Russian at Northern Pole, 1950s-1960s
Russian people have tens of years of Polar explorations history. Something like fifty-sixty years ago they didn’t have the machines and planes like now but still some spent all year round on the Northern pole on the drifting ice platforms, because at the Northern Pole there is no land surface to build a stationary places like they do at Southern.
Many of those people already passed away. None of such situations are possible now - with lack of electricity, power supplies etc to stay at the Northernmost point of the Earth for 300+ days and don’t loose spirit.

In Russia lately the urge for social networking is hitting all the records. Two major competing social networks take away hours of time of young and not so young Russian people.
As different polls and studies revealed there is one thing that is most important for people while their are going virtually social. If you didn’t guess already what’s that addiction then I’ll give you a clue - it’s a mere appeal of people to show off. Not just to reveal themselves from their best sides but also they are all thirsty for being reviewed and get a “grade” - virtual estimate according to five-ball Russian system that comes from schools. So if you are cool enough you get “5″, a Russian analogue for “A” grade, so to say.
In this all-thriving race for the “fives” they post more and more photos that sometimes balance on the thin ice of good and evil. You can see here just a few from one of the most popular Russian networks.
Kids and Cigs
There was a story some time ago about people in UK or somewhere like that put the photos of their kid with a cigarette - just for fun and then were accused by social workers and police came to them etc.
Well, even a fast look across some popular Russian social networks revealed that this is not a problem for people there. “Kid? A Cigarette? Not a big business, really!”, people say. And some of the cigarettes are even lit.
Victims of the Happy Farmer
In Facebook they have “Farm Town” game. If you don’t know it’s something about comics farming, growing food, plowing fields earning XP and some coins. Those who play say it’s super addictive so if you didn’t tried playing before better don’t.
In Russian social networks they have some kind of a clone for this, called “Happy Farmer”. Many young and not so young girls and boys fell victims of this addiction and… Well here are some of the Russian fans of happy farmer stuff.

No more loud music. Actors are hidden behind the curtain. A tent circus is empty. But it only seems to be – life never quiets down here.
Arena is the first thing seen by a circus child. They fall in love, fight and even pay their last tribute to the dead here. The author of these pics was lucky to come and see a real and unique circus wedding. And of course it was celebrated at the arena. It differed from a regular wedding only in one thing – its modesty due to plain conditions of a mobile circus. The first impression is that these circus people are similar to the others. They indeed are, but barring one feature – their devotion to their occupation.

For several years Russia, as well as other former soviet republics, together with the rest of the Internet world suffers from expansion of the social network services. For the moment the most popular of them here is Vkontakte (“in contact”). It is often considered (without any official confirmation) that its design, style and architecture were “stolen” from Facebook.
