There is a book, called “Medicine and Imperial Power in Russia”, which shows Russian history from the medical point of view. Some subjects are deserved to be real discoveries…
It considered that:
1. Emperor Nikolas I ended up by committing a suicide. In fact he had a bacterial pneumonia, which was worsened by depression because of Russian loss in Crimean War.

Pre-communist Russia

Many people wonder, how did Russia look like before the Communists takeover in 1917.
It’s not well known that in that times Russia was a normal capitalistic state and stayed in good relations with other Western states.
Here is a big hundred photo set of Russia at that times, in color. It seems it was a pretty nice place to live.
Russian Empire in the XIX Century

Maksim Dmitriev was born in 1858 in Tambov province. At the age of 15 he became an apprentice of the famous photographer of that time - M.P. Nastiukov, where he obtained basic knowledge about the art of photography. He became famous at the beginning of the 90-s of the XIX century after representation of the exposition called “Bad harvest in Nizhny Novgorod region”, where he showed ruined villages and sick and starving peasants. With this exposition he became the founder of the photo report genre in Russia.

In our recent publications we told about the amazing Russian photographer Prokudin-Gorsky (the official photographer of Russian empire) who had a special technology of making three different shots and then combining them into one colour image.
So at that time that was the first coloured photo art about Russia. But not the only one.
At the beginning of the XX century another Russian photographer, Sergey Ivanovich Borisov, during his expedition across mountain areas of Altai (1907-1914) made more than 1000 photos later on used as material for coloured post cards of various European publishing offices.
Here is the part of them.

Russian People 100 Years Ago in Color

He travelled to all the distant parts of Russian Empire. This is for example a dweller of Turkmenia, now Turkmenistan. Camels were the common way of transportation for cargo even when trains were introduced to locals by Russian government.
We had already before some photos of this photographer, who managed to make color photos of Russia 100 years ago in 1900-1910. It’s amazing to see the life back there in full color. He had a special task to travel across all the Russian Empire (that’s how Russia was called that times before Communism) and make thousands of such photos for a Royal Depositary. So he made literary thousands of color photos of Russia 100 years ago. (more…)
