Russian Orthodox Christian Priests

Russian Orthodox Church Priest

Russians have mixed feelings about the priests of Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Some consider them to be almost holly (well, really maybe just some), others are not glad with some money schemes the ROC was involved in during last years.

To comment a little, during 1990s the state couldn’t support church with any money but they wanted to (maybe they believed it would help them somehow, or their sins would be pardoned someway) so they passed to church some very honey business opportunities like importing cigarettes and tobaco products to Russia without any taxes, so in just months Russian Orthodox Church has become the main dealer of cigarettes in Russia pushing out from the market any other competitors who had to pay taxes and this lasted for years.

Other people say that they can’t trust modern day priests because during that same time - after the Soviet Union collapse - some people went to study for priests just with the thoughts that they would always have plenty of food and place to live if they join the church.

Well, nevertheless, for sure there should be some real believers and followers of Christ’s path, who are ready to fast for 40 days and then give out the last dime to the asking soul. Please submit some photos of such if you met one, I believe there should be!

Russian Scary Books for Naughty Kids

russian book for misbehaving 1

In early 90s you could buy special children books for misbehaving kids in Russia.

This is an example of such a book. Kid, who is reading this book, is being promised many scary things to encounter if he doesn’t obey to mother or father. Here are some translations:

“You’ll fall deep inside a hole
if you don’t obey to your mom”

“If you plan not to listen to father
wild black cats would scratch your brother”

First Russian Laptop

first russian laptop elektronika

This is first Russian laptop, made under the brand “Elektronika”. The production started in 1991 and lasted not very long due to the high price of the device - none of the common people could afford themselves such devices. The price for the computer was around $6000, that equals 25,000 roubles according to that time’s exchange rate, when the average salary across the country was 500 roubles (50 times less!). (more…)

How did the Richest Russians become Rich

Here I am going to tell you a story of one country. I guess you’ve heard some facts on its past but I am practically sure you don’t know some exact details. So the country in question is USSR, the country which doesn’t exist now, since 1991.

The topic of the article is connected with richness, but it’s impossible to understand the roots of the problem if not to make a little digression and to learn some facts about USSR. The main thing I want to point your attention at was a fact that in USSR there was no right for private property for individuals. This might seem unbelievable but it’s true. Nobody was allowed to own things greater than his toothbrush or tv-set. Just stop for a second and try to imagine if all the things that you are got used to would become impossible for you to own. You can’t own your house or apartment (apartments in USSR were just registered for a person’s name but belonged to the state). You don’t own your property so you can’t sell it and buy new, you can’t just sell it and get money for it! In USSR nobody could buy a property for himself, property was assigned to a person or to a family by a decision of a local branch of Communist party. And more than that you are not allowed to start a business and to own the things connected with business – you can’t have a shop, a warehouse, a service company, actually only state could own any companies. Tell me, but please honestly, can you imagine yourself living in such a place? (more…)
