Kazakhstan at 70s

It has been said on some news sites today that people of the village named Gold located in Romania (which is 2000 away from Kazahstan and in Europe) try to sue “Borat” movie creators in court of New York.

They claim that they were told it’s a just a documentary about poverty in Romania, and were shocked when they found themselves in a comedy movie about… Kazakhstan.

I don’t know how big are their odds to win the case, but here are the photos of Kazakhstan 30 years ago, from Soviet archives at Soviet Museum. Soviet chronicles of course tried to tape mostly the merits leaving behind all the poverty etc. Still Kazakhstan even at that time had industry and was famous for its coal mining and cotton production.

Also I’ve read on different websites that Borat is speaking Hebrew to his fellow villagers in the movie trailer.

    3. Borat rocks. :)

30 years ago, even in Kazakhstan, there was no poverty to capture on photo. There is now.

    4. Yuri says:

30 years ago the was no poverty captured on photo, only unphotographed poverty…

    5. Dorin says:

Hi, the village name is Glod (not Gold) and it means ‘Dirt’ in Romanian.
Otherwise, I agree that the poverty was left unphotographed, as well as crimes against humanity that were not so uncommon those days.

    6. ilyich says:

there were some reports in the local papers here in the US that BORAT (or “BORDT” in the weird Roman-Cyrillic hybrid alphabet they sometimes use) has had the effect of getting some westerners interested in Kazahkstan.

I’m not sure how true that his, but it’s an interesting development.

Kazahks should take advantage of this and try to generate some western tourist income.

    7. yesterday, our premier Nazarbaev visited kings and queens in U.& K. He express very positive toward me. he say he like a interest in Kazakhstan from my movie films fans. chinquee.

    12. someone says:

On last picture it’s a supermarket of toilet paper, a lot to choose from :)

    13. honey says:

In the movie Borat also spoke polish, arabic, some russian as well as hebrew.

    14. renton says:

And the most pissing me of thing is that “kazach” is speaking polish !!!
      jagshemash means “how are you”,
      cheashch means “hi”,
etc. most important polite words and sentences in polish (and only in that language).

So this briliant young guy buid a vision of kazachstan in american and european eyes by mixing romanian village, with polish words ;)

    15. FRESCO says:

In the borat movie dont see this LOL

    16. dRE says:

Borat is a movie for retards.))

    17. Robert says:

Borat is there, and always has been there, not to mock the peoples of Central Asia, but to mock the people that Sascha Baron-Cohen picks on.

Yes, in one of the scenes it’s pretty much agreed that he’s speaking Hebrew, but as said above, most of his key-words are Polish.

The whole idea is to make a character so ridiculously unbelievable that it’s hard to think that anyone could fall for ‘Borat’, and yet, however, they do.

    18. Pashok says:

the slide show is great, ALmaty is my home…..about Borat… it is not about KAzakhstan that much, it is about Americans having absolutely NO clue where the KZ is and what that country all about…their reaction that’s what funny not the gypsies in Romania….

    19. Dee Bee says:

      People, in general, are stupid.

    20. John says:

Now that everyone has become familiar with American Hollywood productions for producing such Shit as Borat and the fact that most of the world hates the American government. Maybe we should have been able to understand the purpose behind Hitler’s regime. Too late now isn’t it!
