In 1966 when the Beatles said good-bye to their fans giving the last concert in San-Francisco, far away in Soviet Dagestan they started construction of a hydropower plant which is the largest vaulted dam in Russia today.

Look at the steep slopes of the Caucasus and you will understand that construction of the dam was far from being easy. In 1970 the works were postponed due to an earthquake.

Construction of the dam was finished in 1974 but its industrial usage began in 7 years after that when the necessary infrastructure was available.

The hydrogenerator is the heart of the HPP. Energy is produced here. The HPP produces as much energy as a small country, for example, Angola, does.

The place is very harmonic. Both the objects of nature and human creations look huge and magnificent. And it’s a nice place for a dam. Would you like to fish there?

  1. To me most Hydro dams having great values: not just produce electricity; also regulate the water flow, and keep the water in a artificial lake. For that matter would be better for fish to grow; and people could fish with much interesting way. Before hydro dams was build; the rivers water just going to the Ocean or seas; now that water start to be mo useful and not waist by the river end .The nuclear power plants is danger’s; we have already a few examples in some countries, and France having the most ones, which if real happened a nature storm, or a war, just about al Europe will be contaminated. And radio activity will stay for many years. Hydro dam’s could be also been destructed by the same way, many people die, but the ones still stay alive, will continuing living and the dam be reconstructed again. Russia having many rivers; many creeks that could be converted into new hydro dams, and slowly will scrap all the nuclear power plants. Not just safe doing; also thousands of people could have the beneficial way by getting work, and in the long run the world will be mo safer. A.Oscar

  2. 1966 was the best year in Rock music (according to me) and the poor Soviet youth were shut out and destined to only get Dean Reed. Great dam, by the way; way to go!

  3. Don’t listen to the last comment, the Soviet youth didn’t even have to listen to anglo-saxon rock bands as there were soviet rock bands too. Poor anglo-saxons were not destined to listen to any of them out of cultural ignorance.
