Such photos always fascinate me. I mean the color photos from the past, the older the better. These ones is no exception. We got used to see only black and white photos from the World War 2 - the color photography was very expensive at that times and actually was not widely implemented, and especially usually nobody took the expensive equipment to the battlefront. Still there are some color photos from the times where our grandfathers were young, like 70 years ago.

Soviet War Games

War games were quite usual and sometimes even obligatory thing in Soviet Union both for children (pioneers) and for adults. “Zarnitsa” (sheet lightning) was the most widespread and famous one, when a big group of people was divided into two confronting teams. The aim was to capture a flag, “secret” documents or army headquarters. Here are some historical photos. It looks like a real war.

Soviet Uniform Caps Collection

As we’ve already told, the USSR was a military state. So not even militants, but workers of the various civil departments, like taxi drivers or wood cutters, should wear military alike uniform in a case of sudden war with the enemies of socialism. Even workers of sobering-up stations (special places where drunk people of Russia picked up from the streets were delivered for compulsory medical treatment) had their own uniform.

World War 2 Photos by Dmitri Baltermants 1

Dmitri Nickolaevich Bal’termants was born in 1912, in Warsaw, Poland (the part of the Russian Empire at that time). In 1915, at the beginning of the revolution, his family moved in Moscow, where he have been living for the most part of his life.

During the World War 2 he made his shots through all over the front in such places as Moscow, Stalingrad (Volgograd nowadays) or Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

Now the pictures of Bal’termants have become the world famous symbols of the War.

Battle in Volkhovsky Forest (World War II) 1

In winter of 1942 Russian 2-nd striking army of Volkhovsky front had tried to break the blockade of Leningrad (St. Petersburg), but it got into the strong German encirclement near the settlement called Myasnoy Bor (Pine Forest “Meaty”) located in Novgorod region. Over a half of the year Russian soldiers, without any ammunition, medical or food supplies, had been trying to break through the ring. The commander of the army general Vlasov had give up. This battle carried away more than tens of thousands of lives. Later people called this place “the Valley of Death”.

Below one can find the historical photos, made by German photographers. The part of them are propagandistic.
