  2. They drive cars and try to adapt to modern lifestyle with their traditions but wtf shooting firearms??? I mean when I got married in the orchard next to my house in France we didnt shoot FAMAS to celebrate the wedding… they can adapt to 21st century a little goddamn…

    • Don’t be such a douche bag. Not everyone should be like you (thankfully). These guys live in mountains, if they wanna shoot firearms, that’s up to them. It’s very strange that what is happening thousands of miles from you and has no impact on you disturbs you so much.

      • You would be surprised that this tradition (with shooting) is still alive in many, many countries. It is common in almost all slavic countries. Especially othodox.

        • dekip, please don’t tell a lie here. Wedding shooting is not slavic nor ortodox tradition. Wedding shooting into the air is caucasian tradition. Russians take it as threatening behaviour. Caucasian wedding shooters have been arrested in Moscow over and over again. BTW cold steel arms is official part of traditional caucasian costume.

          • 🙂 You kidding me. I sure know how was on my wedding. And for every wedding that i attend. Without a weapon it’s not a regular wedding. Plus, we when come to a bride’s house have to shot an apple which is very high. Please don’t talk about things that you don’t know.

              • dekip, Once again, wedding shooting is not slavic nor ortodox tradition. Try to shoot in Moscow or St.Petersburg. I bet You will be arrested for 15 days.

                • Andrew, I know well the Caucasus and the Balkans (my wife is a Muslim from Bosnija). Of course you are right that it is a traditional feature of Kavkaz region but many Slavic weddings in the Balkan region (not so much the Croats of course) also feature celebration with shooting. Nothing more to be said on the matter.

    • Dagestani are muslims, but wedding was rather traditional caucasian, with alcohol. Christian caucasian highlanders have about the same weddings.

  3. Beautiful village, beautiful people…thank you so much for sharing these photos with the world!

I hope the bride and groom have many happy years together.
