ATM mistake lead to $700,000,000 credited to bank account
This story happened a few days ago in Ekaterinburg city, in Ural region in Russia. One man decided to add some money to his bank account via ATM. He went to the nearest one and put 2,000 roubles (around $74). The ATM took the money and returned him a slip. Here is the photo of that slip:
The amount on the slip was 2,006,699,00 RUR (around $7,430,000). He was astonished, he has got another slip – and still the amount was the same. So he decided to go the bank and tell them about the mistake ATM made.
He arrived to the bank and told a clerk his story, also showed a slip, but the clerk was not interested in the situation. “Many strange things happen buddy” told the clerk to the 2 billion roubles account holder, “Come back please some other time, I’ve got lot of things to do right now”.
The man got offended with such a response. He went straight to the nearest ATM and started withdrawing the cash. All the day he was going from one ATM to another withdrawing the daily limit of each one. Between the withdrawals he was again putting some more millions to his account in total his balance reached 20 billion roubles ($70 million). 
All the money he put in big shoe boxes and afterwards took all those boxes and went again to that bank clerk. He rammed the box to the clerk desk. “What’s this? What are you doing?”, asked him the clerk. “It’s money. Millions of roubles”.
Clerk was really shocked. He called other bank workers and they all got greatly amazed by what they were presented. They took the money from the “magic” cardholder, told him “thank you” for his honest and unusual behavior, and he went home.
On the way home he again went to a nearest ATM and tried the trick. And again he has got 2 billion roubles available after his 2 thousand transfer. He again called the bank but nobody wanted to be in charge of this growing incident. Only a few hours later all the ATMs of this bank were turned off.
It’s a typical Russian incident from my point of view. I don’t think that in any other country bank workers could be so irresponsible, mistakes so huge buy amounts and poor people so honest.
This story was also published in Russian newspaper “Komsomolskaya Pravda” and in some Russian blogs.

[...] Como son las cosas…, hace unos dias un hombre que vive en Ekaterinburg (Urales-Rusia), decidio hacer un deposito a su cuenta via ATM, el deposito en cuestion era de 2000 rublos (74 Dolares), cuando se le ocurrio revizar su saldo bancario, se vio con la sorpresa que tenia casi 7 millones y medio de dolares. Fue directamente al banco para dar aviso del enorme error que este tenia, pero la persona que lo atendio le dijo que no tenia tiempo en ese momento y que regresara mas tarde, ofendido esta persona comenzo a retirar el dinero y depositar via ATM en su cuenta…, retiro cerca de 70 millones de dolares, y su cuenta estaba en cerca de 700 000 000 millones de dolares (Si leyó bien), puso todo el dinero retirado en caja de zapatos y llevo todas las cajas al banco, exactamente a la persona que lo habia atendido dejandolo en SHOCK Lo curioso de todo esto aparte de la honestidad de la persona (Si, resulta curioso que hoy en dia alguien haga eso) es que volvio a hacer las mismas operaciones via ATM y volvieron a aparecerle en su cuenta depositos millonarios, hasta que horas mas tarde el banco tuvo que apagar su sistema ATM Cosas de la vida… Tags : Curiosidades, Miscelanea [...]

nice story but ur reading and/or math is off… that last one is a decimal point, not a comma. still some nice extra cash but it’s 20 million rubles ($70,000), not 2 billion (7,000,000).
The story is stolen from ’some Russian blogs’ together with images, putting your watermarks on them is a bad thing to do.
The city it happened in is Novosibirsk, not Ekaterinburg.
The person who was involved in the incident serves in a police, economic crimes division, so his behaviour is quite understandable.
As for this passage “It’s a typical Russian incident from my point of view. I don’t think that in any other country bank workers could be so irresponsible, mistakes so huge buy amounts and poor people so honest.”..

Similar thing happened to me at a Citibank in Los Angeles, I deposited $21,918.97 and the clerk between taking my deposit talking on the phone and flirting with his girlfriend inputed it all as $2,191,897.00. I told him “it looks like you are putting a lot of money into my account” and he said “yeah, man, you gotta lotta money” The money stayed in my account for a few days, I was tempted to withdraw and run, but two million did not seem enough to risk a chase :). I keep a balance printout the wall. I also stopped doing business at Citibank.

I’m sorry, but the operation receipt indicates transfer from one bank account to other and I see no one word about accepting any money at all. Keeping in minds that these two accounts differ only in one last digit (plus control digit), one might suspect that this is transfer of $784000 between sub-accounts of an common account of members of one family or (less possible) that someone has got really cool salary via salary payment program.
Man, keep the money! If the bank doesn’t want to listen, it’s their fault.
