    2. Anyone got a translation on the graffiti?

    3. hurg says:

Anyone else think that Russia’s military looks like half assed American militias? I mean christ, they look so unprofessional, out of shape, and under funded.

      • vranyo says:

        Those are Ossetians

      • No, more like escaped convicts. Which is not that far from truth, anyway.

      • Domo says:

If you really think Russian military is unprofessional, especially in this case in S.Ossetia, then you’ve got to think again. Believe me.
And, just to convince you, I’ll let you count the arms and machinery shipped to Georgia by NATO in the few previous years, and then carefully find out what happened with all that stuff in the few (2, actually) days of the liberation.

Also, talking about unprofessional army, I don’t advise you to get the impression about “professional army” from Hollywood movies! ;) Just go to the war and see for yourself.

        • I must agree. “Professional” depends on the standards set by the organization. If proper wear of uniform and equipment is the standard, then maybe the Russians don’t make it. If kicking ass is the standard, I’d say they are doing pretty well.

          • Zafarad says:

            You are quit right,if the uniforms and mirror like shaved faces are standard,Iraqis and Afghans are lacking so much.over 7000 U ASS highly standardized and high tech soldiers died due to “malaria” in Iraq and Afghanistan! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !Will is the power,not weapons . . . . . . . . . .

Thats why russia lodged a protest to Isreal for suppyling antitank rockets that ripped a new asshole in Russian T-80s.

Their Air Defense missiles shot down eight Russian planes

    6. [...] Russia goes to WAR…. Some more pics of the destruction Here. Generally worksafe but there is a gruesome picture of the remains of one of the tank crews in one [...]

    7. Tarmo says:

What a mess… Yes it was a mistake for Georgia to try to take South Ossetia. but… the russians are encouraging a scorched earth policy now by destroying everything within their sights. The Russians look underfunded and unprofessional. This is their big statement to the world? Impressive. Tubli Boiss. These half assed cowboys would be cleaned up by NATO in 30 minutes… Hopefully

      • Bow says:

So, think a little. Hard conditions are usual for them. Their spartan lifestyle makes them twice more sturdy than any NATO soldier. They are warriors who fight or die.

    8. okoch says:

the tank graffiti says east and chechnya all over it

    9. It’s about veteran status of soldiers.
Mainly: “Chechenya”. “East of Chechenya”, “(Veterans) of Yamadan”.

      • R says:

It actually means “Battalion East” and “Yamadayevtsy” (the men of Yamadayev). They are not Russian soldiers, they’re Chechen mercs and former rebels.

        • Alex says:

Chechens are Russians too, just like Ossetians, Ingish, tatars, Ukrainians, Georgians, etc :)

Or, if you prefer, they are “checheno-russians”.

And “Vostok” is a regular military, not “mercs”.

    10. Fat Bastard says:

Why was this war started anyway?

    11. Keroro says:

      uhh:
you mean, on BMP? IMHO it was Chechen army (which on Russian side now).
      ===
      ===

      Fat Bastard:
because part of the georgia wanted to be independed country, and for georgian president it was like pain in ass.

    12. Funny how these images, or in fact any images of Ossetia in ruins after Georgian onslaught together with genocide of 2000 civilians, didn’t even ones appear on the front pages of the western media… or rather they did, but under a slightly different headline:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVNblG9PJMk

      Oh yes… :)

    13. Where are the 2,000 dead Russians claim? You know, the ones killed by the Georgians?

Ямадаевцы? Yamadaevtsy? The graffiti on the APC side, I mean? Soldiers of Yamadaev, the rogue Chechen military commander? I didn’t know Russia used mercenaries in that conflict.

    14. and people thought american wars were mean, russians are animals. Atleast americans clean up afterwards

12 Year Old Girl Tells the Truth on Fox News about Georgia. Fox News even had to cut them off right in the middle of the account of Georgian aggression even though they had just come from a commercial break 2 minutes prior to that. Fucking Fox News and corporate media do not want the truth out.

    17. The Siberian says:

What a mess… Yes it was a mistake for Georgia to try to take South
      …………………..
The Georgian armies have been equipped and trained by the USA and Israel, but have been broken for two days. You still hope?

    18. I think the only reason the US is taking Georgia’s side in this is because they want to get Georgia’s support back for the war in Iraq. Which is stupid. If Russia had backed us more than Georgia had in the “War on Terror”, Bush would be siding with Russia and S.Ossetia. Politics just gets more stupid the higher up it is.

Other that the Iraq War, I see no reason for the US to be helping Georgia. Georgia started this fight, lied, intentionally hurt civilians. But Russia stepped in and helped S.Ossetia, who want idependance or at least to join up with Russia and N.Ossetia anyway….

    19. zcgt21 says:

      Que fotografias tan impresionantes.

    20. What continually strikes home for me is the wanton destruction visited upon the very weakest.
I mean, for instance, why does an army have to destroy:

      An old woman’s home
      A furniture store
      An electronics store
An old man’s three wheeled cart (probably all he has in the world)

I can easily understand the burned out tanks and military equipment, the dead soldier’s bodies, but the wanton killing of old folks and the destruction of the poor? Who does this benefit and what does it prove?
It’s the same thing that makes my blood boil when I see pictures of OUR OWN involvement (and others) in IRAQ…

LEAVE THE OLD, YOUNG AND INNOCENT out of it and just fight the soldiers. Unless an old woman is holding an RPG or housing enemy troops she is no threat.

      • bowl says:

Actually, i think you’ll find that’s because SOLDIERS MOVE and your aim isn’t good enough to hit your target 99.9% of the time. It’s not wanton, it’s accidental often. Also, what if there was a crowd of enemy soldiers outside an old womans flat, and they just popped a tank shell off to conserve valuable ammuntion? oldwoman + house disappeared.

        think before you speak

      • Exactly. And those people bitch about American precision munitions in Iraq not hitting their targets 100% of the time…

      • They have to cover up their looting, you know…

      • And those people bitch about American precision munitions not hitting their targets 100% of the time? Some people got nerve…

    22. Robert says:

Why do so many in the USA (including President Bush) think an independent & muslim Kosovo is fine, but Ossetia must be kept under Georgian rule?

Many people, and most politicians, here in America automatically take an anti-Russian stand, even if it means supporting terrorists like the Chechnyans & anti-western jihad. Stupid. But Russia needs to stop selling arms to Iran & we need to stop supporting Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, etc. etc.

Russia and the USA should be working together against the spread of Islamic violence. We have much in common…like being civilized people.

      • Hans says:

one main reason is demographics. Ossetians over 60% vs. Kosovian over 90%. there are others as well .. dig deeper!
        :)

        • Hervé says:

          Ossetians are more 60%.
Serbs were more than 30% in Kosovo _before_ NATO started bombing Serbia and Serbs from Kosovo fled to Serbia.

          Dig deeper yourself.

          • hans says:

            Fair Enough.

81 point something, … nevertheless over 90 when they got independent. …..

Independence for Chechnya!! -Thts a better comparison to ossetia!

            :D

        • Tib says:

Kosovian are over 90% only since NATO bombed Serbia. But discussing demographics is pointless, it’s the wishes of people who live there that must count. These people have been struggling for almost 20 years to separate from Georgia, declaring that they wanted independence just when the USSR collapsed. They are still struggling, because we, the West, just believe we can decide who deserves independence and who does not, backing this with dumb arguments such as demographics and percentages, and making fun of what the people want.

      • Premas says:

Stupid, what you see on those pictures - ruined houses, etc. - is aftermath of Georgian shelling of South Ossetian capital on August 6. This is why the whole thing started. What you see on those pictures is troops entering the city ruined by Georgian army. Georgian army used MRLs. Multiple rocket launchers are not exactly precise weapon - they destroy everything in a big area. Many people in military outfit you see on those pics are not regular troops - they are paramilitary - i.e. ordinary Ossetian men who took arms to protect their land. You can distinguish them by white arm-bands and often sport shoes.

      • Swede says:

        All _three_ sides are disgrace.

Russia has strong political interest in S-O for it to be part of Russia or a russian friendly new Ossetia. Therefore they shouldn’t be “peace keeping” in this area.

As for the subject, great pictures. This war is sad. What do the Ossetians want themselves ? That’s what matters.
These geo-political acts create dis balance resulting in problems. The old us-against-them kicking in again. No one will win.

Saakasvili is an idiot, he probably thought the US and the EU would come to his aid straight away because their oil/gas supply is currently running over Georgian territory, this in order to be less vulnerable and dependent on Russia’s energy policy. Fortunately they kept at a distance. No-one needs more problems or a second cold war. This short term thinking is causing non-stop problems in Eastern Europe. Fools.

gah The whole thing is a mess, satellite states like Georgia should follow their instructions, not go off half cocked and try to wipe out their enemies before anyone notices. Yes they brought it on themselves, and yes they were the aggressors, THIS TIME. However if Russia was suppose to keep the peace why did they let South ossetian bandits fire rockets at the Georgian bases? And why give Russian passports to non-Russian citizens? The whole thing reminds me of the Sudetenland and Germany’s thin excuses for annexing their neighbors.
Russia will be looked out of the Financial markets, and it’s the common people that will suffer as usual, all the while cheering those that made them starve.

BTW this series is not complete, there are 89 pictures in total but the most graphic ones have been left out.

      Why ?

Those pictures might make people realize that war is not a video game but human brutality and harshness at its worst. And not something to be proud of or to pursue.
Stop this nationalist bull shit !!

One russian idiot i.e. proclaimed in a forum that in times of war one should not be critical to ones own country [he meant Russia] because that would be high treason and you would be a traitor, backstabbing great Mother Russia.
This idiotic remarks point out the silly way many people think. Like, in WWII germans should not have been critical about Hitler ? Thank God some were !! And Stalin ? Some ‘critisiscm’ would have helped 1000s, if not millions to stay alive. Etc…

The average person does NOT realize that in most instances their government DOES NOT GIVE A SHIT about them, they are mere instruments, tools to be used for the governments’ geo political power games. Always be critical !!! Don’t be a sheep !

In particular Russia and I guess the US too, they think they can get away with anything, appealing to nationalist sentiments while in fact it is all about power and money. Who’s headbutting the missiles in the end ? Right. Not Bush or Putin, but some poor underpaid asshole. Quite often a civilian, even.

The lives of your Soldiers and your Sons is more worth and important than these pair of gypsies.
      God bless you.

    41. Tib says:

What is clear here is that the Georgian president tried to fool Russia, simultaneously leading peace discussions and preparing his attack of South Ossetia. Saakashvili just thought that, as he has a foot in NATO, he’s allowed to do just what he wants and kill peacekeeping soldiers mandated by the UN.

It was a wise European move to prevent Georgia from stepping fully into NATO this spring. In this war, the only obvious thing is that Saakashvili is just another American puppet, and that the US just want to make Georgia one more Nicaragua/Panama/call it as you want.

Saakashvili has nothing in common with European values, although he puts the EU flag for each one of his declarations. He’s only interested by power and has seen the US collaboration as a means to maintain his power.

Russians are fully right to destroy all the equipment of the Georgian army. Just ask yourself, what it would have been within 5-10 years more of NATO providing weapons to Georgia? No doubt that Saakashvili does not give a f… about civilian casualties, and he would just have made the same with a much higher death toll within 5 years, had he been smart enough to wait. But by chance, he’s dumb enough to think he can do anything and that we’ll back him. Now his retirement (or death) would be a big relief for all the world.

At last, it’s completely crazy how politics just do not mind what the Ossetian (and Abkhazian) PEOPLE want. Fortunately today the secretary of the OSCE said that Ossetian should have their word to say about their future. I think it’s the first ever Western politic to say this, which shows how partial our countries can be. Please think about it, you fellow readers from the US and Europe. And I hope this will also show to the Russians that not all Europeans and Americans think alike…

Trust me, having your country be “great” doesn’t make day-to-day life that much better, the Danes have a tiny, lame country, and they are amongst the happiest people on Earth.

I do agree, excellent and pragmatic comment.

All this talk about prestige, greatness and whatnot, is just abstract bla-bla which has no effect on the everyday life of the majority of people, except when the bombs come down.

Like I wrote before, the governments are in a very populistic way appealing to nationalist sentiments to authorize/legalize their actions.

And they know they can get away with virtually anything, in particular in E-Europe/Russia, where people are not used to raise their [individual] voice in protest against their government, or to be critical individuals. If you are not with us you are against us, this idea is still very present in many peoples brain. Planted there by the state.

The ’state’ : a superstructure, untouchable, looming over them like a thundercloud, controlling and manipulating its citizens, instead of being a service provider representing them, like in W.Europe.

But maybe this will change, like in China, where remarkable things are taking place. And this medieval relying on traditions and national and ethnical identity will be replaced by personal identity and achievements.

Instead of focusing on what sets us apart it’s more productive to focus on what unites us, in the end.

      • Boy says:

        Fuck you asshole!

      • “If you are not with us you are against us” - isn’t that what George W. Bush of the USA said when he rallied up allies for his administration’s catastrophic wars?

Your prejudices about Eastern Europe are quite amusing, all over these comment boards. Please continue to delight us so.

“If you are not with us you are against us” - isn’t that what George W. Bush of the USA said when he rallied up allies for his administration’s catastrophic wars?

So ? He did not invent this quote. AFAIK it was Joseph Goebbels in the ’30s who used this phrase in this context the first time.

Read the Russian forums. This is the average patriotic idea in Russia, and this is the general idea that is broadcasted on the TV channels. Everyone is against Russia [as usual] so Russians, unite !! There is a great feeling of togetherness in the country at this moment. Too bad it took a war to accomplish this, and too bad it will not last. Also too bad it is put in peoples heads by untrustworthy idiots, who will say anything to get what they want. Step outside of Russia for some time and your eyes will open. Be an individual, not a parrot. The average Russian is a parrot, but cannot be blamed for that - he is brought up this way and so were his parents and grandparents.

Another nice one, just saw it yesterday: this whole thing is staged to get John McCain elected and kick Obama from his leading spot [him being the less war-minded of the two] Conspiracy theoies are one of the top hobbies amongst Russians. Together with discussing politics endlessly

If George Bush says something it doesn’t mean that a similar feeling

          • I wouldn’t assume that everyone in Russia thinks like in “the Russian forums”. I follow a lot of Russian LiveJournals, and somehow I get a more varied picture than that. Maybe forums and blogs attract different kinds of people.

            • maxD says:

Another excellent one : the russian looters seen on several movies and pictures [like youtube and CNN] are not russians, according to the official statements.

They are Georgians, dressed up as Russians, stealing their own stuff [in Russian controlled territory, filling up Russian trucks with Russian licenseplates] to mislead the Western [read: american] press into believing Russians are looting and therefore bad people.

The amazing thing is many people actually believe this.

          • Bullshit. Goebbels has nothing to do with the quote - AFAIK, it first surfaced in Bob Mayakovski’s lame attempts at poetry back in 1927:

и тот, кто сегодня поет не с нами,
            тот — против нас.

Naturally, I am not sufficiently naive to give ol’ Bob original credit for the line, but it suggests that it was already in use at the time when Goebbels was nothing more than two-bit bank teller.

…in fact, one can argue that it traces all the way back to the world’s greatest propaganda effort (1 Samuel 29:4).

    53. These photographs (except the last) were actually made by Arkady Babchenko (the guy who wrote “A Soldier’s War in Chechnya” - he was a soldier in both Chechnyan wars, first at 18 years as an untrained conscript, then as a volunteer regular - later he became a journalist). That’s him in the last photo.

Ilya Plekhanov, who is quoted by EnglishRussia as the author, only published the photos on the Iskusstvo Voiny website. I guess the EnglishRussia crew can’t read Russian? :o/

Finally the Russian officials admitted that they were exaggerating: only 133 people were killed by the Georgians [mostly in battle], not 2000+ [no genocide therefore].
But they achieved their goal: the average Russian who watched the news channels will carry the idea of Georgians-commiting-genocide in his head till he dies. And tell it to his neighbors and his children, too.
Thats how you achieve indoctrination: build on people’s inbuild paranoia, fears and distrust of everything outside their circle and when their support is needed [i.e. for supporting geo political actions or smt similar], they are easy to trigger.

      Happens all over the world.

America is fearing Russia’s great upcomming since the fall of the communism ,looking forward to the economical Russia-China pact and the nuclear pact between Russia and Iran, by 2012 Russia will be,again, the most powerfull country in the world and that is what America wants to avoid (any means necessary, including WAR). Like Putin once said ” You’re with us or against us, no in between “.

…or maybe they are Georgians dressed like Russians pretending to be Georgians so that everyone would think that they are Russians.

You realize how ridiculous you sound, right?

    75. Georgians Did Not Start the War: The Russians Did! And the Russians Did it Because Russia is Very Sick Today With Xenophobia and Nostalgia for the Soviet Empire!

Since beginning of August 2008, the Russian “Peacekeepers” together with Ossetian illegal militia have been ethnically cleansing Georgian villages and killing innocent civilians! Just think about this…

Many experts and diplomats wondered whether the Russian government is sick with xenophobia and with the nostalgia of “good, old Soviet Union” is trying to revive the forgotten empire. Or maybe they are just playing a very stupid game that will have extremely severe consequences to the future of Russia and its citizens.

It is not a new fact that the people from Caucasus republics are constantly being discriminated in Russia, are targets of Russian neo-Nazi groups and live second class citizens lives. The Russian government never tried to understand the mentality, culture and social norms of the people from the Caucasus region. Throughout history the Russian empire or the Soviets or Putin’s regime have been applying one rule to the Caucasus region in order to maintain control over it: divide and conquer! Putin successfully fueled ethnic tensions between various Caucasus nationalities, so they all had to look up to the Russians for help and the roots of this policy date back to Tsar’s Russian Empire, when the Russians were only able to take control over Caucasus with the help of Caucasus nations, primarily the Georgians. The Georgians thought they were doing a favor and Tsar would leave them alone to govern their own lives, but the Georgians were wrong.

After the collapse of Soviet Union the Russian government successfully fueled ethnic tensions between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, Georgians and Ossetians, Georgians and Abkhazians, Ingushis and Ossetians, etc… This was the only strategy and the only game the Russian rulers played by: fuel hatred, divide the territories, resettle and arm the people so there will be no peace until the Russian soldier places his foot in the region. And of course, the Russian army is known for their outstanding performance in “peacekeeping” missions that have carried out, being involved in genocide, ethnic cleansing (Georgians in Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Chechen civilians), rape, murder, torture and the list goes on. At the end it seems that the Russian “peacekeeping mission” is not that peaceful at all.

It is evident that the Russian political system always been in shape of a Pyramid, where all the political and economic control spheres of country is divided between a leader (Czar, or Secretary General or Prime Minister) at the top, who has a direct control and right hand support of secret service at one angle and military at the other. This is the heart of the Russian political life and everything else develops around it. With a strong propaganda machine, complete control over Russian citizens is assured, as well as “democratic” elections where one candidate always receives the vast majority (if not all) of the votes and there never seems to be opposition to the candidate. And what about the President Medvedev? He is just another toy in Putin’s closet…

Putin decided to send a strong signal to the world and wished to overthrow the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, but he failed. He strongly believes that the fate of the Georgian people depends on his wishes and is determine to shape the borders of another sovereign country. This move directly threatens the World Order established after World War II. The current World Order is not perfect, but so far, with its deficiencies it is working.

After the brief war with Georgia, the Russian government tried to justify its move by saying that the Georgians started the war. Here is the first lie! The Georgian government has been saying since beginning of August 2008 that the situation in South Ossetia is escalating and the Russian “peacekeepers” are staging provocations together with illegal armed forces of South Ossetian separatist regime. They started killing Georgian police officers and firing artillery shells at the Georgian villages located in South Ossetia, but the world was preoccupied with getting ready for the opening ceremony of Beijing 2008 Olympics.

When the Georgian government officials told the Europeans in Brussels that we were at the brink of war, the Europeans politely warned the Georgians not to use the word “war” in the city of Brussels, because they do not like the word “war.” It seems that old Europe is getting older each day and with the age, because numerous warnings and cries by the Georgian officials fell on the deaf ears of old Europe. Never mind the fact that it took Hitler conquering Poland and Czechoslovakia, before the Western Europe realized this was a war.

And what about the Americans? The American society is in the midst of elections, the Democrats want to see Europe take more responsibility for security in Caucasus region, the Republicans are divided and worried about gay marriage and abortion rights… The friends of Georgia in new Europe are trying everything to force the old Europe take harsher approach towards Russia, but Europe is dependent on Russian natural gas and oil.
Giving up on a young democracy does not seem plausible for the Europeans, but the old Europe is scared of the new Russian bear. The new Russia is controlled by a xenophobic psychopath who has decided to break all the rules of the game, in order to change those rules. And the question comes: how can you stop a bully? Everyone can keep condemning the Russian government, but that paper will wind up in Putin’s toilet again… The only way to stop a bully is bully up against the bully – simple rule of life.

With the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the Russian government has proven the world that they will violate international laws whenever they feel like it and they will use aggression in the name of peace as they did in Prague 1968. If the world would not stand up for Georgia, who will be the next prey of the hungry Russian bear? Maybe Ukraine? Or Moldova? Or who knows… The Russian government is as unpredictable as the weather in England…

The Georgian people are united and stand united, we have survived the onslaught by Mongols, Persians, Arabs, Turk-Seljuks throughout the history and we have still survived and we are not scared of the Russian bear either.

Just last question to Mr. Putin. Mr. Putin, if you are so concerned about the freedom of small minorities, why not recognize the independence of Chechnya? Then Daghestan? Then Ingushetia? And then all the other autonomous republics where the citizens do not even speak Russian? Think about that at first and then lets discuss the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, after 300,000 Georgian refugees return to their own homes.
And to my fellow Abkhazian and South Ossetian brothers and sisters. Yes, there will be dancing and celebration in Sokhumi and Tskinvali. Yes, you will be smiling and waving flags - Georgian flags of course….

“Great powers” talk: Saddam’s army had some 375,000 regular soldiers (not to mention the militias) and was completely destroyed in 3 weeks and the multi-million city of Baghdad fell in about 3 days.

For a comparison Chechen separatist forces had only few thousand men in semi-regular forces, but it took Russia about HALF YEAR to get control of this tiny territory in 1999-2000 (and besieged Grozny for more about 3 months) - not to even mention losing the first war before that.
