Soviet Soldiers at World War 2 in Color

Such photos always fascinate me. I mean the color photos from the past, the older the better. These ones is no exception. We got used to see only black and white photos from the World War 2 - the color photography was very expensive at that times and actually was not widely implemented, and especially usually nobody took the expensive equipment to the battlefront. Still there are some color photos from the times where our grandfathers were young, like 70 years ago.

OMG these pictures saddenned me . mainly because seeing so much poverty and poor young innocent souls sent to the jaws of death to be used as cannon fodder by might German firepower! Russians should’ve surrendered without humiliatingly fighting back the Germans. In anycase they would’ve been better off under Germans anyways. Look at modern day Russia its a shithole where as Germans would’ve turned into a more developed country like in the west.
Hahahahah what a donkey!
OMG look at the brave Russians liberators who saved Europe from fascist tyrann, Russians are the bravest people in the world!
Do you have any idea how many millions of RUSSIANS Stalin killed? When the communists came to power in Russia they wiped out almost all officers in the army, hundreds of thousands were murdered by Stalin. Because of that, they lost big time against the tiny nation of Finland when they attacked them. Then they realized that they messed up real bad and barely managed to retrain the army before the Germans attacked (The loss against Finland was proof to Hitler that Soviet were a “lower race”). And during the WW2, Stalin sent tens of millions of people to their deaths, and even after the war he kept on killing his own people. Of the German POW’s that were captured by the Soviets, few returned. There might have been some “brave” soldiers, but most of them had only two options; fight, or die. Once the soldiers came to Germany itself there were few women that managed to avoid rape and death, as a payback for what happened in Soviet. And then there’s the Warsaw uprising, where Stalin ordered his soldiers to hold and only moved in after the Germans had wiped them out and demolished the city. No, the Soviets were not so great. Even worse than the Nazis in many cases.

>Of the German POW’s that were captured by the Soviets, >few returned.
——
Get your facts. About 20% of german POWs have died.
About 70% of russian POWs have died.
There might have been some “brave” >soldiers, but most of >them had only two options; fight, or die.
————-
Please don’t forget that those soldiers came to Russia, together with the SS. So they got what they asked for.
>Once the soldiers came to Germany itself there were few >women that managed to avoid rape and death, as a payback >for what happened in Soviet.
————–
So, all of the german women were raped and then killed? And then raped again, maybe? Get your facts. Twenty million soviet people were murdered by the nazis in the war. How many women were raped by the german soldier is beyond count… When soviets came to Germany, there was an order that any soldier who would rape a German women - will be sent to Siberia (the reason for that order was so Stalin can kill some more of his own people, of course). Not everywhere the order was follwed but compared to what the nazis did…
>And then there’s the Warsaw uprising, where Stalin >ordered his soldiers to hold and only moved in after the >Germans had wiped them out and demolished the city.
———-
Again, get your fact right. The uprising was initiated without any coordination with Stalin because the british wanted to prevent Stalin - due to politics -from having any claim on saving Warsaw. But when things turned badly and they asked Stalin for help - they did when the Soviet army just finished fighting, had to be regrouped and ressuplied. Sending soviet soldiers to Warshaw at that time would have resulted in their total death without achieving anything. All what Stalin could have done was to send airplains and supplies - and he did that.
>No, the Soviets were not so great. Even worse than the >Nazis in many cases.
——
fuck you, stupid cow. get yourself an 88 tatoo. On your fucking frontal lobe of the brain.
No he did not. He forbid to use russian side airports by Polish Supply Aircraft. Only few suply flights was done. Please read more and do not write stupid things.
They’d have been better off by being in KZ camps ?
Give me a break
Sweetheart, just in case you haven’t been told my a good friend or doctor, I’m letting you know now: YOU HAVE A SCREW LOOSE.
money is not everything and poor does not mean miserable. if you are happy when you are well-fed, it does not mean that everyone is like you. people are not dogs, you know: it matters, where you get food from.
You really have no idea do you? Turning back the Nazis was one of the few good things to come out of Stalins reign. If the nazi armies hadn’t been depleted by this defeat, and if they’d enlisted the red army and their supplies, then hilter may have won the war. There was no humiliation about it, in fact you sadden me; why would you post such a humiliating post?
Your post is an affront to all the “poor young innocent souls” who gave their lives in the Russia-German war.
wow ..and the English should’ve never left India then right?….or you suppose india is like paris or new york? if you wanna see a “shithole” head down that way.
Not all of these pictures are original color pictures. Some of them are just grayscale pictures which were colored later. Who cares, they are all nice. Fascism should not pas! Long live CNT-FAI, long live CCCP!
By the way people, I suggest you to watch the 1945 victory parade of the Soviet’s which is a COLOR film(Yes, a color film made in 1945 and the quality is not so bad ;D) Just search for it on the web.
Hey you stupid Paki can you please kill yourself so the world can be a better place? If not give me your address so I can have sex with your ear rape you anally then wipe my dick on your drapes. All the while 3 generations of your family watches
Thank You
Borshet
your a stupid fucking asshole with a brain like a child, you should be shot and pissed on.Then again I would’nt piss on you even if you were on fire…..ASSHOLE.
Or they may have turned the Russian people into slaves which was Hitler’s plan.
hey ms india, wanna see a real shithole….. Urban New Delhi India… http://www.db.com/careers/en/images/India_(Delhi)_iStock_000001307820Small_rdax_500×335.jpg hahah dumb shit….
people just ignore her….
who are you to call russians anything. You don’t anything about our culture, history or war tactics. Russians achieved many goals and look at russians today. rich, have nice cars, houses and own a lot of property. so think again before you open your big mouth. Germany is the reason for world war 2. germany attaked russia [you should know history] and I hope you know that germans are the reason why most of the jews in this world suffered because of the god damn germans. im not scared at all to say that im 13 years old. what are you going to do about it!!!???
这些照片很多都不是原本的彩色,而是人为地上的色
Miss India (Paki)is the kind of facist garbage these soviets humiliated. The muslim facists will soon reap the horror and cruelty they have sown and what a beautiful day that will be.
First
They are great. Good pics and propoganda that is well done.
I wonder if any of those soldiers took part in soviet war crimes, like murdering civilians in Finland or eastern europe, or murdering POWs
They propably took part in the same war crimes as any other soldiers took part in.
you mean that any soldier is guilty of raping, murdering civilians nad/or POWs?
Between the nazi exterminations, the japanese in China, the allied bombing campaigns against civilian population centers and the soviets in Germany, yeah, everybody had blood on their hands.
The western allies conducted themselves far better, but a soldier is fundamentally a soldier.
US and British soldiers didn’t suffer a brutal occupation with millions of their citizens murdered. Neither did 3.5 million of the prisoners of war die of starvation.
Thank you for bringing things into perspective a bit.
some pic’s are staged and propoganda as well as mixed with some modern recrested pic’s . The sovit soldier’s that did meet any western forces were sent back to sovier Siberia. The Government was as much as the German or Japanese .
Well, yeah, not every soldier, but certainly in every army in every war.
All the worst abuses stem from racism. If you want your rank & file soldiers to fight fanatically - you have to portray the enemy as animals who deserve to die. Quite difficult to stop war crimes if that is your message to your soldiers/people.
No. Only soviets. Unlike germans, of course who, especially the SS, were the modern knights.
http://englishrussia.com/images/ww2_color/58.jpg - wtf ?
Maybe a rangefinder of some kind?
It’s a stereoscopic rangefinder. Basically each end has lens and a prism in it which are targeted at the eyepiece. You rotate one of the cylinders thus moving one of the prisms. When the two images overlap in the eyepiece you have an angle and a width (the tube length) and thus you can calculate the range (distance) often from a table on the tube.
See??? my country also has color fotografs from the war! Not just u.s. and a! IS NICE!
WOW! I’m speechless, this is the BEST post so far for me!
I’d like to thank the creators of this website for the awesomeness =)
The damaged German tank picture - is that from shaped charge rounds? It’s pretty cool, it looks like steel was butter for a second!
Also, question: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GUY LOOKING INTO???
http://englishrussia.com/images/ww2_color/58.jpg
It was a Soviet tank, a KV
Note that not all of the rounds went off/bounced off. Look at the first four impact points on the hull from left to right. The back of the rounds are sticking out. I would guess that they are 2-3cm across. So if I’m correct they were 20-30mm rounds. Given that I’m guessing someone peppered that tank with an anti-aircraft gun like a Flak-30 or Flak-38.
I’m not certain if they’d be effective against heavy armor like that. But if I was facing down and tank and that’s the heaviest weapon I had I’d sure try. If nothing else I’m certain it was scary as hell hearing those things bounce off your armor inside that tank.
Thanx for the info, just read about the Flak guns, those things are pretty damn impressive. I guess if you shoot any tiny thing with enough velocity, it’d be deadlier than shooting something heavy (according to F=mv^2)
The reason I thought shaped charges were involved is because the steel melted <- however, no shaped charges have pointy steel projectiles in them =) So I guess I’m wrong!
Also for your second question, look at the thread two post above about the stereoscope range finder (the thing the guy is looking into).
Yeah, I did, pretty informative. You ex-military?
Nope; just interested in military history.
The stereoscopic rangefinder I know about from my family. My dad was the chief gunnery officer on the USS Frank Knox (a gearing class destroyer) during the Korean War. His station was in a turret above the bridge and it had a huge (like 20foot) stereoscopic range finder built into it in addition to the radar, binoculars and a mechanical firing solution computer to help him aim the guns.
Whoa, so your dad was a weapons officer in the navy - I was in the navy! I’m also nuts about the military tech =)
It blows my mind - how before computers and electronics, people figured out how to solve complex problems 100% MECHANICALLY!
The KV-1 you are speaking of was hit by 37mm, 50mm, 75mm and 88mm rounds. It appears to be used as target practice of some sort because of the numerous rounds that pierced the turret and hull. One or Two rounds piercing the armor is usually sufficient to kill/incapacitate the crew. The 75mm and 88mm rounds were the death of this tank. The 37mm and 50mm rounds are the ones that appear to make the armor look like butter. They were fired at very close range. More than likely the shots were of the solid variety rather than HEAT rounds.
YesZ my country also haz great fotosjop artitS! ISZ VERY NAAISZ!
How did those bad-asses get Japanese flags? Daaaaamn… The one with soldiers jumping off the tank is awesome.
Well, maybe… cause Red Army was actually fighting Japanese? How do you think the Kurilla [sorry for misspelling] islands got under USSR rule?
I’m always amazed how adding colours to these pictures can make them so more real. I suppose when the photo is obviously an old black and white image we can safely file it away as belonging in the past, maybe the colour brings the image back to the present. Either way it’s a great collection of photos
Some of these aren’t real color photos- see “colored by lex’.
looks like all of them actually manually colored
still great work
Miss India must be Latvian…
Miss India must be_fucked in the head…
wow look at how happy they are raping and pillaging Europe.
All in a fulls day of work for a kodachrome group of pseudo-warrior drunks
I suppose you would rather have had the nazi’s win ?
ivanushka durachok
I remember those times! Very nice! Me and other Russian soldiers were show ladies SEXY TIME! against their will!
Russian army good! We had food very often!
I would like to use those nurses! WAAWAA-WEEEWA! IS NIICE!
Miss India, if you no like Russia, you can just shave the pubis from your khram! Russia the best!
Well ronan, in the late part of the war the USSR went in the war against Japan too, they took the Kuril Islands from them and it´s rummored that something that motivated them to enter in war against Japan was the revenge of the Russian defeat in the Russo-Japanese war, between other factors
Except 3 or 5 photos, the rest are colored B&W photos. The guy in the http://englishrussia.com/images/ww2_color/58.jpg it’s using a optical rangefinder.

The guy with moustache in this pic http://englishrussia.com/images/ww2_color/14.jpg reminds me of Saddam Hussein. LOL
very nice fotos. thanks very much.
No intention to spoil the mood, but most of these photo’s, if not all, are hand painted BW photo’s. Old school Photoshop, so to speak. Quite well done in most photo’s !
I got suspicious when I noticed how shiny and well-painted the artillery and the tanks were… no signs of wear !
LOL yep… especially this one:
http://englishrussia.com/images/ww2_color/78.jpg
Still, you have to admire the effort! I can’t stop watching these amazing pics.
This one’s my favorite:

Most of these wartime photos appear to have been hand-tinted rather than being true color photographs. That was a very common procedure through the mid-to-late 1950s, when color photography got cheap(er).
The Soviets also invaded Manchuria, rounding up what was left of the Japanese army.
Well, Ahs-so-l, let me remind you. The Japanese Empire invaded China first (Massacre in Nanjing - more then 200 000 civilians killed brutally). Then attcked Perl Harbour in a mean way. What were you expecting for?
Albeit color brings out the realism of a photo in some respects, these are black and white photos that have been colorized. Although I am not sure when each were enhanced, Adobe’s Photoshop can do this job very easily. I was a photo restoration professional for many years, also, unless these photos were hidden away, any sunlight would ‘wash’ away the red spectrum, leaving a blue-ish image today, anything 20 years old from today begin to lose its vibrant color. the men standing on a bridge, was the only one I could say, was a color photo. Beautiful photos however.
I agree with you, the men on the bridge is probably the only true color picture. Typical Kodak bluish shine BTW..
I don’t want to sound extreme, but compared to Russians, Germans were BARBARIC and worse in Russia.
Death rate of German POWs in Russian captivity = 14%
Death rate of Russian POWs in German captivity = 64%
Oh, one more thing: Germans burned Russian villagers alive.
I guess the most important thing is for that the whole world knows what happened. Know the nature of the kraut.
Where did you get these figures ?
Percentages do not mean a lot. How about some absolute figures ? I think Germans did not have that many Russian POWs to begin with.
If I’m correct i.e. almost all soldiers in Von Paulus’ army were captured at Stalingrad [91,000 or so] and only about 5000 returned [1955]. Over 25 % died within a few weeks.
“Percentages do not mean a lot. How about some absolute figures ?”
^^^ Ehm… no. Actually the exact opposite of that. Numbers don’t mean crap, percentages give an idea. I got those figures from some the history channel, but not just that - I’m a big enthusiast on ww2, so I read a crapload of stuff also.
May I recommend this site: http://www.iremember.ru <– I’d like to see some revisionist idealist “historian” argue against veterans’ actual memories.
Look it up, douchebag. http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?lang=en&ModuleId=10007178 About 3.5 million out of 5.7 million Soviet prisoners of war died in German capitvity, largely to do starvation and disease. German treatment of Soviet POWs differed dramatically from German policy towards POWs from Britain and the United States, countries the Nazis regarded as racial equals to the Germans. Of the 231,000 British and American prisoners held by the Germans during the war only about 8,300 — 3.6 percent — died in German custody.
If you have 100 rubles and lose half, you can say ‘I lost 50% of my assets’ or ‘I lost 50 rubles’. Both are true, but the first one sounds completely different, quite devastating in fact.
If you have 100000 or 1000 POW and 16% die, It’s clear that 16% of 100000 is a more devastating number than 16% of 1000. That’s basically my point. That’s why I feel absolute numbers are also important.
A percentage, ok, but a percentage of what number ?
As for WWII memeories, read Vasily Grossman, he was no.1 war reporter for ‘Red Star’, the official Red Army paper. His books and notes have been republished all over the world. he was an eyewitness who wrote down what he saw the minute he saw it, not 10 or 40 years later, when memories can change quite a lot over time. You can find a lot about him in Wikipedia, for starters.
Dear ER friends,
Once upon a time, when I was working as an intelligent operative in Germany, building my cells of Hezbollah operatives, I found a copy of these photos, along with the secret document attached below. I don’t believe it, but I will let you form your own opinion. Here is the text:
This document and the accompanying photos reveal a little-known secret about the war, and explains the REAL reason Soviet forces made such a lightning advance into Germany, how the postwar black market was formed, how it influenced future Russian leadership, and how homosexuality gained a foothold in the Soviet Navy.
Rather than explain the whole story for you in a long boring document, I will lead you to the truth, gently, through a photo narrative.
Our story begins with the opening photo, where Soviet soldier Maksim and Soviet nurse Elena shake hands outside the nurses’ bunker to “seal the deal,” a deal which would have historic consequences, including the post-war division of Europe.
The deal allowed Maksim’s soldiers to have unlimited copulation with the nurses in exchange for pillaged booty taken from enemy soldiers, civilians, and the countryside. Why was it important, you ask? Well, the nurses and other Soviet females had previously offered sex for free, due to obligations of patriotism. However, after opening a box of medical supplies from the USA, Elena found two contraband books which were slipped into the package by Bill, an American propagandist and psychological warfare expert. The books were Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations,” and Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”
Elena secretly began to read these decadent capitalist books and, upon learning from Smith that there is one sort of labor which adds value to the subject upon which it is bestowed, and another which has no such effect,” she realized the sexual freebies were adding no value to her. On the contrary, they were wearing her out for nothing, and therefore should be considered “unproductive labor.”
Upon further reading about how to accumulate capital, she realized she and her fellow females had what could be considered “investment capital,” namely, themselves, and they therefore resolved to form an unofficial “corporation” from which to “do the business.” They adopted the lessons from Mr. Carnegie in how to manipulate the “hidden hand” of self-interest, and to talk people into doing business for reasons other than “the collective requires it,” or “it’s your patriotic duty.”
Maksim, a modern Spartacus and a natural leader despite his Soviet school education and the collectivist mentality, knew this deal would motivate his soldiers to advance without fear into German territory faster than other troops (after all, there is no room in a man’s mind for fear when his mind is full of thoughts of lusty nurses), which would in turn enable Maksim to gain a foothold in the “new German economy.”
After the initial deal was made, here’s how the story unfolded:
Photo # 1, Arkady, Artur, Anton, and Andrei, also known as the “A-Team,” heard about the arrangement between Elena and Maksim. After receiving intelligence from aerial scouts that there is a large country mansion just behind German lines, they now bolt forward in search of loot. Andrei, the man in the bottom hatch, has decided he can run faster than the tank, so he is about to jump out and run as an infantryman, straight for the Gemans. The psychological effect of seeing an infantryman running AHEAD of the tanks instead of BEHIND them led the Germans to believe their situation was hopeless, and they surrendered without a fight. Andrei single-handedly stormed the mansion and collected his treasure—three tins of German coffee, two kilos of fresh butter, and a large tube of anal lube—and then sprinted toward Elena’s bunker to trade his treasures for his “reward for heroism.”
#2, Word has traveled fast about the deal. Russian female sniper Marina has decided it is crazy for her and her “spotter” to continue giving away sex, and now they hope to enter the market as competitors to Elena’s nurses. Here we see Marina responding to a Russian soldier who has offered three bottles of Riesling wine for a “ten-minute threesome” in the “sniper’s nest.” Marina, adapting quickly to the tough rules of capitalism, thinks ten minutes with her and her partner are worth five bottles, and signals accordingly.
#3, Russian soldier Sasha has crawled to within a few meters of a German machinegun position. Wishing to gain enough booty to trade for sex with Elena, but also wanting to stay alive long enough to enjoy it, he now writes a quick letter to the Germans, offering to make a deal. Since Sasha is part of the “corporation” (Soviet Army) which has been aggressively seizing a greater share of the “market” (the battlefield), Sasha is in a “strong bargaining position.” His offer is straightforward—“give me your watches, your wedding bands, your sexy handmade high-top black leather boots, and all the chocolate from your rations, or I will lob my hand grenade into your position and then stick my bayonet up your anus.”
#4, Sadly, in some Russian Army units, homosexuality destroyed the unit’s will to fight. Here we see some Russian soldiers who did not have a desire for sex with Elena, Marina, or any of the other Russian females. Here we see members of one such unit engaging in pre-copulation groping and kissing. So, instead of aggressively penetrating German lines, they spent their time and energy aggressively penetrating each other’s anus.
We see several photos of Soviet soldiers aggressively pushing forward in search of loot. Then we reach photo # 10, where we see that Maksim has recruited elements of the Soviet Air Force to join him. From the air they will identify loot-filled targets, and guide Maksim’s soldiers there. In return, Maksim will issue chits to members of the Air Force. These chits vary in value, and entitle the holder to various forms of sexual service at Elena’s bunker.
In photo # 13 we see the same arrangement has been made with the Soviet Navy, and just in time, as this crew had just resorted to their first experiment with homosexuality. You can see the victim and newest member of the crew, Vadim, looking lost and confused as he sits down, exhausted, to eat his meal. Meanwhile the other crew members, embarrassed at their loss of discipline and their abuse of their shipmate, look on sheepishly.
Speaking of sheep, in photo # 23 we can see an example of adaptation and ingenuity. Here we see Oleg, leader of a band of brothers who, despite their best effort, could not be the first unit to arrive at any place laden with loot. They found only a few modest homes and one farm after another. Oleg knows there are many soldiers “in the same shoes” and, in a desperate attempt to enter the market, he designs a special pair of boots. Here he demonstrates them and shows how the tall, open tops allow easy insertion of sheep’s hind legs, which prevents the sheep from running away upon sexual penetration by the soldier, thereby allowing Soviet soldiers to achieve release of sexual tension without having to obtain loot or, even worse, go the route of the sailors in the previous photo.
Oleg plans for his unit to make many pairs of the boots and sell them to other soldiers, which will enable them to save money to spend later on Elena’s nurses. What we see with Oleg is a classic case of the capitalistic spirit of “finding a need and filling it,” and you can see the resulting joy on the faces of his fellow soldiers.
Photo # 24 shows some soldiers who have gathered their loot and have now arrived at the bunker of Elena and her nurses to exchange their loot for sex. You can see the enthusiasm with which they “rush the bunker.”
In photo # 26 we see some of the “value-added” loot brought to Elena. She was able to use these horses to establish a new line of erotic services for soldiers who prefer a little kinkiness in their lovemaking.
In photo # 28 we see two of Maksim’s partners pointing on the globe to Mexico and joking “if only Trotsky could see us now.”
Photo # 30 shows one of the nurses, exhausted from a hard day at “work,” dreaming of investing her money after the war in a small but exclusive dress shop in Vienna, where she could attend the opera in the evening and never again have to see a tractor factory or collective wheat farm.
Photo # 31 shows yet another group of soldiers heading to Elena’s bunker, daring anyone to get in the way of their hard-earned sexual satisfaction.
Some soldiers learned of the new loot-for-sex policy the hard way. In photo # 33 we see some female soldiers who have been approached by males who claim they are not aware of such a policy, and have no loot to trade, but insist on sex anyway. The men appealed to the women’s sense of patriotic duty, and here you can see the response.
Photo # 34 shows some soldiers conducting a map check, trying to locate Elena’s bunker.
Photo # 36—this valiant hero just emerged from his first trip inside Elena’s bunker.
Photo # 37—yet another group of soldiers who saved up their loot for a long time and, once inside Elena’s bunker, not understanding the wisdom of moderation, went crazy until exhaustion.
Some questions have been asked about the soldier in photo # 58. Sadly, this is a soldier who was not able to obtain loot OR a pair of specially designed boots. So here, out of sexual frustration, desperation, and a realization that he is not mentally equipped to survive in a capitalistic market, he is clearly trying to hang himself, with about as much intelligence as he applied to his other endeavors.
Photo # 60—business became so good at Elena’s bunker that she had to employ people to direct traffic and parking.
In photo # 62 we see a former member of Vadim’s navy crew. Now that he has been transferred to the tight confines of a submarine, surrounded by so many musky men, he can no longer suppress him homosexual desires. Here we see him receiving flowers from crewmates, in appreciation for his service as a “special morale officer” during their latest cruise.
In photo # 73 we see the new entrance to Elena’s bunker, which has moved further into Germany, and now welcomes Allied soldiers from America.
In photo # 74 we see the first of what would become many Germans who decided, “if you can’t beat them, join them,” and approached Elena and Maksim under a flag of truce and traded such things as family heirlooms, Krupp steel kitchen utensils, and photos of Hitler having sex with Goering and Himmler.
After Elena moved into Germany and opened her “bunker” to Americans, she met Bill, who was in charge of the US information agency in postwar Germany. When they realized they were made for each other, they married and went to the US, where Bill owned a Manhattan marketing and advertising firm, and Elena opened a high-end New York City “model” agency.
Maksim’s troops led Soviet forces deeper into Europe than anyone imagined, surprising even Joe Stalin. Knowing Uncle Joe’s proclivity to exile or murder anyone who showed too much competence, Maksim occasionally staged “mistakes” to make himself look foolish, and refused promotion.
Meanwhile, he cornered the black market in all Soviet-occupied territories, and used his financial success to secure good relations with certain members members of the Presidium. He later invested a great deal in the education of his young nephew Vladimir. Maksim used his influence to get Vlad accepted into the KGB and posted to Germany, where the overlap of secret intelligence and black market trading ensured a great future for both of them, especially in post-Cold War Russia.
I know you have probably never heard this story. That is because the Soviets never wanted anyone to know that it was the spirit of capitalism, not communism, which led to their victorious advance into Europe. This deal came to be known among the few intelligence agencies who knew about it as “The Booty File,” since the entire episode began when a pretty young nurse and a randy soldier struck a deal to trade booty for booty.”

MaxD, I didn’t expect any better of you. You fucking morone. Those German war prisoners who died after Stalingrad died because they had been starved for 3 months pre capture.
And the Germans killed 3,6 million Soviet POW’s, you little shit. Is that a small amount to you?
Now I’m sure you aren’t a Russian, but some random fuckwhit.
I find it interesting that while studying color photography at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed in the 60’s we used text books from the forties that were classified materials during WWII. They still had the classification stamped across the top. I thought it funny at the time they would classify something like color processing and now I find it even funnier seeing the Russians already had it and with equal or perhaps better quality.
some of these might be taken with color film, but most of them look like colorized B&W photos. Ones that look like they were taken with color film would be: the second one, the third one, the one with the guy wearing the really big boots, the one that is just the tank turret all shot up, and the one with the two soldiers on the bridge with the American and Soviet flag visible…
the rest of them, the colors are too solid and absolute… also there is little variation in colors that would correspond with variations in light, shadows….
colorization of photos is almost as old as photography itself. Even the movie Hell’s Angels has scenes that were hand-colorized… and that movie is sold old that when they started filming it, it was supposed to be a silent picture.
Don’t get me wrong, these are still fantastic photos… but they were not taken with color film.
Why are you insulting me ? Act with decency and class and you will be treated likewise by people.
I was not aware of those figures, now I am.
On a side note, many German POW were used to rebuild Russia after the war. Here in Dolgoprudny there is one sturdy building standing out between the crumbling old blocks en the new apartment buildings. Build by German POW and quality wise far better than the stuff build around it. So something positive after all !:)
This was a response to ‘x’.
nice piece of photographs, i like them………..
these are great…thank you for sharing. this website is truly my very favorite <3
Looking at these color pics reminds me that we’re all human.
Especially the pic below of the captured Germans:

DEATH to the scum that brought war to these people, both sides, turning many of them into monsters.
One good story I know of is about my Russian friend’s grandfather that survived the war in a German POW camp run by Christians. He became a Christian there and upon return to the USSR was promptly sent to Siberia for having been captured by the Germans. After he was let out he spent a further 30 years in Soviet work camps for being a Christian pastor. He kept in touch with his former captors (not sure that helped with the Soviet authorities) and met up with them in Berlin after the wall came down. These German friends wrote a biography of his life, would be an interesting read.
We should all get together and have a group hug, why all the hate?
Splendid soldiers, who contributed to the defeat of Nazism.
Still Germans were real warriors too.
I can’t help feeling sadness remembering that war between two great peoples, maybe the greatest on the planet (both Germans and Russians), it was an European Civil War.
The Japanese were great too, but had to be defeated.
All this is History now, we should forget our quarrels and all , Americans, Europeans, Russians, Japanese,Israelians unite in front of the Islamist threat , today’s challenge.
MIR, DRUZHBA (Peace & Friendship)
Long live the Glorious Red Army (and the White Russians too!)
Amen. Anti-semitism and anti-Christianity are growing, and Islam is on the march. If we don’t stand together against them, they will destroy or at least dominate us all. That is their goal, and anyone who doesn’t believe it simply has not been listening and watching, and has not studied the military strategies of Islam from the time Mohammad roared out of the desert of Arabia until the siege of Venice.
Unfortunately, their masterful mix of propaganda, oil money, and intimidation (see the change of government in Spain in 2004) are working very well.
I spent a year in the Soviet Union as an exchange student, from 1986-1987, and I enjoyed myself very much. I was glad to get back to America, because I missed my home, but I came to enjoy my time spent with the Russian people.
As an amateur historian and military modeller, I very much appreciate these photos being posted. What a wonderful archive.
Thank you, people of Russia, for your sacrifice in World War II, and for helping to rid the world of Hitler and Nazism.
Indeed, not only anti-Semitism is on the rise, but also anti-Islam. I am Muslim and I don’t have any interest in dominating you guys, thank you.

Kindly answer me one single question:

Wonder how many of those German soldiers died at the hands of the brutal communist POW regime?..Huge mistake letting Stalin have so much power.
Very good photos! I’m glad you shared them with the world.
They remind me much of LIFE magazine’s photography from that era. Troops posing with their weapons, nurses giving checkups, prisoners under capture, sailors smiling, etc.
Editors would never allow showing the real brutality of war in those times. They only wanted to show success. The enemy in ruins. Cities being freed. People having plenty. It was like that whether you were American or Soviet.
Wonderful photos, though. A rare treat to see some of the film-work from the Soviet side. Na Zdorovje!

Oh~~NIce Picture….Good
Most of these photos are painted ones, meaning made in black and white and later painted with some inks.
That’s just…ahh….
Thank you for the photos. Colorizing made them seem contemporary in a way I didn’t expect. My dad fought in New Guinea and Guadalcanal, btw.
I’m really enjoying the English Russia site.
Those are fantastic photos, almost surreal.
Thank you for posting them.
Ok jugak gambar2 tu. Mengingatkan aku zaman citer Combat.
I think the soviets had an idilical world. It’s reason than they scape from Russia and East Europe to West trougth ’50s; ’60s;’70s… till 1991.
Germans stay in their land when Hitler rule them.
And now, russians change rich burocrats for the maffia.
And russians women chat to hook extrangers for married and fleed to the “paradise”.
What a country! Better you should surrendered to germans!!!!
God bless the Russian people and other members of the former Soviet Union. During WWII they showed bravery and toughness while enduring great hardship. Truly a great people.
The man inside the frist photo, seems to be a black men. Somebody may indicate me, if have been black soldiers in Soviet army during WWII? If not what is the origin of this extrage photography?
There is no blacks at the first photo.

Mine grandfather died defending Krym. Other one has been injured at Praga. And my grandmother was a front nurse! There is no one Soviet family which haven’t lost someone at WW2. Russian lands are still full of WW2 bombs, destroyed tanks, aircrafts, guns and dead soldiers. Diggers still find them…

Wow, amazing. The collor fotgraphs really makes it sink in, dosent it. U must have worked hard to make this collection, and comments. Really f#¤%& me up. It becomes so close somehow.Should have been a book.
Unfortunately I see some people use pictures like this to fuel their own patrionism. I am sure that was not your point.
WW2 was an example of how cruel humanity can get. Since history is written by the viktorius we often forget that cruelty was commited by everyone.
Studies show that when exposed to war, over a certain time, all humans become brutalized, and by that I mean indifferent to others suffering. It dosent matter where u are from, its a psykic survival mechanism.
As for the regimes, its important to be able to difirentiate betwen the individual soldiers and the leaders their fighing for. Not unlike today (probably more so) the soldiers fought, I dont like saying for their country, but to protect their loved ones, having no clue about politics or idealism. And remember that even the attackers belived this (That they were protecting their loved ones). Some commited emensly cruel things, others where true humanitaies. But this was not because of where they came from! But because of indoktrination, brutalisation and konstant propaganda telling them they where the best.
Im blabbering, (Im a teacher), but please lets stop this blaming, and “we were the best” stuff. That is not what WW2 teaches us. If anything WW2 teaches us that monsters come in any shapes, and that “We are the good ones” are their favorite slogan.
So lets debate ww2 without that kind of nasionalism, and honor the people the people who died and fought to show us that war is the trigger for humanitys latent dark side, and make it our goal to make sure it never happens again.
Anyway,if anyone know more about the 45 Russia-Manchuria campaign i would love some info as it hard to come by.
