Unusual Transport On Moscow Streets

Today’s picture selection is devoted to unusual transport on the streets of Moscow. Here you will find two-storied trolleybuses, steamships on the Moscow River and even an elephant. In the first pic you see construction equipment on Arbat Square during building of the Kalinin Prospect.
Old Russian Traditions as the English Saw It

Samuel Collins, an Englishman, who was a doctor of tsar Alexis of Russia (the 17th century) and spent nine years at his court, wrote a letter to his friend, describing in what environment he lived and what weird traditions Russians had back then.
Neither men, nor women dare forget to wear a belt under pains and penalties of heaven.

They do not whistle using their lips (it’s considered to be inappropriate), but do this with their teeth, and that is very strange.

Old Russian Luxury Houses

If nowadays rich Russians prefer red-brick houses of strange design, many years ago some other fashion was ruling the minds of Russian high society. It was a unique to Russia style of building large wooden houses of genuine Russian design. They had an ability to build houses from stone, like in Europe, but preferred wood on purpose, they liked wood, the feeling of the wooden house.
First Russian Mall

This is a photo series of a first Russian mall in Moscow. It’s more than 120 years old and these photos are not newer.
There are three stages one can see on the photos. At first the old mall buildings were renovated and new stores were built, then a few photos of a crowd having good time on the party dedicated to the grand opening and then go photos of the new mall opened to public.
This was long before the communist took power in Russia, it was a capitalistic, Tsar ruled old Russia..

These photos were made more than about one century ago. It’s amazing that they have preserved till the our time. Did those people know, that we would look at them via the Internet after 100 years?
Russian Empire in the XIX Century

Maksim Dmitriev was born in 1858 in Tambov province. At the age of 15 he became an apprentice of the famous photographer of that time - M.P. Nastiukov, where he obtained basic knowledge about the art of photography. He became famous at the beginning of the 90-s of the XIX century after representation of the exposition called “Bad harvest in Nizhny Novgorod region”, where he showed ruined villages and sick and starving peasants. With this exposition he became the founder of the photo report genre in Russia.
