Winter beauty of “Zaklyuchye” estate

“Zaklyuchye” is a very beautiful estate right in-between St. Petersburg and Moscow. It is situated in about 40 km from the highway and the shortest way to get there – from Moscow by a dirt road where not any car can go as the snow on some parts is too high, but the views around are so picturesque that you forget about everything – that is what the real Russian winter must be! Once Upon a Time in Siberia

There are company of Russian photographers that travel around Russia and world taking pictures of everything they see. Recently they decided to split up; one of them went to Africa to make a picture story and the other one went to one of the mining towns in Siberia. Just compare it, +40C (+95F) in Africa and -40C (-40F) in Siberia.
St. Petersburg governor shoveling snow

A funny picture could be recently seen in the streets of St. Petersburg. Some guys put on masks of the city governor Matviyenko and came out to shovel snow. At least the action amused the city citizens.
Winter Affairs

As it always happens, winter comes suddenly. Recently there was a post about how it is grand in Belarus, that all the streets are so tidy and all people are so civilized. But everything is not so smooth as it can seem. Some week ago several photos of Minsk, Belarus capital, winter preparations leaked in the WWW. Usually, when winter in Russia and other CIS countries comes about there are lots of special cars in the streets which spray special mixture of sand and salt to get rid of slippery ground on the pavements and roads of a city. And one of such cars literally shot dead 24 cars in the streets of Minsk.
Russian Antarctic Station

Anton Chekalin has visited Russian Antarctic station and has shot there some interesting places.
For example, what you see on the photo above is the Russian water well. The have made a 16 feet (5 meters) deep hole in the ice and there they can get fresh water from somewhere, so when person gets in there he can see sun trying to penetrate through this many feet thick ice.
Winter in Museum

In winter museums work too…
The Korean Boeing

Korean Boeing was shot down in Karelia, Russia in 1978, with a lot of civil passengers on-board. The pilots of the plane had mysteriously altered the route so that came deep inside Russian territory. Two and a half hours they were escorted by Russian jet fighters not responding to any radio contact or visual contact attempts. At last the Soviet military commanders ordered to shoot the plane down with as much accuracy as they could do. The jet plane of Russian army hit the Boeing with a missile cutting off the piece of its wing, so the Korean plane had to land after this. Two passengers were killed others got wounds as a result of an extremely fast landing to the frozen Russian lake in Karelia, Russia near Kem’ town. The first Russian military police group arrived in two hours to the landing site. They tell that when they entered the plane the strong smell of “blood, alcohol and human fecal masses” hit into their noses. Afterwards the passengers spent three days in the Kem’ town, Karelia, Russia and were send to Helsinki, Finland on the plane on the fourth day. The crew was taken to Moscow and was questioned there, but later they returned to Korea. The plane itself was disassembled to smallest parts and sent to Russian airplane producing factories and research centers, meanwhile the soldiers guarding the site had the first chance in their life to taste Coca-Cola or canned beer and even to read some Playboy. It was something they never met before in the country beneath the iron curtain.
Russian North Truckers

I’ve heard that tomorrow in some parts of Russia temperature would go below -67 F (-55 C), so those would be even more freezing times than usually in this time of the year. But people in Northern parts of Russia need food and other things for comfort living, so shippers should get this to them everyday no matter what’s going on with the weather.
How do Russian truckers cope with this? You can see some moments of their winter life from this photoset submitted by Volgovod via English Russia forum.
Artificial Skiing in Moscow

No, they don’t have enough snow in Russia, they now make an artificial skiing resorts like this one in Moscow. This is gonna be the largest in Europe artificial skiing resort with a dome and artificial ice and snow. The length of the domed route is more than 400 meters (1200 ft) and is 60 m (180 ft) wide. More than 800 people can ski or snowboard at the same time. OK, this has a sense somewhere in Saudi Arabia, where there is no snow at all and they are dreaming of a bit of freezing wind even at winter and there is a plain desert with no hills, but what the reason for it in Moscow, where there is a snow during 7 month a year, where there is a lot of natural hills around? Who can tell the reason for this?
