Orange Snow in Omsk, Russia
Yesterday a strange phenomena happened in Omsk region Russia.
Pretty vast territory of Omsk region was covered with a snow that had an unusual color. It was orange.
Now we have a few photos, mainly screenshots from Russian TV channels.
There is still no one exact explanation about the origin of orange color of this snow.
More high quality photos of the Martian like snowy terrain would follow shortly.
According to Russian officials the orange snow doesn’t contain any chemical byproducts or any other elements dangerous to human.

Very interesting… I’ve never seen anything like this before.
I reckon what might of happened is there might have been a sand storm in the Gobi or even Sahara desert, the storm carried the sand well into the atmosphere and when it got to central Russia, it began to fall with the snow, and hence it could be sand mixed into the snow.
I could be completely wrong, but it’s worth a guess.

Then how is it that many cars over in the States seem to have 3+ litre V6 and V8 engines?
Take for example the Ford Econoline van, it can have the Triton V10 petrol engine in it (which would probably return about 15-20 mpg). Now over here in Europe, we have the Ford Transit, with at maximum a 2.5 litre turbo diesel engine. Far more economical, granted it may pull a less load, but still, there is no need for a V10 engine in a van at all.
Another thing, what is it with you Yanks no liking diesel cars? They are far better than hybrids IMO (better mpg’s, more reliable, easier to service, etc). Sure they may have alot of black soot from the exhaust pipe, but with particle filters becoming compulsory in the EU, this will remove alot of the soot from diesel engines, making them just as ‘enviromentally friendly’, if not more, than a hybrid.

Kyoto Protocol? Have you read it? Its just another way for the UN to get money from advanced countries. If you actually read it you will see there is no call for the biggest polluters (china, many middle eastern countries, etc.) to do anything to improve or any consiquences for them if they dont. As for the auto emissions. Why do you think there are very few diesel cars here and no 2 cycle cars at all. They wont pass the emissions standards. But they are all over the EU, so who’s standards are tougher?

diesel cars do not necessarily pollute more than petrol vehicles. in fact, the worlds most efficient combustion engine is a diesel made by volkswagen. also, please note:

in regards to soviet countries, you are correct in that former soviet countries are probably the most polluted - however, check your facts on pollution gross output and per capita:
the USA ouputs 5,762,050 units of CO2, with China outputting 3,473,600 and Russia 1,540,360 units per annum.
the USA per capita polluted 20 units of CO2, with Luxembourg and Australia at 17 units. Russia were not even in the top 28 per capita.
the USA also creates the most nuclear waste, at 2,100 gross units per annum, with Canada second at 1,340 units. Russia is not within the top 16 countries. Suprisingly within the nuclear energy field, Canada leads in per capita waste generation, with the USA at number 8 on the list. again, Russia is not within the top 16.

Too bad diesel leaves particulate matter which can clog up your lungs. Gasoline engines produce almost zero particulate matter. Breathing diesel exhaust is like smoking a cigarette-it actually clogs up your bronchi in the lungs.
Thats why the west is ramping up it’s standards against diesel-soon they will all need a filter inside the exhaust system or they won’t be allowed to sell them.

Both werner and gizmo are ignorant. They’re confusing the means of combusting a fuel with the fuel itself. Please learn about low-sulphur diesel fuel, biodiesel, and other various diesel fuels. The entire reason European diesel engines don’t pass emissions has nothing to do with what either stated. The diesel sold in the US is notoriously dirty - and that is the entire reason why. Get your facts straight before pulling bullshit out of your ass.

There are a few things I would like to clarify with all of you on the people and government of the United States.
1. The people of the United States are not evil. The government is. We oppose the war in Iraq and have almost no support for our President any longer. Of course, we do hold some of the blame for voting him in again, but that is besides the point.
2. Not all of us in the US drive large vehicles such as, and not limited to: Hummers, Cadillac Escalades, Lincon Navigators, etc… I drive my father’s Subaru Outback that gets rather good gas mileage. Although, I do not deny that many US citizens, do, in fact, drive these monstrosities, a lot of us try to conserve as many natural resources as possible.
3. Most people in the US, would like more research to be done to create new technologies for power, and fuel for aircraft, cars, trucks and others. I do not deny that a lot of the world’s resources are used every day by the people of the US. You cannot put the blame on all of us.
4. The big industries and government officials keep this research from happening because they know there is a demand and money can be made from it. A lot of money for that matter, even though many US citizens, including myself, are pushing for new, cleaner, fuels to be made such as, for example, Hydrogen Fuel Cells.
6. Another thing. It is a common misconception by saying the whole of the US is fat lazy, aggressive “cowboys” if you will. I for one am not, being a skinny 16 year-old.
7. One last thing. I am a proud citizen of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. There is a big difference between “America” and the “United States of America”. All in all, America is made up of two continents, and one sub-continent. These include: North America, South America, and Central America. The United States, is a country, like Canada and Mexico. Not a collection of Continents. Try looking at a map if you want to prove me wrong.
In conclusion, all you people who try and say all citizens of the United States are evil, corrupt, fat, and lazy are all being ignorant of the actual state of my great nation. I am not trying to start a fight by listing these things, but only only trying to make a point. You can’t blame all of the people in the US.

Again, Canada had more “success” at Juno on D-day because it fell more easily (note I didn’t say “easily,” I said “more easily” - in comparison to Utah and Omaha) due to a successful overnight bombing campaign. 50% casualties in the first hour sounds about right, although I don’t have my WWII books with me. Omaha and Utah were the hardest-defended, hardest-fought beaches. I do appreciate the success of the Canadian military in that campaign, however, no disrespect intended there.

If sulfer was the cause for the strange color, than it would indeed be considered dangerous. Yes, pollution could be a factor as well. Think about it. Has anyone seen the L.A. skyline? Smog. If it snowed in L.A. (which I would take as a sign of the end of the world, probably), than the snow would most certainly NOT be white. In fact, the only place you can find truly white snow is where there is no pollution in the immediate area. (thinking Antarctica and the Arctic Circle) It’s simple high school Earth Science. Depending on how much pollutants are in the air, the snow could be white, gray, or even yellow or orange; it would take on the color of the element with the highest percentage. Again, back to sulfer, which would give a yellowish-orange tinge.
I’m not pointing fingers on who caused it, merely trying to hypothesize as to how. Yes, I agree that the WHOLE WORLD needs to look in the mirror about polluting the earth. Some would argue the fact that volcanos are causing more pollution than we ever could. Yes, that’s fine and dandy. But we as a whole are contributing to it, and it needs to stop. Think about what type of planet you are leaving your children, whether you have any yet or not.

Calculating on per-dollar GDP basis, it is right around the global average: not stellar, but still pretty damn good, considering low population desnsities and need for personal transportation and reliance on outdated technology thanks to gov’t stupidity and greenie (watermelon, actually: green on the outside, red on the inside) NIMBYism and BANANAism (coal-fired plants, regrettable lack of development in nuclear power, gov’t ban on reprocessing of reactor fuel). So you can shut up right about now.

America is huge. And not DENSELY populated…try driving across it sometime and you spend most of your time on the plains or in the desert with no homes around.
Less population density = more expensive public transportation (as more roads and miles need to be covered, paid for by fewer people) = more driving.
People in dense or small countries are able to survive without a car. Unless you live in a big city (that isn’t Los Angeles) in America, you NEED a car. It’s sad but true.
I live in LA, and there is alot of pollution. You can see it in the sky. But guess what, I’ve never seen it get on a plane and leave to go to Russia. Maybe instead of pointing fingers at the USA which is not exactly close to this orange snow, we should look for a more local pollution source.

I have to comment about the LA skyline. I was watching the Rose Bowl on TV and they panned to Los Angeles to the south. The commentators were just silent. “There’s Los Angeles, how, umm,.. uh.. beautiful.” It was covered in smog! You couldn’t even see the buildings! I was laughing my butt off. Interestingly, the cameras didn’t take a look at LA again. Guess they learned their lesson. We do have a pollution problem, but no one will do anything about it.
The sad thing is that all of us on this board are more alike than we are different. We don’t have to stoop to “My daddy can beat up your daddy” crap like children. The power lies in us all collectively getting together and then the governments will follow suit. Keep in mind that around 2% or so of air pollution in the state of Maryland in USA comes from “cars.” Much larger amounts, around 40% come from trucks and busses and other vehicles using leaded fuel. Larger amounts come from industry.
The government of MD demands that car owners get their cars inspected for pollution for $12 each. Why? Not for the environment. There are millions of cars in one state alone and the government makes good money from ordering inspections. We have the technology to convert trucks and other vehicles to use unleaded fuel and drastically reduce pollution, and the technology to fix the factories, but there isn’t any profit from it. The situation is just like that in all the other states.
In effect, the USA pollutes abominably not because they are evil, but because they are run by capitalist pricks who stay in power only because of all the money they get from their industrialist friends and don’t care about the environment. It’s a sad situation really.

Hesre is a free assist: It is now 2007, you are not posting in the 1970’s. The trucks run on Diesel and not gasoline. Leaded Gasoline is not used anymore and has not commercialy available since 1982.
What you posted is complete and total nonsense. It is, quite simply, in no way true. No ‘leaded’ fuel is used by the transportation and trucking industry in the US.

Every single one of you worried about this pollution problem and who’s fault it is are incredibly insane. I’d like to say irrational but some of you prove very good points that cannot be contradicted. Firstly, you’ve all forgotten that each and every one of you have access to a computer, whether it’s top of the line or a piece of shit. You all have enough money for this luxury. There are millions of intelligent people out there that cannot give an opinion because they cannot afford this luxury. Everybody contributes some type of pollution to this world, but this is at the cost to technological advancement. Human beings love to gamble. For example, McDonalds, PepsiCo., GM, IBM, Microsoft, and every single sport worth playing provide a job for millions of people that don’t even live in the US. Hey folks, I’ve travelled to the EU many times for work and vacations. Very often during introductions if my Canadian nationality comes up I get a “glad you’re not american” comment or something along those lines which makes me feel the same akward I feel when someone drops a racial bomb. Need I remind you that along with the garbage, junk, and trash that us Americans supposedly make, we also created the internet? We also invented A LOT of the nice technologies that you enjoy, including things like digital cameras (NASA), the telephone (Alexander Graham Bell), CPU chips (Intel), the picture tube (RCA), iPods (Apple), home computers (various mostly American companies), etc. In fact, we would not be having this friendly conversation if it were not for the ingenuity of us stupid, lazy Americans. For those who don’t believe this, REASEARCH and you will find out that the Internet started out as ARPANET, which was a research network that started between a couple of AMERICAN colleges and military sites. The Internet that we enjoy today only happened when the American government decided to allow commercial use of the network, rather than just restricting it to research and educational purposes. (I helped impliment some of the original networks that became the Internet during the time when this decision was made)
I happen to have a Russian wife (NOT a mail-order bride). She came to America FOR A BETTER LIFE and MORE OPPORTUNITIES. And, since she’s been here, she’s learned to RESPECT America, rather than bash it. It is very easy to bash that which you don’t understand. And, my wife has also been learning that what she grew up being taught as fact in Russia, was largely fiction created by her government to make them seem superior. Once the blinders were taken off, she became enlightened that Russia is NOT the center of the Universe like she was taught. And, from what she’s taught me about the REAL Russia, (from a REAL Russian) it is NOT on my list of potential vacation spots.
I highly suggest that the ignorant foreigners on this thread RESEARCH before they decide to put down and hate something that they do not understand, or worse, only understand from the view of their insecure governments, who want their people to hate America only to prevent their entire population from trying to defect here. I, along with many Americans, are not brainwashed to believe whatever my government tells me–I am capable of using tools, such as this wonderful Internet to judge the REAL truth, which is often not what it appears to be.

USA forces had suffered major losses but it was just a tiny percentage compared to the losses of Soviet Union. Still, these few hundred of thousands is a frigging lot in any sense and a big thanks goes to them and other allies who together made it possible for victory to happen!
