Up-Side-Down Plates

Ukrainian car plates 1

Some bloggers report that there is now a new way to express their disagreement with road police has been spotted in Ukraine. When a driver doesn’t agree with some speeding tickets or other penalties from the road police he turns his plates up-side-down to show his disregard for police. Actually in Ukraine it has not been clearly stated in the traffic laws how the car plate should be mounted, so they cannot be penalized for this.

typically you do not get a traffic violation ticket in former soviet union. all you do is bribe the cop and you are free to go.

Good idea but it won’t foil photo radar…

Don’t blame the traffic police if you suck at driving.

It’s also possible that there are some overzealous cops. I know there are plenty of them where I live (I got pulled over and ticketed once for not having a front license plate when Illinois law states that i only have to have a rear one, and on another occasion a cop gave me a ticket at five in the morning for not having an up-to-date village sticker).

        • Ralph says:

Usually this happens when a cop has to “show service”, meaning it’s getting close to the end of his shift and he has to prove somehow that he actually did some work.

          • Bremm says:

This “show service” thingy is also noted in South America — maybe except Chile.

Once in St. Petersburg I saw a big truck performing a u-turn when the driver pointed a blitz. Of course there was room enough to do that (most streets there have at least four lanes).

Who would you blame when you get fined for not having condoms in your first aid kit? Russian hookers?

    7. Ag says:

From Latvia I know that plates startin with AA are the police or government

    8. Boris says:

So what? I’ve seen many cars in Russia driving without any kind of license plate, not even a temporary one.

    9. I lost my license plates from my toxic waste truck

    10. this one is from Dnepropetrovsk…my birthplace.
DP has AA on the license plate.
