Russian Sakhalin

Russian Sakhalin

The guy who made this photos lives in some city in Sakhalin region of Russia, the one that is near Japan. He didn’t expect his photos would get popular when he just wandered across his town and made them, primarily to show to his friends.

Later the link was passed from person to person and it’s still not very clear what caused them to achieve so much fame, maybe you can get a clue by seeing this photo series?

    1. Mark Rose says:

Looks like gas is about 20% cheaper than here in Canada.

      • Kichigai-san says:

There is no gas on Sakhalin.

        • Cytl says:

Is there no gas on Sakhalin?
If not, what are EXXON, SHELL, BP and Gazprom doing on this remote island?
There is HUGE amount of Oil and Gas here.
Therefore SHELL constructed the first LNG facility in Russia and laid down more than 600km pipeline here, on Sahalin

    2. Swede says:

They sure like potholes over there.

    3. Kirov says:

I do not see anything special. Just an average Russian city with bad ‘roads’, dirt everywhere, crumbling buildings and gloomy people.

    4. bonjooo says:

i think i know why these pics are famous. this city is hell on earth

    5. pimp says:

Drunk Russians don’t even care that they live in the shit hole.

    6. fgsfds says:

Are you sure that is city in Russia, not Beverly Hills?

    7. Picsius says:

Sh*t hole, like most of Russian cities.

    8. Decaying infrastructure, poor people without money, trash everywhere, lots of potholes… that’s what happens when a country changes political systems very rapidly. Hopefully, it will become a nice, clean, shiny happy place in the future.

    9. YJ says:

Can the citizen of the city just move to Moscow?

    10. FailMaster says:

Hey, what do you think the chances of me getting laid in a city like this are?

    11. Sad view, man.. very sad

    12. WOW! Extremely interesting. Very poignant collection. Let’s hope they can rebuild and reestablish the pride they apparently once had in their community.

    13. dyk trejsi says:

It looks like in Luník IX Košice:D

    14. lenin says:

      3rd world.

      Ленин всегда жыв!

    15. Jacob says:

Obviously, Russia can’t afford to maintain this Island. Maybe it’s time to return it to Japan?

    16. FailMaster says:

Hey, forgot to mention this. Did you guys see the pussy shot on one of those pics? http://media.englishrussia.com/sahalin/1_015.jpg

    17. …унылое зрелище

    18. EREEK says:

      Okay…..run-down buildings, trash, potholes.

Except for the statue of Pushkin, it looks like Philadelphia. ;)

    19. Жорик says:

Сосите хуй американские гондоны, залупоглазые пидоры нахуй!!!!

    20. Moscow is the same, except for a few areas in the center. Window dressing is BIG in all countries of the former Eastern Block. Show the world we are doing great!! Behind the polished facade there is of course decay and gloom and rot. Most of it stemming from poverty, wrong mentality [it is not my problem!!!] and most of it the result of corruption. Corruption of the mind and the behaviour.

In a way, like the Russian brides in the before and after pictures in this blog

    21. Chris says:

      Looks like parts of Detroit…

    22. Lada Niva says:

very realistic, unlike western photoshopied pictures

    23. zubbyn says:

      Looks like Romania.

    24. Simon says:

The weather and the sun light looks kinda nice. The city needs a clean up big time, but with the mountains in the background, it could be a very nice place.

    25. w says:

I still reckon its awesome and Id like to visit. Also most of crumbling buildings are earthquake damaged. Cool fotos

    26. WTF!? says:

all on this pics were result of corruption…
but now most of this places looks much better

PS: the island never belong to japan, and will not!

    27. Looks Like Bolivia and Peru. I really want to go to this place one day.

    28. I love potholes. Sapienti sap…i guess.

    29. Fero says:

Looks pretty devastated…almost the roads does look that :/

    30. A.R. says:

Look, there were neglected buildings, but northern cities all over the world tend to look bad in those days when the snow starts to melt, as the the thaw devastates roads and reveals the build of litter over the winter concealed by the snow.

      Big deal!

    31. ll Uncool J says:

      Yo! Give a god-damn hoot! Don’t M***Fing polute M****Fer!!!

It look just like my hood in New Jersey except there aint no brothers hangin’ on the street!

    32. Marian says:

They certainly are compelling photos. There is something about each one that holds your attention.

    33. S says:

Reminds me of my hometown.. very lovely photos, I love the “mood” what you get from seeing them.. I’d like to visit that town once.

    34. alibi says:

O fuck… so the roads are shit. Big deal. You disgusted by the ugly facades. Jeez. The facades are ugly indeed. Fuck the facades. The country is just recovering after a century of slaughtering. It got plagued back in 1917 and has been raped and butchered since. It’s still a matter of survival but the country is trying to climb up. Slowly and awkwardly for sure. The Russians have learned the hard way that there should be no rush. They’ve rushed before… So they’ve learned to take it easy. And the roads can wait. The roads sure are very important but they can wait. They will come along. And the facades too. There are plenty other things the Russians want to do first. They want to enjoy the feeling of being able to spend money on themselves. Just feel that feeling. It’s been a long time since an average Russian could have money to spend and enjoy spending it. On themselves. Dumb Russians - instead of fixing their shitty roads they spend money on some silly stuff. Like - their houses or travel. Or say education for their kids. Or a nice car. Have you been inside those buildings with ugly facades. You’ll be amazed how much money the Russians spend on their homes which are located in those ugly buildings with disgusting facades. A kitchen for 30 grand isn’t out of ordinary. Of course they wouldn’t mind to have a nice façade. And they will… well if they wouldn’t rush again. As for now - if the roads are bad they will get a 4WD. Have you noticed that the cars are pretty decent on the picks. And by the way - the picks are dated back in April 2006. I have no idea if there are better roads now in the town. Probably not. They will come along. It’s been just a few years since the nation was on the verge of clinical death. So - don’t get too exited about the ugliness of their cities..

    35. nuteteme says:

well … before Romania entered the EU we had almost the same crappy surroundings and most of us used to take this kind of pictures and post them all over the web, I call it the “silent yell for help”(the situation got better but we still need to work hard to reach a higher level of civilization )
It’s tough and depressing to live in such towns, its up to the people to make a better living for them selves and the 1st thing they need to do is to stop trowing crap around, form a “better life group” and infiltrate in the local council and solve the problems, with high corruption is hard to keep a back bone but it’s totally worth it when you see the fruits of your work.

People who don’t know about hard life ( and I don’t mean the hard life living in new york or london, which is actually la vida locca, ) will never understand these pictures nor the psychological struggle of the residents.

      Peace!!!

    36. Gennady says:

C`mon guys, every even a big city, or town or somewhat living place has a same shit holes! New York, Paris or even Glasgow!
These pictures were made buy a snobbish moscow guy, he is pretending to be a famous designer and really hates everything besides himSuperself.
I live in this city, here is Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, a capital of Sakhalin region. I agree it looks ugly when snow melts, bottles, dog shit everywhere. But do not call us who live here a Russian Drunkoholics? There different people who survive there. The climate is terrible there but there is a good and friendly people in there. Ask those expats who have worked there. Here the worst places here on these pictures and try to find better looking ones, there plenty of those on the web. Try picasa web albums or else. My city is changing, roads are getting better and so on. Please to not make any cliché while watching these crippy pictures. Try these for some photos, it is all in Russian but you can click on links and decide http://photos.sakhalin.name/

      • BoneS says:

Those pics prove nothing. Pictures of cats and dogs and cars and women?… What the fuck does that prove!? The few pics of the ugly city are still the same as these ones. Dont understand why Russian people are always waiting for the government to do something. Dont you have any pride yourselfs to do anything?? How hard can it be to clean up that trash and put up trash bins!? Fuck the government and take matters into your own hands! Set an example to follow! Becasue i can tell you, the government dont give a shit at all what happens to you over there. P.s lay off the booz D.s

        • anonim says:

aha… so if someone takes few bad pictures of you and your body parts you will not be able to prove that you are not ugly? :))))))))))) stop looking at places and give advices to others - look at the mirror and do something about your face and body, look inside your soul and do something to it as well, wash your own dishes and mind your own business - as now you are tooooo faaar from perfect…

    37. Yohan says:

fantastic! now we know how Sakhalin does look like.

sometimes, you drunk ass fuckers should better spend into cleaning up that mess and build new roads instead of buying S600 Mercedes and 7xx BMW’s, fucking idiots.

      thanks.

    38. odin says:

they show only photos of the worst places in Russia. In europe or usa it would be called “racism”

    39. This photos are great, made me very creative and i cleaned the apartment.

    40. Ole says:

I like the feeling of these pictures. It’s as if it could be anywhere.

    41. daVinci says:

      ребята, это просто ПИЗДЕЦ…

      будто после бомбардировки

    42. authorized1 says:

I am sure the life in any Japanese zoo is better than in this shit-hole, just give Sakhalin (back) to the Japanese and they’d do a picture frome the picture-book out of this shit.

      • Larn says:

You are very strange people…Give hole Africe to Japan, almost African countries leaves bad…You tinking only of good looking City, do you even imagine how Locals will leave with Japanese?

    43. YukonWho? says:

I think that these pictures really show the best and the worst.
The infastructure is in such a bad way, crumbling buildings, potholes (whoa), but did you notice there are trees in almost every picture? Where money is not available, homemade fixes were implemented like the homemade wooden bridge. http://media.englishrussia.com/sahalin/1_020.jpg

These pictures were also taken the the early spring, the time of hope in the north, while your surroundings look horrible as beercan and dog poop melt out of the snow. Sweet and Sour.
Thanks for posting these, love the site.

    44. meistan says:

Amazing how important it is for the West to feel superior. Enjoy it, you smug bastards, if it makes you feel good about yourselves. Have you seen the Paris Banlieu? What a shithole. In fact, Paris is a shithole through and through.

    45. aussiesam says:

We have some bad places in Australia but that is one depressing photo run, i wonder what the suicide rate is there. Russians seem patriotic, but not proud.

    46. Molott says:

It seems that those Post-Soviet people prefer to drink away the problems rather tan try to solve them PROPERLY. Well, as a Russian myself I can only prove that it takes a lot of determination for them to complete anything what they’ve started.

    47. I’m really suprised by how much trash is just laying around everywhere. Just picking up the trash would make a world of difference. I think a fellow already mentioned that they keep it cleaner during the summer, so I suspect a lot of this must be trash that gets covered in snow all winter long, and then in the spring thaw: suprise! Trash!

Let’s hope things improve. And I bet they will.

    48. Joppie says:

My god , what a depressing place that must be!! Not quite a vacation worth

    49. Dimmus says:

The photoes are old and early spring it’s the worst period there.
“one day Jesus was walking with his followers, and they passed by the carcass of a dog.
“The followers said, ‘How this dog stinks!’
“But Jesus said, ‘How white are its teeth!’”
The vision of the World depend on what the photographer wants to see…

    50. yushkina says:

is not a real situation, old photos… fools

    51. Hi, everybody! This place actually not as bad as you think. And i am telling you this not only because i live on this island, many foreigners who already left this island, miss it a lot. People who never been hear can not really judge how bad place is. And YOU are not this person who can tell “Give island to Japanese!”. Here is lot’s of russians who love their motherland!

    52. Хм…Сахалин еще рай по сравнению с Курилами и с Курильским БЫДЛО…

    53. Nataliya says:

      http://vv.sakhalin.name/?div=cat&cat=11
      A few more photos
I love Sakhalin. This is a wonderful place on Earth

    54. Kim_Kim says:

u fuken wankers. I mean u who’s throwing shit on the place u never visited and on the people u never met and seen. Being a local to Sakhalin I can proudly claim that Sakhalin island is one of the best places in the world and it is definitely worth visiting. don’t form yr opinion basing on these photos only. This pics selection is aimed to show shitty side of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and it surely exists as anywhere else in any city in the world. I do confess there is much left to be desired here but I strongly believe that it’s bloody unfair to present a collection of photos called with only ugly pics inside. (btw I have never seen some of places presented in the collection and it makes me feel that the author of the pics made all his efforts to represent Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in unfavourable light. Must admit he succedeed). check this out just to compare. http://photos.sakhalin.name/?div=cat&cat=11.
I am not saying we r perfect, noone is. I am saying spot positive sides and make the life brighter.
      Love & Peace
      KKT

    55. Mia says:

It is absolutely shocking how some can be so superficial, racist and abusive. “drunk and stupid Russians”, “idiots”, “give back the island to japan”… I presume comments like that would come from Uneducated, shallow and bitter person. No, Im not justifying people who live on Sakhalin or the Russian government, but there is no way one can stereotype and generalise ALL Russians under category of mentioned above. Thats like saying all Americans are uneducated and fat and stupid or all English are stuck up and bad in the sack. Its just not right! And to those who say that island belongs to Japan, why dont you check out some library and read Real history books and Not just wiki online, there was a war between Japan in the past but island belong to indigenous Ainy, just like Australia belonged to aborigines before european colonies came. Japan claims that Kuril islands belong to them, but Sakhalin is NOT part of those island. So before making any stupid comments (yes stupid and rude) please check the facts.

    56. Anna says:

It was published on one of Russian websites and I’m agreed that the pics look awful, but trust me, as a local person that lives there, it all is not that bad as it seems

    57. kainzzo says:

I live in Wisconsin in the USA. After the winter snow thaws MOST cities here look like these pictures. The expansion and melt of ice destroys many roads and the thaw of 5 months of snow reveals 5 months of garbage that has been thrown out.

It really doesn’t look that different than any northern USA city.

    58. stefandms says:

The filth is not the only problem, as we can see from the photos..Looks like pretty much everything is falling apart…

    59. Anton says:

The spring is always gray and dirty. But Sakhalin autumn is beautiful.

    60. Snow causes many damages, to constructions etc. And in Sakhalin, it snows A LOT. No wonder why after the meltdown, the city looks like a big bin

    61. Ivan says:

      Ok, I’m from there.
Old pics, though, but nothing to deny. Many things have changed, but still much remains untouched. I wish our city hall would have it all along the corridors so that clerks and decision-makers see it every morning.

In fact, the city is still not so bad, early spring is the worst period, depicted there. The location is still awesome and mountains around are just great. No one is going to give it to Japan, because it simply does not belong to them. As for the peace treaty they claim to sign, when Russia gives some of the islands, - it’s just trash. There is never a need for a peace treaty with the defeated state, when they signed their loss.
