We’ve already visited the flight center in Torzhok and seen how trainings there are held. Now we prepared a more detailed story about this place.

Helicopters are often called “blade wings engines” and it’s certainly not an accident. Essentially a helicopter rotor is a rotating wing with very complex aerodynamics. It is harder to control a helicopter than an aircraft, and of course it the hardest thing to fight an air battle and destroy enemy tanks. It is necessary to say that the fighting center is something like “a base of knowledge” for military helicopter pilots, it is not just an educational complex, but a real flight-research conglomeration with the huge experience of actions in different situations and in different military engines. In short, it is a unique place.

The 344 center of the military use and re-training of the army aviation is located in Torzhok. The center itself is a rather big complex that has even a museum on its territory. The helicopter museum is a fenced area where 14 models of battle helicopters are collected.

This cannon helicopter, painted white and marked by the letters UN is the helicopter with its own history. At the beginning of the new millennium this Mil Mi-24P was on the peacemaking service in Sierra Leone. During a low-level flight the crew drew some water, broke several equipments, but didn’t dive into the depths completely, at last the crew saved itself. For this incident the helicopter was named Calipso and decorated with a suitable drawing. Currently the helicopter reached the end of its service life, it’s decommissioned and it became a donor for other engines.

The Russian army as a whole always had problems with financing. And the army necessities were always numerous. Some military units even organize money collections, but this is of course an extreme and forced measure.

Nowadays the helicopters Mil-Mi-24P, Mi-24PN, Mi-26, Mi-8, Mi-28, Kamov Ka-50, Ka-52 and several modifications MTKO, MTV-5 are on the center service. The Mil Mi-24P and Mi-24PN are used by the group “Berkuts”. The helicopters Mi-28N arrived in Torzhok about 10 years ago and are still “untested”. The trial operation started. All flights of military helicopters are registered by the audio-video recording system. The video register just shows what is happening and the audio system controls the accuracy and timeliness of the crew’s actions. Firstly a pilot pronounces his every action that simplifies the analysis of possible errors on the ground.

  1. A. Bunka here. ATTENTION: Look out for Spyware on this site. I got bite, they hide it in the toolbar. This is not a joke…

  2. Is it just me or does it appear that they have 3 or 4 working helicopters and the rest are all mothballed or used for parts?

      • I’ve noticed they do have that “moth-balled” appearance about them but it’s not complete somehow. Maybe it’s because the environment isn’t like the environment on US Bases. On US Military Bases everything is kept up to a particular standard.

The Russians don’t seem to have the funding for that stuff that we do over here or maybe they don’t understand or care about the psychology behind it all.

It’s a constant for us in the US Military, we take great pride in ourselves all the time everyday.

I know the Russians understand the psychology behind it and seem to care a great deal when they are parading around with their tanks and missles in Red Square.

So I suspect it’s a funding issue with them.
