Where Is Georgia?

Some time ago there was a political conflict between Russian and the small country on its South called “Georgia”.

Georgia is a part of former Soviet Union, so most of people there speak Russian and a lot of Georgian people live and work in Russia, because average monthly salary in Georgia doesn’t exceed $30 (compared to $400 in Russia). Also there are some Russian army troops in Georgia since Soviet Union times.

So there was a conflict and major American news agencies mentioned this conflict in their news reports. But it seemed so that some people in USA didn’t understand that there is another Georgia and made a big discussion in Yahoo newsgroups. They were really shocked to learn that USA state Georgia is invaded with Russians.

Look this screenshot of Yahoo newsgroups:

where is georgia?

Comments were like this:

“WHY IS THE RUSSIAN ARMY IN ATLANTA?
I WANT ANSWERS DAMMIT!!!”

“RUSSIA OUT OF U.S. NOW !!!!!!!
…GEORGIA NOW…WHO`S NEXT ? FLORIDA ?,…AND THEN WHO ??? THIS MUST STOP !!!!”

“WHY ARE PUTIN’S TROOPS IN ATLANTA?
have not head of this until now - this is outrageous !”

    1. Bert says:

Georgia is actually a very cool little country, I’ve been there. Don’t miss the Stalin Museum in Gori if you have a taste for irony ;-)

Georgia is doing pretty well after the Rose Revolution. The funny thing is that they imported a lot of obsolete Dutch equipment, something to do with Saakashvili being married to a Dutch girl. It always cracked me up to see our old DAF/Den Oudsten buses drive along Rustaveli, with Dutch “achter uitstappen” signs still on them ;-)

Oh, and Georgia is a state in the US too. Who cares.

    2. LEVON says:

Yeah, Dumm Americans never know that there is anything else in the world exept US, Mexico And Iraq. I still remember how americans were reacting when I was telling them That taht armenia is a bit souther than georgia.

      • Patrick says:

I can’t believe someone would say something so rude….. something so broad… you must be a child… hopefully with age will come wisdom…

Americans do not have anymore control over their government as the russian people do over theirs…

you are such a child…. when people like you grow up the world will be a much better place..

    3. конюхъ says:

“Georgia is doing pretty well after the Rose Revolution”

Who said that? BBC? lol :)

    4. Bert says:

They sorted out police corruption, did something against the carjackings and organized crime, and set off on a pro-western course. It’s not the gangster state it used to be, they’re rebuilding quite a lot with US/UN/EU money. The Georgians I met were quite hip and cosmopolitan. I was surprised actually after coming by bus from Eastern Turkey.

    5. Robert says:

Please tell me these were piss-takes.

      Pleeeeeeeease!

    6. Marius says:

      Lol )) Stupid Americans ))

    7. Zael says:

Robert, it’s not really that suprising. This is Internet, and minorities (intellectually or otherwise) do have an equal access to it. These particular discussions at Yahoo were probably held by people that are alike to the ones that are discussed here:

    8. Dimon says:

      Doesn’t anyone understand satire? XYI!!

    9. Shane says:

Anyone who thought these comments were serious needs to have their head examined.

    10. Manci says:

Nice, I’m Spanish and we’re used to read about americans who firmly believe our country is somewhere next to Bolivia or Mexico… lol

    11. Gizmo42 says:

Whether its sarcasm or not there are ppl here that are that stupid. You can find some that dont realize that Washington state and Washington D.C. are completely different and on opposite sides of the country.

Luckily not all of us are that stupid though. But its embarassing some times.

    12. pld says:

      “Who said that? BBC? lol”

Well, I personally trust BBC more than any news agency of a country that sanctions assassinations of journalists critical of the government. Sadly, I believe that Anna Politkovskaya won’t remain the last in this grim line.

    13. This is so LAME. I think English Russia might be running out of gas, it’s getting boring. This is a VERY OLD story and the Americans were JOKING. If you read their comments, this is clear.

One Russophile idiot already embarrassed himself by mis-reporting this story LONG ago:

      http://konstantin2005.blogspot.com/2006/10/yahoo-forum.html

It’s very sad that Russians are so eager to think that Americans are idiots. America has ten times more Nobel Prizes for science than Russia, and its economy is also ten times larger. Russians need to wake up from their rabid dreams of hatred and self-delusion and live in the real world.

It really does seem that Russians want to fail.

      • Adrian says:

If USA has more money is because they invade countries & steal their resources!!!

And most of people from US is really stupid, their high school tests are just too easy, most of them just speak 1 language, I SPEAK 4!!!!

They would know to say where Irak is.

And USA is a DICTATORSHIP, only too parties with same economical orientations have ruled in the US history, there are always votes that ‘disappear’ during elections… Think about it.

I am not Russian, I am proud to be a European in DEMOCRATIC European Union

    14. pawel says:

Jesus, people.. Are you that inhumane that you see Americans making jokes (even if they are corny) as a reason for anti-Americanism? And the knob who thinks there is some cause to bash Russians over this article, you can spare everybody that too - you have a quite the fertile imagination.

      Horosho? Spasibo.

    15. Cheshire_d0g says:

“America has ten times more Nobel Prizes for science”
But how many of these prizes were taken by people who where born in USA? Mostly, they are won by immigrants. In significant part, by Russian ones (as well as Israeli, Indian and Chinese).

It’s right that science is best supported in US - that’s why a lot of talented people go there. Who doesn’t like money? But that’s not a good argument for saying that Americans are inherently smart (or did you mean something else?).

    16. Zippy says:

Haha, it’s true, those Americans think that the world ends at their borders. Silly people.

    17. CHESHIRE:

First of all, even if half of US nobel prizes were won by people not born in the USA and we throw those out, it still has five times more than Russia.

Second, if you are so smart and in a position to lecture the US about how non-smart it is, then why don’t you get the data about how many and show it to us? Your silly speculation isn’t very impressive.

Third, I’d say it’s pretty damn impressive if the US creates such an attractive country that all the scientists of the world want to go there. What do you think that is, just luck?

Fourth, the point isn’t whether Americans are so smart, the point is whether Russians are SMARTER, so that they can afford to laugh at American mistakes. The USA is a FAR more impressive, powerful and successful country than Russia, so the idea of Russian laughing at Americans is just plain dumb. It only goes to prove what a really epic failure Russia really is.

    18. Your MA says:

Americans yet again prove how stupid they are.

    19. dRE says:

La Russophobe: Speaking in your words, “why don’t you get the data about how many and show it to us?”
I remember you posted a list of Nobel-prize winners from USA and Russia, show it to us again and let’s see how many people are actually from US and how many are immigrants, and compare that to Russia.

    20. Debora says:

The scientists come to the U.S. because it’s where the MONEY is, and not necessarily because it’s where all the knowledge is.

    21. dRE says:

La Russophobe: Oh yeah, one more thing: “The USA is a FAR more impressive, powerful and successful country than Russia”…

I still wonder, why do you (”succesful-possibly-american-woman”) bother with anti-Russian propaganda in the internet if Russia is SOoooo insignificant?! Why waste your time on such pathetic country, when it’ll die by itself in the next century? Why not wait a little bit, why waste so much energy? And don’t tell me that a person who calls herself “russophobe” and hates Slavs actually cares for poor russian people.

    22. speculator says:

      way to go yankees!

    23. ilyich says:

OK kids– i will admit that there are many American who are stupid when it comes to geography (many can’t even find North America on a map), BUT I think most of those Yahoo newsgroups are just people joking around (”RUSSIA OUT OF US NOW!!!” oh please, he is obviously being silly– if Russian troops were in Atlanta it would be on every front page in the US, whereas now it’s only minor news to Americans, right or wrong.)

    24. otherwood says:

“They sorted out police corruption, did something against the carjackings and organized crime…It’s not the gangster state it used to be, they’re rebuilding quite a lot”

Yes, it’s true, Georgia is one of the fastest growing states in the US thanks to those reforms…

    25. larik says:

Whoever thinks those postings are real, IS a complete moron. You can even tell that those people being silly by the style of their postings.

Anyway, this website has good pictures, but whoever runs this site and posts the commentaries is whether a complete moron or just doing a schtick comedy.

    26. Johnny2Bad says:

” … i will admit that there are many American who are stupid when it comes to geography …” but that doesn’t mean they would confuse Georgia, a nation, with Georgia, a state/province/prefecture inside a nation. Naaaah.

How about confusing North Korea with Australia?

    27. Fronika says:

I heard tell that the Georgians are the best looking race in the world.

    28. Bert says:

While Georgian girls are very very cute, Estonian girls are cuter ;-)

    29. Ginatsvali says:

Georgian girls are beautiful!!! I spent many years there when I was a kid. They do age quicker though.

      • kokhta says:

hehe, i assure you that if you worked and lived like georgian women do, you would age pretty damn quick yourself :) bisides the hard life, often times the reason for this is that georgian girls/women have too much self respect and not enough self love (which can be good or bad) if you know what i mean…

    30. Anton says:

Congrats, English Russia, you have repeated the mistake of every russian news site! If you bothered to go and read the actual posts you would understand that all of those comments were jokes!

So far i’ve been very impressed by the lack of bias on this site, but this is just embarrasing!
(Если кто либо должен понимать когда народ прикалывается, так ето именно русские!)

    31. DRE: Here is the link:

Click through the link on the post for the list of all winners by nation. Count for yourself and report back to us.

    32. ILYICH: Do you think that Russians are better educated in world geography than Americans? If so, do you have any evidence to back up your belief? Do you think Russians receive fair and accurate information about America and its history in their schools?

    33. Andrei says:

Those ignorant amercicans. All they can think about is the U.S.A., and don’t even bother to think about the rest of the world, only if they want to invade a country. Which they do all the time.

      • Spooney says:

Sadly, you stand out as the greatest moron here. With an ounce of reasoning you’d realize that these comments were jokes. Your ignorant and stereotypical comments about the US are also laughable. I’m positive that you actually have no idea about what is taught in the US.

What about Russia, now desperately snatching up as much territory as possible?

    34. Andrei says:

To la russophobe: 1.if you are afraid of russians, get off this site. 2.Why would russia learn about US history. 3. Yes, actually russians are well educated in geography, dumbass.

    35. dRE says:

LR: I counted about 125 for USA (only americans), 110 for UK, 94 for Germany and 25 for USSR (including Belarus and Lithuania).
Point is, this doesn’t prove the smartness of American population. It proves that your government pays more money to scientists, which is good of course. But if we take overall population of Russia and USA, the answer to who’s smarter won’t be so obvious to you.
And I’m pretty sure Russians are more educated than Americans.

      • archi says:

not just russians. any people from any other country are more educated

      • tld says:

        125 for americans? 110 for UK? …
According to Wikipedia there’s around 60 million people in the UK compared to 300 million people in the USA.
With basic math that gives the UK a ratio of 1.83 Nobel Prizes per person while the USA has a ratio of 0.42 Nobel Prizes per person (rounded up).

With that put aside, the Nobel Prize is a completely backarsed prize in the first place due to the structure of the scienfic world. While a brilliant mind is needed to win a Nobel Prize (most of the time…) the very basic ingredient is usually exceptionally good funding.

What should be compared in the idiotic debate of ‘who is stupid and who is not’ are averages of highschool diplomas, number of highschool diplomas, amount of domestic criminals.. etc. compared to population. Silly prizes in science mean nothing.

    36. Sergey says:

Recently, when George W. Bush visited Brasil and Brasilian president showed him Brasilian map. He was very naturally surprised and said something like: “I did not know it is so big..” I don’t think he was joking.

    37. Bagration says:

If any country is compared with USA in Nobel Prizes… it is very easy to imagine the result. Today USA is the most powerful state in the world. USA is far richer than Russia, even during Soviet times.

Russia has not so Nobel Prizes as USA, France neither. Japan is in the same situation. So all the countries but USA, are going to fail.

    38. 14thJuly says:

Russophobe idiots doesn`t know the difference between Georgia in USa and Georgia in the Caucase.

Too bad you didn`t have Stalin for President,

PS: Nobel price award is biaised. Russia have 60% of world Nuke arsenal, while being only 40% of USA population. USA might have better toilet paper and skyscrapers than the rest of the world, but their expensive military tech is beaten by Russian tech dozen of time scheaper.

Worst, even small countries can kicke your arss.

Like North Korea, you can rant about “famines” that could have been avoided if North korea had continued making their nuclear plants in 94~.
They have a hundred nukes, including H bombes, have developped intercontinental missile.
Origine of dozens of nukes is Russia and Ukraina, rest founds origins in clandestin Uranium facilities active since the 1980s.

More determined than WW2 Japanes soldiers. You think i`m kidding, yo just waite!

    39. Art K says:

Yes, Americans are dumber than shit. However, I taught English in Moscow last year, and I am from Washington State (West coast of USA), no matter how many times I tried to explain to people that WA and DC are different, they couldn’t understand. Some thought I could get them help or monetary aid because I “lived in Washington”…

    40. Anna says:

Russia has oil and gas. You should never forget it.

    41. dan says:

If it wasn’t for stupid people, we could not all say that we are so smart! Sure there are some stupid Americans, but from the looks of some of those police pictures we are not alone in this problem! ha ha! Truthfully though, very few Americans know what is going on in the world. In fact many of them can’t name their state capitol. Oh well…. If it wasn’t for stupid people we couldn’t say we were so smart! Thank them!

    42. Anton2 says:

Ok, people, come on…be serious. Let me just point out some quick facts (being that I come from Russia).

      1) The reason the U.S. has more “Nobel Prize” winners is primarily because the U.S. pays the scientists well and it has many smart immigrants who won the prize under an American banner. The reason USSR had very few Nobel Prize awards was because the Nobel Prize committe could not award it to a single person (because of the communist propoganda/ideology the prize would have belonged to all people of the USSR). I can think of 20 scientists right off the top of my head that were chosen for a Nobel Prize but were not awarded it because the USSR government did not allow it.

      2) If you are looking at Russia Vs. U.S.A. in the context of richness and all of those things; U.S.A. is the most powerful country in the world. It can do what-ever it wants. However, Russia has existed for more than a 1000 years. It has history that is so rich with literature and science and military genius that would cast such a huge shadow on American achievements that you would need a high powered light and a microscope to see them. Word of advice, don’t compare Russia in these terms.

      3) As to determining which country is smarter…there is no doubt that the Russian Population is smarter. However, there is also no doubt that America is the most powerful country because it allows creativity and ingenuity in the persons train of thought. In Russia it is different.

You cannot compare Russia and the U.S. They are completely different and on the complete opposite sides of the spectrum. U.S. and Russia have their respective histories. Albeit the U.S.’s history/culture/”richness” is a miniscule dot compared to Russian achievements.

Thank you for your understanding and time

      Sincerely,

      Anton

    43. visbygp says:

Americans are not stupid they just care less about other countries. They are very individualistic people (Hofstede) and Georgians are the best people in the world, who will reach their main purpose really soon.

    44. kokhta says:

i’m sorry to upset you all lol (regarding the argument who is smarter russians or americans, but you both loose when it comes to who is smarter and more talanted people because if you take into consideration population percentage of russians (142,400,000) - americans (301,408,000) and georgians (4,661,473) and count all the famous people (artists, writers, scientists, professors, sportmen, etc etc etc) georgians win over both by a huge margin =D

    45. 2kija says:

well, talking about stupidness of one or another nation is stupid itself :D

And why you demand to know anythong about Georgia (countrey) from americans? they’r not spending all nights thinking about theyr lost positions in caucasus i guess :)

    46. Burnsy says:

I doubt all of those comments were jokes. Actually, in one of the articles in a major American newspaper about Georgia a few months ago, a journalist listed Georgia’s population as 8 mln, when in fact it is something around 4 mln and never approached 8. On the other hand, the population of US state Georgia is just slightly above 8 mln. So if a journalist with all the help of proof-readers and fact-checkers made this mistake and it went into print, then simple folks would not even have a chance to figure this one out.

People are laughing at these comments not because they are true, but because it fits so well with the overall perception of Americans as very ignorant people which comes from listening to your politicians, analysts, and journalists. And the world will laugh at you even though you may not like it and may not think of yourself as ignorant and sometimes may not deserve it. The only way to stop the laughter is for you to stop being ignorant.

By the way, Americans are always ridiculing everybody so why are you suddenly so sensitive when somebody ridicules you? Does it hurt to realize nobody buys into your image of the coolest, smartest, strongest, etc.?

    47. Pavlovna says:

No matter what, neither country can actually be compared to each other, nor to most countries in the world. Both are very large which means more chances for different cultures. USA is full of imigrants who are not educated as well as half the country feels that religion is education and science is wrong. Good education in the states is also really exspensive. The north east and north west tend to even be a whole nother world compared to the south of USA. Russia isnt too different in that sense either. And then comparing ex USSR countries to either is also impossible since a lot of resources to make a country sucessful were cut off when they got their independence. Bush is from the South and most americans cant stand him either.

    48. Patrick says:

I don’t know why or how this debate got started. It’s truly childish….

I have many Russian friends…. I met them here in the states many years ago while they were here on a student work visa…. it was amazing how many preconceived notions that they had before they arrived… my friends quickly realized that these notions were completely false….

the average American family i believe is not that much different than their Russian/Georgia/other counterparts…. they are loving, welcoming people who would give the shirt off their back to help a total stranger…

We do not agree with most of our governments policies… both the presidents and congresses approval rating is below 30%… one of the other comments was correct… we are a two party system and the government is covertly trying to make it even more impossible to create more parties….

Yes there are a lot of uninformed or misinformed people in the states… I don’t think we’re alone there…

Believe this if nothing else that I have said…. If anyone of you were to come to the states you would be welcomed with open arms and love… your culture would not be ridiculed but would be embraced….. don’t believe the Bullshit you see on TV… it’s not an accurate representation of true Americans…

Lets not let them try to deviide us…

    49. Me says:

Georgia is a country which is gradually rising out of the mud. Bear in mind, this was part of Russia in the past and since the collapse of communism, it has has had to learn the systems, rules and so on that are second-nature to more established societies.

The advances Georgia is making are great, the country has stabilized and the economy is improving, jobs are becoming more available and the corruption that thrived has been driven away (or underground).

The country is vastly improved from days gone by and the people can look forward to a better European future. Oh! And the girls are drop dead gorgeous too. Summer in Georgia is is like a beauty parade.

Don’t swallow the bitter comments of neighbouring countries - come and see for yourself!

by many people from many nacionalities why?? ’cause knowledgement is universal
For what is useful all things we have discovered and all things created until now?? for benefits of human race or for benefits of some??

    54. Gearjammer says:

Thank God I’m one of the stupid, uneducated, uncultured, Ameicans who thinks the world ends at our shore lines or borders.

All this about blindness to other peoples, who is smarter than who and all puts me in mind of another “folk story”. Recalled to me by one of our Aussie brethern who posted here. One I will shair with you now.

Many years ago while I was a young stupid American buying into the government’s propoganda about the evils of commie bullshit I was sent off to fight what Springstine calls “The Yellowman” in his song “Born In The USA”. I had no particular misgivings against these folks, other than their northern brothers desire to spread the revolution and throw all of mankind under the jack boot heels of Commie oppression and a clap trap values system. So when my time came to get away from the madness for a short while I took me an R&R Downunder. Since we had all hurd so much about it I and the 2 GI’s I was with decided we go out to the local funnery and check out a few of the now famous to us Foster’s cool ones. (Which wasn’t served cool) Maybe even check out the very sexy local female indiginious personal if possiable. My dad was down under for a short while in WWII and he always talk fondly of the Aaussie ladies. Anyway, two of us were from the south, the other an ole Cowboy from the great state of Wyoming. My best Bro was from Hunstville Ala-damn-bama. He was first to order. The Shelia taking our order jump on Fred’s accent in a flash and allowed, “My goodness mates, are you laids from the American South? Are you lot real Hillbillies?” Before the evening was over she went on to tell us about how glade she was only white American troopers were coming to her fair land on “Holliday” because the blacks would cause more problems than they were worth. Then she went on to ask if we or any of the “folks” back home we in the KKK. Fred explain, “No mame, not that I know about.” Then he showed her a billfold picture of a young lady he got long letters from at mail call every week. She was an old and very dear high school freind to Fred, and I think now, one of the most beautiful black girls I have ever layed eyes on. Steve, from Wyoming, went on to say, “Nope. I’m from Big Sky country lady, and we ain’t got a thing like that in Sherley Basin. And I’ll tell ya now, some of the best cowhands my dad and I ever worked with were blacker than your shoes.” I told her that the “men folk” of my family that were alive and served in our civil war were Unionists and crossed the Cumberland Gap to join the Union Army of The west in ole Kantuck. I also took the oppertunity to explain to her that I had no issuie with black people having their God given rights to equality because I believed what it said on the Bumper sticker my coal minners daughter mothers had on the rear bumper of her car. That sticker said, “In the eyes of God all men are truely created equal.” My dad didn’t much care for blacks but he was not and never would been a Klansmen. The Klan was about a lot more than than just black repression for you highly educated elites who don’t know any better. Albeit the blacks did suffer more under the boot heels, white people suffered also. Mom showed me a better way to live and think of people. Talk poverty and welfair reform all you like but mom grew up in the coal fields of Appalachia. Dad was the son of a shair cropper who took any day labor he could find off his farm work. Both knew poverty as children in ways most of you can never in a life time understand and the only thing that got their uneducated asses out of poverety was hard work and regular employment. NOT government assistance. The three of us on R&R together in Aussieland were houch roomies back in country. Our forth roomie, Curtis, went to Thiland on his R&R because his blackass was refused entry downunder for R&R. Funny how peoples preceptions of people they don’t know are formed through exstrapolations of history, propoganda, and slanted bias media reporting. If the three of us had a thing in common beyond our service to the nation it was that two of us were true rednecks and the other the western version of the same. And we were proud of it. Look up the word in Websters sometime and see what the real meaning is compaired to the preception of what it is. I was the only one of us even close to being a true Hillbilly but because we all three spoke with an accent and had a draw we were all assumed to be “Hillbillies”. True story.

Again, I’m Glade I’m a stupid, backward, uneducated American. I’ve seen more of this world than I ever imagined I would see and I’ll take this over what you have any day. I’ve also traveled on a regular bassis over most of North America, including Alaska and Canada, and never once have I ever had to hire a ride on a damn “land ferry”. That alone speaks volumes about the State of Russia’s and eastern Europe’s domestic affairs for me. One would think givin all the highly educated brain power ya’al have you could at least figure out a way to build some all weather roads to remote areas. But…………

Ever see that clip where Americans are asked to point to where they think some countries are located on the globe?

My personal favourite idiotic American comment is the “if it weren’t for us you’d all be speaking German now”… this from a country that didn’t lift a finger against the nazis before Germany DECLARED WAR on the US. Best of all, I’ve gotten that comment for real from some retarded American fuckwad even after I told him I was from Finland… I mean, talk about FAIL… :D

    58. [...] English Russia: So there was a conflict and major American news agencies mentioned this conflict in their news [...]

    59. ugh~ that happends here in Australia as well. I’m sitting here and next to me is a group of people, you know year 12s so mature enough 17 or 18 year olds. Anyways…they were discussing the conflict between Russia and Georgia and then someone goes “Where is Georgia? Isn’t it in Russia?” and someone else answers “No, it’s in America”

-_-” I sometimes forget the stupidity of those around us…

Russian troops in America… Who is more of an idiot - the one who makes that comment as a joke or the complete idiot who takes it seriously…have another glass of vodka Ivan - shouldn’t you little soldier boys be out getting your tanks back from the big bad pirates???

    61. m.helweg says:

Yes, that may be true but at least we stop at our borders.
