Moscow State University: Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry of the Moscow State University, named after M. V. Lomonosov, opened on October 1st, 1929. Previously, chemistry had been taught here at medical and physico-mathematical faculties. These are some interesting images of the Department of Chemistry of the most famous Russian university: old and new ones.

  1. Very good set of pictures. Focus was more on the buildings tho. Most of the chemistry there is classical, this is at the early years of Education. I am sure they do good research there. Will be nice to see pictures of their modern analytical instruments, people who use them, some results from those.

Amazing institution. Here are the related sites:

    http://www.msu.ru/en/info/struct/depts/chem.html

As per this wiki, the founder was very well learned, dedicated all his time to this and was even an artist !! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Lomonosov
The study of Chemicals lead him to art.

This is extremely impressive. It is sad that inspite of using so many chemicals, learning geometry etc., most Chemists stay away from art these days. Art can bring the country side relaxation to the stress in the Laboratory, Industry.

When I worked in the laboratory for research and later in Industry, all the technology, challenges and dead lines etc., made me feel lonely, sad.
My graduate research was on using surfactants for catalysis/solubility, in Industry I have used HPLC mainly. I no longer work in Chemistry for a while now.

Something was always missing very deeply in my life, I realized that no money or other gains can satisfy this need. Glad I rediscovered art much later in life. Now this has given me great dept, satisfaction, meaning for life and I am very happy, content.

  2. Due to my interest in art, I have asked questions here about art materials and landscape artists in Russia. Now I am also interested to know more about the instruments used for Chemical analysis in Russia, mainly are these made in Russia also or do you import them mostly ? The funny thing about this site is that while there is easy access to nuclear missiles and submarines here, no info. was provided so far on the questions I have asked so far here. Perhaps this is too specific to be of interest to a broad audience. So, I will just google for info. on these. Thanks anyways.
