In Russia still exist such things as dog fights.
They are being held not officially by groups of amateurs.

based on the comments of the lady you posted the pictures (the source) everything is done for the doggie fun… meaning that the dog that barks or the one that is on the ground looses the deal. apparently dogs love this kind of fun and do it only in the ring and whenever opponent is present.

those are some nice looking dogs– what breeds are they? Some look mixed, but still good strong looking dogs.
They are (for the most part) Caucasian and Central Asian shepherd dogs, in Russian - Ovcharkas. Very nice dogs.
These dogs have had their ears, and often tails, cut. Shepherd dogs in the wild countryside usually also get their ears cut, because they are expected to fight wolves. The ears are a very vulnerable part - they can easily be bitten to shreds, and torn ears bleed a lot.

REAL dog lovers protect their dogs from injury, not deliberately subject them to it. At least it appears that there they do not fight their dogs to the death, only to whatever they considere a “Win.” It seems there is more blood shed in the human boxing rings of the world. It’s perfectly natural for all male dogs, with either two or four feet, to fight for no justifiable reason.

Many people from Western world and Europe, above all, always speak of sadism but these dogs were used for fighting with wild animals, for protection work and for fight with other dogs too. If volkodavs will not fight at all, their original fighting abilites will decrease. And one of the ways to keep them are dog fighting tournaments or its softer form practiced with young dogs which is called “тестовые испытания волкодавов” aka temperament test in Middle Asian Ovtcharka (also in Caucasian Ovtcharka).
Wolfdogs are not companion breeds of dog and they need - now and then - a little bit of fighting. I agree with it because dog fighting is irreplaceable way to preserve the original nature of these dogs. And I strongly hope that Russian people will be reasonable enough to continue with this best way of dog training and will not let your Western culture and laws interfere into their actions lol.
I am against long fights where dogs severely injure each other, but when less dangerous and shorter fights especially with young dogs, I find it more useful than harmful. And one more thing: when winners of dog fighting tournaments will give birth to puppies, its almost like a natural selection, because the puppies will take after the strongest fighters and will be very strong as well. Please understand it.
i can understand what you are saying, the problem is that the animal does to choose to fight. but is brought up and taught to fight. i know in the wild dogs fight, but they dont really go out of there way, the howl, mark terriory, etc so then other dogs dont come near and then there are no fights (bit hypothetical here).

I think the westerners need to harden up… There is dog fighting and then there is dog fighting. This fighting seems to actually serve a purpose, and is controlled before either of the dogs is seriously injured.
It is required to keep the natural fighting skills in the dog, which is required in the job that they do.

Okay, firstly, that last picture with the guy looking so proud make me puke up in my mouth a little.
I read all the bullshit comments about “preserving a dogs nature” and I want to make it very clear that dogs don’t fight for the fun of it. They don’t need to fight at all, play fighting is enough- they “pratise” and then they know what to do if the time comes for them to fight something. Breeding dogs and teaching them to fight just cause agression and often makes the dog “depressed”. If you haven’t noticed, dogs like to be loved and cared for, they like the company of other dogs. In the wild dogfights rarely occur- so why should they occur because some narrowminded people decide so? I’m all against this. I have my own dog, a bit like the one in the picture, just all black. If i see so much as a scratch on him I feel sad- so i can’t even imagine this… That some people have said “just short dog fights”, as though it makes them any better, a bite is still a bite, they still feel pain. I’m too upset and tired to make sense, i hope you get the point. anyone who does this should drown themselves
