Soviet Hymn

This is a Soviet hymn, recorded by all USSR pop stars right after the USSR collapsed, in 1991.

They thought this music and words would be now a part a history, because just a little bit later a new hymn appeared, with another music and words, so all people of Russia thought they are now living in a democratic state, without traces of Soviet Union.

But then a few years later, after the free goverment turned to be not so free, censorship in Mass Media appeared and…. Soviet Hymn was restored.

Now, in modern Russia the hymn is being sung on the music of the Soviet hymn. Welcome back to a new USSR - Russian Federation.

    1. It’s really unbelievable that Russians can go back to singing the tune of the anthem of the USSR, which was heard at the Winter Olympics in Italy this year.

The tune was written to glorify Josef Stalin, who killed more Russians than Hitler.

Many foolish people in the West said that after the USSR fell Russians could “never go back” to dictatorship. But Yeltsin and Gaidar warned the West that Russians could do this, and that is why they rushed to disperse the power of the Kremlin so that if backsliding occurred at least it would be harder to consolidate power.

And now it has happened. Russians have elected a proud KGB spy as their president and they have restored the Stalin anthem as their music. No more election of governors, state-controlled national television, universal conscription into the army, Cold War with the United States and attempts to take back “Soviet property” like Georgia and Ukraine.

And worst of all, not even token opposition from any sector of the Russian public or intelligentsia as these changes are made. Why are Russians brave when fighting foreign enemies but SUCH COWARDS when dealing with their own government? It’s the eternal mystery of Russia and will lead to its ultimate destruction.

    2. Leo Petr says:

Because instead of implementing a moderate Western social democracy, Yeltsin went all out on laissez-faire, Washington-consensus, neo-liberal, flat tax bandwagon. Its market extremism allowed a lot of profiteering of the sort Soviets always scaremongered about. Freedom doesn’t mean a whole lot when you are unemployed and can’t buy food.

In Russia, authoritarian “communism” is the conservative option. Democracy has been undermined by the excesses of the ideologue-driven free market system, and on the ground it looks like those two are the only options because they are the only two options Russians have lived in.

I’m not gonna comment on your bullshit again, I did it on other websites, so read that.
But one thing, you say: “It’s the eternal mystery of Russia and will lead to its ultimate destruction.”
My question is - why do you care? You should be happy. As a Russophobe (who hates all that is Russian) and an American, why should you care if our country destroys itself? You should be happy! Cheer up, go have a beer or something.
Oh, yeah, I guess I’m wrong, Russia is not destroying itself, it’s rebuilding itself and growing stronger and that really scares you, because your country won’t be the single player on the world arena anymore. :)

    4. конюхъ says:

Russia wont destroy itself, its impossible :) , im russian - i know :P

      2 La Russophobe

Georgia and Ukraine are not “Soviet property” actually, try to stude history first. All terrirories mentioned by you were the parts of the pre-revolutionary Russian Empire.

      see info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Empire
      I guess you can read.

    6. made_in_ussr says:

      Hey Hellooooo!!!

I can’t understand why you always call us cowards?!
USSR is over (it was made by people and they were not cowards, they died during the breakage of that Soviet state) and our new country is now about 15 years old, and we are now building the future for us and our children.

    7. made_in_ussr says:

By the way the current Hymn was restored because the music is fantastic and we now have an old music but new words.
Noone can compose smth what can be compared with this music and this is our proudness and there is no anything connected to Soviet state there!

    8. LEO: You are wrong. Yeltsin was not trying to create a social democracy, he was trying to disperse Soviet assets as fast as possible so that when Russians decided to go back to dictatorship they would have a hard time consolidating power. Americans were starving when they fought their revolution in 1776, but they fought. Russians were starving when they fought their revolution in 1917, but they fought. You are repeating Russophile propaganda and makign excuses for Russian failure, therefore enabling it. You are an enemy of Russia.

DRE: You’re like a machine! Posting exactly the same phrases and comments over and over again on all blogs. No wonder they banned you there as a SPAMMER.

конюхъ: The USSR destroyed itself, why can’t Russia? It loses 1 million people every year; in less than 150 years, Russia will be deserted.

ski88er: You need to study a bit of history. When the Soviet government took power, it seized all assets of Tsarist Russia. It could have let these states go free, but it kept them. Now it wants them back.

made_in_ussr: NOBODY died to bring down the USSR. You allowed Solzhenitsin to be put in the camps and exiled. You did NOTHING to bring down the USSR, it imploded because of its own corruption. Russians died fighting Hitler, but NOBODY died fighting Stalin. They passively accepted the camps and turned in their neighbors to the secret police. And today, there is NO serious opposition to Putin as he begins Cold War with the US.

Suppose Nazis has “fantastic music” in a song about killing Russians, and they made new words for it. Would that be OK with you? Aren’t Russians clever enough to write good new music? How do you think it makes Americans feel to hear that music? Do you care at all that you are making the world’s most powerful nation your enemy? Is the music good enough to destroy Russia’s future for? Get real!

    9. ski88er says:

      2 La Russophobe

So, maybe it’s up to you to decide where are the REAL borders of Russia? Then it would be ideal for you that Russia exist within the borders of Muscovia in Middle Ages?

BTW Georgia and Ukraine entered Russian Empire by their own will.

    10. ski88er says:

P.S. The Russian Anthem’s music (and lyrics, btw) has no relation to murders, expansion to the west and so on.

    11. made_in_ussr says:

      2 La Russophobe

Russians passively accepted the camps and etc. ok… our nation is to be considered coward.

      But………

      German people accepted Hitler.
      France accepted Napoleon.
      Italians accepted Musolini.
Africans accepts a lot of wild and armed bands now (!)
Americans accepts endless military actions arranged by Bush and Co.
Everybody accepts any kind of evil force all over the world. I belive only New Zealand peacefully continues their cow pasture and forget about the world together with the penguins at the South and white bears at the North (not in Russia, they don’t live here =))

So that is why I have a legal and a logical question!!!

Why did you sort us as a cowards? I wonder what can YOU do being on our place?

    12. ski88er says:

      2made_in_ussr

      don’t bother him.
he is an internet troll :)

    13. MADEINUSSR:

You are entirely wrong in saying that Americans accepted Bush’s actions. There is WIDESPREAD protest against him and there have been MASSIVE public demonstrations against his policies. However, for you to compare Bush’s military actions to Stalin’s genocide is the worst kind of bad faith.

You’re quite right to say that Germans were cowardly during Hitler’s rule. But if you had visted Germany recently, you would notice (a) it is not ruled by a Nazi (but Russia is ruled by KGB); (b) there are MANY public statements that Hitler was a maniac and Germans were wrong to support him (Russians still stay Stalin was GOOD); (c) Germany is a properous Democracy (Russia is poor and a dicatorship).

All you are doing is making EXCUSES for Russian failure, just like in Soviet times. You simply cannot ACCEPT that you are wrong and try to CHANGE for the better. This has always been the way in Russia, and that is why Russia is on the verge of extinction.

    14. ski88er: I’m not a “he,” you are a moron, and you have no response to my exposing your error other than personal abuse. you are pathetic.

    15. katjusha says:

@made_in_ussr: i agree with you, music of soviet hymn is fantastic. many people agreed with that when talking about world anthems. it’s just fantastic tune.

@La Russophobe: todays german anthem was actually used in nazi germany too. some of the words were changed and some thrown out of the anthem after world war 2. i don’t see a reason why russians shouldn’t use former soviet melody for their national anthem!?

    16. ski88er says:

      2 La Russophobe

That’s just because you, lady, are constantly trying to judge Russia and Russian w/o any knoledge about the themes discussed.

    19. NZM says:

Funny to read such an “explicite” insight into the history and politics of Russia. Well, every person goes crazy in his/HER:) own way…

    20. KATJUSHA:

      (a) The German national anthem of today was NOT written to glorify Adolph Hitler.

      (b) It’s truly disgusting that Russians think they can justify their own crimes by pointing to the crimes of others. Germany invaded Russia. Does that justify American invading Russia? If DRE murders your mother, do you have to excuse him because other people’s mothers have been murdered? If Russians can’t get past this cro magnon thinking, they are doomed.

      (c) Russia shouldn’t use the tune of the Soviet anthem because the Soviets made Russia what it is today, a total basket case. Russia should hate them, not celebrate them. For the same reason, Russians shouldn’t elect a proud KGB spy president. But if you are hell-bent on turning Russia into a desert, who am I to stop you? Vaya con dios!

    21. made_in_ussr says:

      2 La Russophobe

Massive protests are not bringing any results… I can’t see them! I can’t call Bush actions as a genocide but I know that the policy has a privilege as against of people’s life. So what do we do? How do we stop him? Let’s go and arrange one more demonstration!!! Maybe it will help us.

At present time nobody says that Stalin was a good guy exept some groups of old people who are still believing in the idea of the Soviet Union together with their own marasmus. We are in process of becoming strong and free and we need time and we are poor now but sometimes…

Anyway there is a big difference between Soviet life and nowadays and it is a positive evidence.

    22. 2 La Russophobe: You keep pointing that Russians elected Putin. Are you kidding? He was appointed by a very powerful group, when Yeltsin couldn’t keep his seat any longer. Most of Russians didn’t even know him.

2 other cool guys here: Agree with all of you. Russian hymn is “bigger than life” (most of my American friends think the same). It represents glory, and pride, and power of Russia (old and new). Some people s… in their pants when they hear it, good! There is a lot of good music, but only few pieces are that moving. For instance, American hymn is so blaaaa (no “spice” to it), that a lot of people don’t even recognize it. However, “America, the Beautiful” would make a great hymn.

And, finally, Russian nation is not destructing itself: it’s inevitably mixing with other nations (Chinese moving to Siberia, inch by inch, Caucasions moving north, etc.)
Here is the future of US: Black Chinese speaking Spanish. How about that? Self-destruction, thanks to great Bush’s amnesty plot?

    23. dRE says:

There may be protests against Bush, but I don’t hear them. And USA re-elected him without any problems, because they like what he tells them - “we’re the greatest nation in the world!”.
La Russophobe - might as well stop your propagandistic shit, you know it’s not working. You fail!

    24. 4emist says:

      2_La Russophobe -

can u tell me what are your knowledge about russia and ussr and it’s history is based on?

    25. 4emist says:

      sorry for my english

    26. dRE says:

4emist: Why do you (and some other people here) say you’re sorry for your english? Just write what you want, man - they can’t speak your language, and they’re not sorry for it. Why should you be sorry?
And La Russophobe is gonna tell you her usual “I know a lot about Russia. I’ve lived there many years”-bullshit. What do you expect from an American “i’ll-do-anything-for-money” dummy anyway? :)

    27. katjusha says:

      it’s not adolph, it’s adolf

personally i don’t see whay anyone shouldn’t elect who they want. if russians want putin, it is their right. if americans want bush, it is their right. a right to choose is a part of democracy whether you like it or not. both russians and americans chose to elect their favorites and now they have them. personally i think bush is much greater menace to the world than putin. fortunatelly i live in a totally diferent country and i feel safe, but if anyone is making me scared it is george w. bush. your president.

    31. 4emist says:

U see what reputation does mister BUSH have in the world. We can see it from the katjusha’s comment.

    32. Doug says:

I was in a hotel convention room one time when that anthem played. Everyone stood up from their tale. I later heard that a law was created that made standing during the anthem mandatory. I don’t know if that was true or not. One reason for going back to the old Soviet anthem may have simply been that it was easily recognizable, the same reason that the Russian Air Force went back to the red star on it’s aircraft a couple of years ago.

    33. Patrick says:

dRE, you seem to be a very angry young person. I have no idea who you are or where you live. You say that we don’t speak your language. True most of us don’t, beleive me it’s not that we don’t want to we just can’t. Then again there are some that do. Some of us have Russian wives and husbands and they help translate for us. Not all Americans are anti Russian. As a matter of fact until a few years ago not many Americans ever had a chance to vist Russia, you know that as well as anyone. I am not trying to start a pissing contest with you, I am just making a statement that all Americans are bad guys and have a hard on for Russia or her people.

    34. Patrick says:

Well I messed that up real good.” NOT bad guys” is what I wanted to write. Sorry for the typo. Peace Patrick

    35. I agree with Patrick. Most Americans, especially younger and middle age, (don’t know about Britts) DO like Russians and are very open minded about Russian culture, etc. Even older generation, who was brainwashed during the Cold War is very friendly. Americans are the most welcoming nation, nation of immigrants, and that’s what made America so strong in the first place.
As for some people in this forum, who seem to be upset with Russians: they either had some personal problem with one or few Russians (but you can’t judge whole nation by that, anyway) or, most likely, they are OLD, pissed off Russian immigrants themselves. I’ve seen them before: still can’t speak English very well, live on wellfare check, sit all day, playing chess and critisizing everything (old Russia, new Russia, America, their neighbours) - just miserable. They were nobody back in USSR, they’re nobody in today’s US. Sad picture!

    36. dRE says:

Patrick: Most of my comments are answers to what I hear and see on this website (including La Russophobe’s and other Russian haters’ comments). I do not hate all Americans (my best friend in high school was an American). It’s true that you don’t know me, otherwise you wouldn’t have thought so. And I know that not all Westerners dislike Russia either. But the sad truth is - most people here are being brainwashed with anti-Russian propaganda, it’s clear to everybody, and I don’t want people to have a one-sided opinion about it.
My comment about the language was to 4emist - I don’t think he has to be sorry for his english, at least he speaks some of it, whereas most people don’t know a single word in Russian. Then again, why should they?

    37. Well ofcourse the Russian Federation would not be a “free” country. The restoration of capitalism, in other words, the final steps in the stalinist counter-revolution would never have brought about democracy. Capitalism could never do that. Capitalism is the dictatorship of the big corporations. “Freedom” means the freedom for the capitalists to exploit the workers. “Democracy” enables the people to elect the ones who will implement the will of the capitalist class the comming governemental therm. This parlementairy representation has no authority of its own.

The only thing perhaps is that after the fall of stalinism one could speak more freely about things. But arguing and fighting for genume socialism, let allone communism was outlawed since the Great Purges by uncle Joe in the 1930’s. Nothing has changed in that.

The only time when there was democracy in Russia was right after the 1917 octoberrevolution, when the workers took power. Unfortunatly due to its isolation and backwardness, the Soviet state degenerated into the stalinist abomination. Wich was the end of worker’s democracy and the road to socialism and communism.

The restoration of the anthem is just at the one hand a trick to give the illusion that the good things are returning from the USSR into the Russian Federation. Yes, there were good things in the USSR for the People. Jobs, social secutity and thins as healthcare were much better before the fall of the berin wall then after. But then the real reason is that the rulers in the USSR, who transformed themselves into the new capitalist class of Russia, wanted to honour ther history.

And this rivalery between Russians and Americans? Well, the American working class and the Russian working class are brothers, they always were. The cold war was a war between the American capitalists and the Russian stalinists. The Workers of both blocks were just puppets on the world chess board for those bastards. They should have risen together and overthrown their bosses, as they should now. “Workers of the world, Unite!” remember?

I must say dogh, restoring the Soviet melody was a better choise than restoring the Czarist melody. Stalinist Russia was bad, but I feel that Czarist Russia was even worse.

    38. I have a question that perhaps a Russian person may be able to answer. I would really appreciate it!

Russia is in the process of upgrading to a new, national Lottery. It is called the OOO Orglot national Lottery.

It will involve about 14,000 Coronis lotto-machine terminals, on a new secure Lotos software platform, across eleven time-zones. A greek company is supplying all of this new, secure system.

It is said that from Murmansk to Vladivostok, and all points in between, will be able to play this new range of games.

Does anyone know, definitively, when the tickets will start to go on sale for this NEW lottery? Will it be a phased rollout from Western Russia, then eastwards? Or, will tickets go on sale across eleven time zones, simultaneously?

I myself do not read Russian, and so, when I go into the business newspapers like Interfax.ru, and Moscowtimes.ru, and Isvestiya.ru, and I cannot find definitive news on this project.

      Anyone know??!! thank you.

    39. I agree with la rushaphobe in some points, but its the goverment who made them so too…
When russians would try to do something against the goverment they sure would die in theyre sleep…
The govermnet in russia was always powerfuller then the ppl because they had spread fear and death among them, i mean serieusly take the WWII, if the soldiers have gone forward on the battlefield they got killed by germans but when they retreated they got slaughtered by theyre own comerads…what is the point in that? If the russian goverment where smarter they would let the soldiers retreat, regroup, and attack with attack back with stronger forces..what is the point of wasting men? Now what is the Point of Russia anyway???

Now dont flame at me and tell me if im wrong but serieusly this whole thing in Russia doesnt make sense…
Russian ppl are goodhearted and stuff just like ppl in Poland but they realy should do someting with the goverment… at least do the smallest thing that the world would clearly know that they dont want this…

      No offence
