Donetsk Underground
This is how underground (subway) is being built in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Donetsk and the surrounding territories are heavily urbanized and agglomerated into conurbation. The workforce is heavily involved with heavy industry, especially coal mining. The city is an important center of heavy industry and coal mines in the Donets Basin (Donbas) and the Ukraine. Directly under the city lie the coal mines.
So they hired coal miners to dig the tunnels for the future underground. So now they get coal and meanwhile the subway is being built. Smart isn’t it.

Doesn’t appear as if there’s much concern about worker’s comp. or lawsuits stemming from injury. It doesn’t look like as many safety procedures as in the USA are observed.
Not smart. Stupid. Underground rail is extremely expensive to build and maintain, difficult to develop or upgrade, very dangerous when crashes or fires occur. If your city wants an internal rail system, you want MONORAIL! Overground, very cheap to build, maintain, and to deconstruct and reconstruct elsewhere. It only requires standing posts along the middle of existing highways, or it can use new ground and have grassland underneath. Extremely safe to operate and rescue people in peril. Underground stupid, monorail smart.
…but then you would not get the coal, would you?
To eye:
Are you working for a company that builds monorails?
…and there are always some ’smart’ people how knows better than those on-the-spot.
To eye. Your comment reminds me of the Simpsons episode when they build a monorail in Springfield…monoraiiiiil, monoraiiiiil, monoraiiiiil.
Stupid Ukrainians! That subway has been under construction forever. They’ll never finish it. Those pictures looked the same ten years ago, no doubt.
YES tovarischi, the MONORAIL is the way of the future. Why, I’ve sold monorails to Brockway, Ogdenville, North Haverbrook Liski, and Igarka, and by golly it put them on the map!
Eye. Well, the subway system has an additional benefit of being capable of serving as a bomb shelter. Can’t hide under a monorail!
hard job…
So they’re running the tunnels through the coal measures? What happens when they want to actually mine that bit?
Boy those guys work hard.
Salut!
