The Main Battle of the Afghan War

The other day there was held a reconstruction of the main battle for Hill 3234 in the Afghan war in Saint-Petersburg. In 1988 thirty nine Soviet paratroopers opposed between 200 and 400 special units soldiers trained in Pakistan.

The soldiers of the Russian army were trying to reach a besieged city, Host, and take humanitarian supplies there. The Mujahideen rebels were sitting in ambush and waiting for the Soviet soldiers. The battle lasted twelve hours. The Mujahideen finally retreated. Out of 39 Soviet fighters, six died, and twenty eight were wounded, but the rebels did not manage to take the hill. As a result, Host was liberated, an autonomous Islamic state was not formed.

  1. Seems like it would be kind of hard to reenact that in the city. Just not the same.
But was driving the truck into the pond part of the show?

  2. Why do they re-enact bloody war scenes in Russia so much. It seems that the main business of Russia is wars past and future? Strange minds.

  4. hmm… it took 10 years for Taliban to gain control of Afghanistan after USSR departed. With US forces still present Taliban is at 80-90% of its 2001 strength. What is going to happen when they leave? Just look at Iraq. 1013 people killed just in Jan 2014 by or fighting against Al-Qaeda and that is in a country were their were NO terrorist present before US forces invaded. All that without a super power fighting against US… Don’t laugh at events you don’t comprehend.

  5. Is that the same hill as the movie “The 9th Legion” (orginal “9 rota”) from 2005 by Fedor Bondarchuk is about? It is a very good movie anyway.

    • Yes the movie about this, but the reality has nothing…. Real 9th company lost 6 people, destroying more than 500 militants as was much better prepared, had air support and a dominant height…….
