I can’t believe that some commentators can see “anti-russian” propaganda here. Well, if showing different and interesting sides of Russian life is “anti-russian propaganda”…
All those “i’m russian and i’m offended” make me sad. What’s wrong with all those deadly serious people?

It seems as though it might be by some of your word choices and your sentence structure that either English is not your first language or you learned it in conjunction with another language when young.

i just wanted to say that this site is indeed excellent and shows equally positive, negative and neutral aspects about Russia from the past and modern times. The comments are thoughtful and the photos are always top-quality. To be self-critical and self-analytic is a great quality and the author of this site has always done an outstanding job. Long live English-Russia!

By: Anonymous http://englishrussia.com/about/#comment-3062740 Wed, 02 Mar 2011 17:54:09 +0000 #comment-3062740 Re: “Nazi Fail”.

I’m not a Nazi supporter since my grandparents are Jewish themselves. My college thesis was about World War II since it felt close to me and what my grandparents went through as Jew’s in Germany. During this time, I met with a lot of people and did my own research around WWII, Hitler and his party and even modern day Nazism aka Neo Nazism.

At first, I was sickened by a lot of what I read. But some things did stood out and made me re-look a lot of what I was taught as a young Jewish boy. (I’m now no longer practicing Judaism or any faith for that matter.)

I’ve come to the conclusion (which I also wrote in my thesis paper) that Hitler and the Third Reich wasn’t racist. They believed that everyone was equal, but that it was important to keep your race and your heritage clean. And that every people in this world, were given by God a place to dwell, with their own culture.

So when the Nazi war machine was going, is it then so hard to believe that they used Muslims? Africans? After all, Hitler saw them as equals, even saying that “the Japanese are the Aryans of the East”.

Hitler didn’t want to exterminate entire races and cultures, he just wanted them in each of their countries. And the fact that he allowed Africans, Muslims and Orientals into his ranks proves that.

I’m still 50/50 on the Holocaust though despite my parents are rather unenthusiastic to my “new found” beliefs since they are practicing Orthodox Jew’s living in California.

So is it strange then that many Russian Neo-Nazi’s accepted Hitlers beliefs? That every race belongs in their own country?

Andrea Merkel, David Cameron and even the French president have admitted that “multiculturalism has failed”. So despite being of Jewish background, I can agree with many of the Neo-Nazi’s. I just wish they’d be more political and less brutal about it.

go to you tube and see the stuff. why the other day on a major tv network, they showed a video of a traffic cop stopping a car and getting out to check the driver and another car crashes nearly into him, why I have seen Russian videos of the same thing.

Now HERE is what I look for in “english russia” and in other russian pictures and videos.
the little things that show daily lives of russian people, the tools they use, the houses and crops. a tiny object on a window sill can reveal more about the village life than of 10 books.
people who throw rocks should not live in houses with large windows! often the angry critics have issues of their own, like they do not like their own lives.

Both in Russia and in America, the amount of wealth one has does not always equate to personal happyness.
[some of the happiest kids i have seen are the Amish kids, they do not belive in electricity, tv, radio, the internet, or even cars. horse and buggy and horse plows for them, and the clothes are all black.

What did I find on this page? A green Russia, a Russia, that ist full of fun and humor. I see abandoned places, I have never heard of befor, but they give me the picture of a high devoloped country.
Russia became human and stopped beeing political to me. It made me so curious that me next longer trip will be to Russia.
Btw: I cant´t speak or read a single bit russian, please translate some texts or pictures.

Even then I could not believe that such a large population could be monolithic and focused on my destruction. This site is one of my favorites. Everyday i get to see the humor, the beauty, the love, the art and resilience of a great people. It has become an obsession with me to spend a year along the shores of Lake Baikal. From the pictures presented here I am in awe of such a place.

The only thing I would ask more detail of is when presenting artists that detail is given. It would have been useful to know the sizes of the watercolors done of the Winter Palace. Such exquisite works. Also the Moscow show it would have been nice to know who the artists were that were responsible for such innovative work.

Keep up the outstanding work.

By: M. Dussan http://englishrussia.com/about/#comment-2398320 Thu, 30 Dec 2010 00:20:45 +0000 #comment-2398320 Hey Rob and all those who get so upset about so called negative propaganda about Russia on this blog! This is a great site with great photography and sometimes good commentaries. It features modern Russia and gives a bitter-sweet views of the former USSR, its people, cities, culture and yes,… its horrors. There is nothing here that Americans or people of the entire world for all practical purposes don’t know already about this part of globe any way. Remember, the Iron Curtain was lifted a few years ago, and people travel back and forth these days. Also, modern technology made it possible to learn almost instantly about Russia and its system for those who are interested. And those who are not, will not look at this blog any way. Plus I really think that stuff presented here is pretty balanced: its a mix of good and bad as… the country itself. Trust me, I know what I am talking about!

So, cheer up, get a life and stop whining and work harder on changing your corrupt and oppressive government. This would be more effective way to express your pride in your country than the outbursts of anger for no reason and the demonstration of total lack of sense of humor. I thought some Russians know how to laugh…

Sincerely,

M. Dussan

If nothing else it’s made me want to visit Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe. Sure,, some of the pictures are sad, or negative but for the most part the people look fun and interesting, the country itself looks beautiful. Even the abandoned and run down buildings are beautiful in their decay. Hopefully I’ll get to see these things myself sometime in the not too distant future and it’s because of this site.

In any case, love the site-spent quite a bit of time in that part of the world, and yes, parts of it were quite depressing. On the other hand, other parts were quite beautiful. This is no different than any other place on earth-The US, Western Europe, Middle East, etc… Every country has beauty and filth, it’s the human condition. Simmer down, guys. I promise we evil Westerners don’t think any less or more of your neck of the woods after visiting this site. Cheers!

Russians have a very good sense of humor and they can laugh at themselves.

I don´t know what I was writing.. but I got my 1 year visa to Russia 1 month ago and I have visited Saint-Petersburg and Kaliningrad. I really liked my trip, stayed in both places 5 nights each. Russians are polite and helpful. Going back to StP on 28.10.

All of the scenery is breathtaking: Landscapes, abandoned buildings, cities, ladies (:p). Sure, there are some very trashy looking individuals, but every country and culture has them, and I think it’s very backwards thinking to not show any of it. Sure, no country wants to be portrayed negatively, but it’s about balance – there are plenty of beautiful people portrayed on this site as well.

In fact, my least favourite thing about this site is the hatred in the comments of different citizens towards each other.

By: Marie Tern http://englishrussia.com/about/#comment-1654243 Sat, 11 Sep 2010 08:01:25 +0000 #comment-1654243 In 1982 I spent 4 months traveling in the USSR and Eastern Europe. (I worked for a travel company) I met some wonderful and hospitable people and it was an experience I will never forget. However I was unimpressed by the constant surveillance we were under and the general extreme paranoia. I had my camera film destroyed for taking photos of country cottages, According to our Intourist guide/KGB informer, apparently I would go home and say ‘all Russians live like this’! How strange I thought, I’d rather live in a picturesque cottage than an ugly ‘modern’ high-rise. I remember driving through Moscow and seeing the alcoholics lining up for their vodka, at the same time the guide was stating ‘there is no alcoholism in Russia’ Our diaries were read to make sure we hadn’t written anything ‘negative’ about the USSR. Did it never occur to them that we could still talk about our experiences.
OK, well that was then, times have changed, but from comments I have read here some Russians still believe that you should (and need to)censor peoples thoughts and comments. That’s sad!

The team (Stealth.Unlimited, http://stealth.ultd.net/) which curates this year’s edition of Impakt Festival under the general theme Matrix City (http://www.impakt.nl/index.php/festival/festivalintro_2010), is very interested in presenting some pictures of the private metro system built by Leonid Murlyanchik (and even the documents allowing him to construct that metro tunnels, if available) at the festival. We would like to get in touch with the author of these photos:

Could you perhaps help us out tracing the photographer’s contact details and getting in touch with him?

I am in total disagreement with all of these, I think this site give those of us in the west of europe a superb view of Russian life.

Russians appear, from what is shown, to be able to live your lives with a great deal of happiness even though many families are living on the breadline.

In western europe most people are only concerned with money and possessions and do not live happy lives any more.

Stop all the criticism and consider the benefits this site is providing by showing what happy lives people lead and how beautiful your country is.

In closing, my thoughts go out to all those affected by the wildfires.

Not to say my view before was negative but i was ignorant. This website did not make me view russians poorly at all i began to see them as extremely similar to americans. we are all so alike, i sometimes forget how small this world really is…

A lot of them are amusing in some way and they tell me that people over the world are more similar than they care to admit.
I am disappointed in the negative and aggressive comments that I find with some contributions. If you don’t like what you see, why not leave it?

By: Andre Roubideaux http://englishrussia.com/about/#comment-1365905 Thu, 01 Jul 2010 17:06:53 +0000 #comment-1365905 Heyo,

I have spent hours pouring over this websites photo library and videos. Before I believed Russia to be a decaying corpse of the USSR. In few regards this is true, but for the most part it has opened my eyes to the youth and culture that still remains in Russia.

I love seeing the rusting train yards and abandoned houses. Simple beauty. Grunge is a popular trend on the internet, especially photography, so I don’t understand why displaying these things is considered an insult. Maybe you can clarify?

From my own cultural backgrounds I am part Native American where living conditions are very terrible. Yet, their candor and willingness to survive in the midst of urban decay is beautiful and actually encouraging.

Also I am an student in architecture and I love seeing modern Russia juxtaposed next to the decaying Russia. Awesome!

Thanks for doing all this work! One day I DO WISH to visit Russia and see these things for myself,
A.R.

By: Dirk Rijmenants http://englishrussia.com/about/#comment-1340081 Sun, 20 Jun 2010 09:53:24 +0000 #comment-1340081 Hi, I’m from Belgium, Europe, and really enjoy viewing the photos for more than a year now. They give a fantastic look at how people live now and lived in the past. The little and big things in life.

I don’t believe that only negative things are shown (see Anton), but the real life as it is captured. About pictures from the old days (USSR), some people see the bad things, others the good things in these pictures. However, I see everyday life, the simple things. As for the old Soviet Union, it doesn’t show the graitness or evilness of the USSR, these pictures show what they show, fun, hurt, hapiness, suffering, love and hate, all things we can identify with, each of us in his own world.

If I see a picture of a Soviet soldier in Afghanistan, or, for that matter, a US soldier in Vietnam, or even Nazi propaganda, you can say “oh, they depict an evil empire of war”, or “the imperialistic killers” or “why do they show only negative things?” but you can also look, really look, at the picture, and see in the eyes of that soldier that he just wants to survive and go back to his wife, or the dispair because of the friend that he lost, or even his smiling face after he finally got a decent meal after five days in rain and cold. Feeling we can all identify with, feelings that make these pictures what they are, a moment in time of humans.

Unless they are photoshopped, pictures always tell the truth. Even negative photos or propaganda tell the truth, if only about the reasons why they were made and why these people are on them. There are no good or bad pictures. No matter how and for what reasons it is taken, a photo alsways reveals a story.

Keep on the good job of telling us stories!

How is it possible to say that Moldova is a country were they speak russian language? The official language of this country is Moldavian language, which is a dialect of Romanian language. If you count every country in which somebody is using russian language, than you have to count every country were you find russian people. It is better to put the real facts and not what you would like it to be!!!!!! If you are still dreaming about CCCR, is better to check again the situation…

I love the pictures and if I ever come to Russia I will want to not only visit your modern, cosmopolitan cities but the remote and forgotten places as well. Maybe you can be my tour guide/s. Thank you for sharing this aspect of Russia with me, and don’t worry, I am smart enough and have traveled enough to know that “the map is not the territory”, so to speak – pictures don’t tell the whole story, and those who are worried that visitors to your site will think that Russia is only composed of abandoned buildings are worried about the wrong things.

I see more about America but then again there’s soooo much propaganda directed at America more than everybody so I am quite used to it and do not care…. I have only heard good things about Russia but in many cases, it is propaganda used against various other cultures instead of directing it toward a genuine love Russia. This goes for Brits, French etc who love slandering any country that isn’t their own..lmao Brits are sarcastic and hypocritical which is really just human nature. I honestly am tired of the lies that Russians create about their own culture being perfect but everybody else is bad while Americans are quite honest about their own faults and everybody else who is guilty of this crime.

I love this site. As someone who grew up in West Germany watching all those “scary” Soviet parades on East German TV, I like seeing how things actually were. I now live in Canada and work with cool Ukranians and Russians.

I see a lot of folks posting about the “negativity”; I see some cynical posts but also a lot of things about the good people of Russia and the other republics. To be honest, I have new-found respect for the former Soviet residents partly due to this web site.

Keep up the good work. And for the folks offended by this content, let me tell you if it wasn’t for this site there are a lot of wonderful things I probably never known about: Oil Sands city, the various resorts, the impressive architecture and the tough-as-nails people living in the cold areas.

Would love to see articles about old Soviet shows; we used to get them on the the DDR channels (dubbed in German).

Cheers!

Many have different opinions from each other. Some are nationalists in spite of being refugees from the former Soviet Union. Others despise their former country.

We all laugh together and share jokes about each others’ culture and country.

We all are so thankful that we no longer live in countries that insanely plan to annihilate each other. Let us enjoy that!
