This is Russian Federal highway Moscow city - Yakutsk City, named “Lena”, nowadays.
The road doesn’t have asfalt surface, though it is a Federal, vital highway.
Everytime it rains the road gets paralized, these shots are made a few days before the traffic jam for 600 cars got stuck there. Hunger and lack of the fuel followed, according to the witnesses. One woman gave a born to a child right in the public bus she was riding.
Construction team afraids to appear on site because during their previous visit it was beaten by people who stuck in the jam for a few days. People breaking the locks on the trucks, in a search of food and warm cloths.
Fuel, food, firearms and steel tow-line are the things that are needed most these days on this Federal highway.

Once upon a time a foreign tourist decided to visit USSR on his own car. He crossed the border and soon his car was broken because the road condition was nearly the same as on the pictures above. When a highway patrol finally came to help him to get out of there he sad them angrilly:

How much does it cost every time this happens, to get people out? The cost of damage to vehicles, the cost to people, the cost to get equipment in and drag cars out, the cost to bulldoze parts of the road etc…?

Yeah, this is Russia. It’s not the typical state of Russian roads, however - this is quite an extreme. Moscow has several strategic roadways going out in the 4 cardinal directions - these are completely paved, high traffic highways. The road in the pics looks like it’s a winter road - in the summer, when it rains, it becomes a long strip of mud, which is quite logical and not atypical of any unpaved road.

Bloopy, If thay road was a dry, dusty, dirt road that DID have rock and gravel on it and was drivable, no amount of gravel or rock would improve it once you have a deluge of rain like that. It would be just like those pics with mud up to the axles once you drove on it. It would push the gravel right down into the mud. We have it all the time here in Arizona, during our rainy seasons. Especially on the Navajo Indian reservation, whose roads are 90% dirt.

In Canada we build roads through this kind of country and climate. When the frost comes out they disintegrate until they dry out. It’s very expensive to build them, not every county can afford them. People who live on backroads get to drive on roads that would look just like that if that many vehicals tried to use them. It’s a real shame only wealthy people can afford to fly into a major capital.I notice many of the vehicals are transports. It would really help the Russian economy if goods could move around a little easier. Hoping things get better for Russian people.

Cheer up Russians! This road seems to be quite extreme. It maybe difficult for people in warm and stable countries to understand how extreme weather conditions affect roadkeeping at northern latitudes (> 60 degrees north). I hope that you get this road fixed soon.

1. This road is in a mid of Siberia, starting next to Mongolian border and going North for 1500 km.
2. Class of this road was (and still remains, as permanent one is under construction) “Zimnik”, i.e. winter served road. No permanent bridges on rivers yet.
3. Either during hottest summer soil remained frozen at depth 50 cm and below. On a surface it’s just mad.

Look, people, it is a winter road! Do you know how long the winter is in that place? At least for 9 months! During this time this road is absolutely fine since it is covered with snow and is frozen. It would be absolutely ineffective and very stupid to spend a lot of money to build a proper road there since most of the time the road is covered with snow! And everyone knows that, only stupid people would use this road in the summer time.

Yeah theres nothing special about the road, in Northern Canda there are many roads can end up looking like that in spring after the snow and ice melts and it starts raining. Its realy expensive to lay asphalt on a rode in northern climates because in spring as the ground thaws the road cracks so you would need to constantly fix and repave the asphalt, not to mention that its useless when covered by ice and snow. Im asuming important roads are generarly in excelent shape in most parts of Russia.
One thing I found funny reading the replies was all the people from densly populated countries with warmer climates being suprised at the condition. Well this is what hapens to roads in Siberia, Northern Canada and Alaska.
Oh and by the way when it doesnt rain and the road is re-flatend and fixed up again then you can easily do 100+km/ph on a gravel road like that.
One more comment the people in those cars are total idiots for trying to drive on it in bad weather, if they waited a couple days then the road would be fine…but no they obviously all tried driving on it before conditions improved and destroyed the road, they should all be fined,

Sure but the difference is that this is the main road to a city of 200,000. No Canadian or Alaskan city anywhere near that size has highways that get like that. Canada has paved highways going thousands of km to little places like Yellowknife and Whitehorse. Even the gravel highways to tiny Labrador City and Inuvik can be driven year round.

Somebody here said that this is not a vital highway and that it isn’t used except in winter. That person didn’t know what he’s talking about out. This ‘highway’ is the ONLY road to the destination, and it’s thousands of kilometers long. This is not just one patch of it, it’s almost all like that, right after the Ural region is left behind. The people that use it have no other choice. That’s the only way to get to hospital, another town/village, transport produce, you name it.

It is unfortunate that people have to deal with such conditions, but mother nature will always be stronger than human kind. There are a number of reasons, why the road is the way it is, but making assumptions without solid facts is unfair.
What saddens me even more is the insults the people write to each other on this website towards the different nations. I’m not biased, because I was born in the eastern block (Czech Rep.) and have been fortunate to enjoy the luxuries of the western world (Canada) for the past 19 years.
People need to start helping each other, rather than turning on each other and being judgemental.

You say in the blog entry that the road ends up like this after it rains — how often does it rain out there? Also, do Russian citizens have any say in the current government?

I am blogging this message from Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada and to tell you the truth… I will never ever complain about the shape the roads are in back in Saskatchewan. This is terrible! At least in Alberta we know how to build a highway and maintain it, too!

Being a Russian, I would like to comment. In such a huge country, you can surely find a road like this ( btw it never happened in my life, even though I have traveled a lot), but it’s very uncommon and in no way reflects the state of roads in the country. Well, knowing geography one would realize how remote Yakutsk is. A Russian would say that Yakutsk is located in the middle of nowhere.
There are disgraceful pictures and events everywhere, in US, Europe ect. The question is whether you can judge about entire country by them. All in all, I think is that articles like the one above create very negative opinion about Russia, leaving apart the stuff they write about us in foreign mass media. For somebody it’s still very convenient to show us in a bad light and nobody certainly needs a strong Russia.

Well, as you all can see, there are construction works going on here. I have got stuck in Sweden, Finland, and on Kola Penisula as well. This is not a typical russian road, but a working place.
The publishers of these pictures deliberately provoked most negative comments from people who do not know Russia. To play honest they should have included more information about this Moscow-Yakutsk road. For instance, the fact that it is over 2500 miles long, and it does have asphalt on those sections which are in European part, as well as in Siberian part of the country until the latitudes, where there exists such phenomenon as permafrost. It is waste of money and labor to lay asphalt on permafrost: only the guys from Northern Canada and Scandinavian countries understand it. The section of the road in the pictures is a special winter road (”zimnik” in Russian), it is good for trucks 9 months a year and it should be used in accordance with its purpose. Unfortunately, the authorities in that part Russia, where these pictures were taken, seem to be unable to regulate traffic on this permafrost road, while travellers do not have enough brains to understand what risks they take driving in summer on a winter road. To play honest, the publishers should have mentioned the location, where the pictures were taken (for instance, 200, 300, or 400 miles to (or from) Yakutsk etc.)

Some decades ago, here in Brazil, the government tried to built a highway crossing the Amazonia Forest, called Trans-Amazonia. Then they give up. After all, they tried to built a highway through a fucking tropical jungle. It can be warm there, but it rains 12 months a year too.
Now the situation is pretty much like this road on the pictures, except that it can’t be properly used the whole year.
I was there, but it was dry in late summer. Not bad at all, dirt yes, but speeds of upto 120 km/h possible.
Problem is that temperature in winter is minus 40 centigrade, and 40 plus in summer. No matter what surface you made, it had to be reinforced by 4 metres of concrete. It’s not just a question of rolling out asphalt.

If they elevate the road with gravel and sawdust mix, add ditches, drains , culverts and an asphalt surface, there would be no problem. The Alaska Highway runs into similar terrain and yet it is all paved.
There are indeed roads like this in Canada, and Alaska. The Alaska Highway was much like this when it was first constructed. Right into the 1960s you could encounter these conditions. It was not fully paved until the 1970s.
With global warming, there is more thawing of permafrost, and this is causing once stable highways to crumble. There are even whole towns that may have to be relocated or at least reconstructed as the superficial clay becomes gumbo such as you see here.
As was noted, winter roads are useful in resource oriented areas. they are graded reasonably flat in the fall, then when the ground freezes they have high capacity. In fact many winter roads in Canada run down riverbeds and across lakes. There have been many articles and a few TV shows and movies written on these, as there is still an element of danger in that water crossings can have thin spots develop, and vehicles crash through.
Such roads can even be developed in cities. In Edmonton, there used to be temporary winter river crossings made by piling up snow on the river and then compacting it. This was not done on the main river, as it would cause flooding in the spring, but on lesser streams where the flood would not cause great problems.

I think that building roads on the surface is impossible in large parts of Russia anyways- because of weather conditions and the permafrost. The only thing that one could try to do is to build motorways and main roads on viaducts from one good spot to the other- build that would be incredibly expensive- if feasible at all.
Here in Lithuania we have snow and winters and heavy rains and long springs/autumns too. But we still have better roads…
