Building A Metro

Build metro 1

In St. Petersburg they have almost the deepest subway in the world, according to wikipedia: “The deepest metro system in the world was built in St. Petersburg, Russia. In this city, built in the marshland, stable soil starts more than 50 metres (160 ft) deep. Above that level the soil mostly consists of water-bearing finely dispersed sand. Because of this, only three stations out of nearly 60 are built near the ground level and three more above the ground. Some stations and tunnels lie as deep as 100–120 metres (330–390 ft) below the surface. However, the location of the world’s deepest station is not as clear”, however one of the St. Petersburgs stations is the world’s deepest one.

What a cool machinery they use when make dig for new stations:

Buddy on Rails

Russian guy on rails at metro

Going to the subway last tuesday was problematic in St. Petersburg because trains got stuck at one station without any chance coming to others in time. The young buddy sitting on the rails was the cause. As officially declared this was thought to be a suicide attempt but rational thinkers from the platform started giving him advices that it’s more effective for him would be to grab the rails with his both hands, then he would easily be approached to his target with the means of high voltage shock causing his suffering heart to go out of scale.

Anyways he caused the subway schedule to be broken bad time so the police emerged and took him away.

April Lenin Prank

April day Lenin blown up prank

Today is April the First, the April’s Fool day, many people are busy doing jokes and pranks on their coleagues and friends.

In Russia this tradition is also recognized and many do funny and sometimes not-so-funny stuff.

Probably, the most loud prank that hit today’s Russia was a prank made by the group of youngsters of St.Petersburg.

They have found somewhere explosives, equaled to 300g TNT, and put it inside the iron steel Lenin monument standing on the city square across the railway station. Then at four o’clock in the morning they blew up the explosives so starting early morning of April, 1st 2009 all coming to St.Petersburg railway station or leaving thru it have seen a new look of Lenin monument, with a hole “in the back” as it was called by Russian media, but if to be honest that’s not back, but some body part that is lower than the back.

Leningrad Siege: Now and Then

Siege of Leningrad, Russia 1

“The Siege of Leningrad, also known as The Leningrad Blockade was an unsuccessful military operation by the Axis (Nazi) powers to capture Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) during World War II. The siege lasted from September 9, 1941, to January 27, 1944, when a narrow land corridor to the city was established by the Soviets. The total lifting of the siege occurred on January 27, 1944. The Siege of Leningrad was one of the longest and most destructive sieges of major cities in modern history and it was the second most costly.” - from Wikipedia.

During nine hundred (!) days a few million people city of Leningrad suffered from cold and hunger, being deprived of almost all supplies of food and fuel. Many thousands died, those who survived remember this not very willingly. The situation with food was so heavy, no food was sold/distributed among people except a few grams (not even tens or hundred grams) of bread, and not each day, that people had to eat stuff that they would never eat in normal life, like making soups of leather boots (because leather is of animal origin) or boiling the wallpaper because the glue with which they were attached to walls contained a bit of organic stuff. Of course many occasions of cannibalism occurred.

On those photos you can see some pieces of those old photos made during those black days overlaid to the modern city views, respecting the place and angle of view.

No Gifts to Fans

Russian soccer 1

It’s usually the soccer fans who cause main problems during the game - running occasionally on the field adding the job to the security.
This time it got inverted - one of the players decided to throw his t-shirt to the fans as a gift - but then was roughly stopped by policemen guarding the stadium.
Fans got crazy after that and started throwing the plastic seats on the field.
They say that happened because this team was guest playing and won, but policemen were locals and have got behind their team so decided to revenge to the guests and push them hardly. So even people on duty can get involved into the sport battles.
