New Island in Russia

New Island in Russia near Sochi 1

It seems like Russia (which is the biggest country in the world) tries to compete with Dubai (United Arab Emirates) in unique construction projects. Before the building of artificial skiing resort had been finished (the similar one stands in UAE), Russian government has presented to the public the model of artificial island that will be raised from the Black Sea waters near Sochi coast in 2014, towards the opening of the Olympic Games. It is no no wonder that the island will be called “The Federation” - its shape will resemble the whole country in miniature.

    5. What a truly amazing project! Anyone know what the budget for this is?

    6. Jerry says:

WTF? They’re going to FILL IN the BLACK SEA?????

    7. Assholes! Sons of bitches! Motherfucking dipshits! The land that you are expropriating (i.e., stealing) from the Sochi residents is not enough for you, fatherfucking faggots? When all that shit is going to get crammed down your throats, I wonder?

…sorry. The above diatribe was directed at the Russian kleptocracy. Not that they don’t deserve it.

      • Sochi says:

Would you like kill your self UPSTENU, please!

      • Sochi says:

Would you like UBITI your self UPSTENU, please!

      • I really cannot understand why you are so negative about this project. Surly this will greatly benefit Sochi’s economy, create jobs for the locals, attracts foreign tourism, investment, etc, etc. Please explain your
position Mr. Bustard. Otherwise some people might be in danger of assuming that you do generally hate russia. And all positive change in that country anger you, because you only want bad things to happen to it…… Surly not!

        • Well, first off, “bustard” is a bird. “Bastard” is what I am. May I suggest that you pay close attention to your spelling, so that you wouldn’t make yourself look like a “burrow” (In a seminal comment by a scientific writing teacher: “Burro is an ass. Burrow is a hole in the ground. One really should know the difference.”)

This out of the way, let me state why this idea blows dead bears. First, it is my parents’ tax money that is going to be blown on this project to benefit the (usual) select few. Second, even ignoring this fact, I have a big problem with the whole idea of Olympics in Sochi - or, rather with the way it is being implemented. A special law was passed that allows the government to steal their land from whoever they damn please for whatever purpose (not that they couldn’t do it before, but at least there were some procedural protections). If you think Kelo was a bad decision, it is a lot worse: at least there was some local backlash against the Supremes, whereas Russia is so federalized, it’s fucking scary. It hits me where it hurts, as well - I did inherit some land in Russia, and I would like to keep it, thank you very much.

It doesn’t help that Sochi is one of the few maritime resorts a poor working stiff in Russia (Moscow, naturally, excluded) can afford - now they wouldn’t be able to. Oh-wow, I’d rather fly my folks to Redneck Riviera: at least they wouldn’t have to take Aeroflot there.

On the other hand, this kinda makes twisted sense: the powers that be in Russia are in such a deep shit (state-sponsored nuclear terrorism, no fucking kidding!), that once their terms are up, that’d be the only seaside resort they’d be able to travel to. I do hope to see them on the south coast of the White Sea, rather than the north coast of the Black Sea, but I am not really counting on that…

          • I apologize - of course you are a Bastard.

“A special law was passed that allows the government to steal their land from whoever they damn please for whatever purpose (not that they couldn’t do it before, but at least there were some procedural protections)” - I am sorry, what “Law” are you referring to?

          • D says:

In America, the government is allowed to take any land it pleases at anytime, for any reason. And they give you what “they think” the land is worth at the time. Its been done already…recently fought in the supreme court…and upheld. So Russia is not doing anything that the free and democratic america isnt also doing. Stop complaining. At least you dont live in a third world country….your country at least has the money to build and make this resort town better for many years to come. O and my tax money is funding the war in Iraq right now…not by my choice either.

            • You are referring to Kelo decision I mentioned early (while misunderstanding the reasoning completely). I explained the difference in that same post, and why it is a lot worse in Russia, so shut the fuck up.

And, no, my country does not fund stupid island construction. It funds stupid war in Iraq, which I don’t support either. Difference is, even after paying ridiculously high taxes, I still can make a decent living stateside. On the other hand, in Russia taxes get pissed away on… well, projects like this one, whereas a major trans-siberian highway remains unpaved (see http://englishrussia.com/?p=315). At the cool 6B spent on the toys to benefit the usual few, one can pave at least 1000K of it.

        • And for the record - so that we don’t have any misunderstanding here - I do hate the current variety of the Russian gov’t, no denial about that (then again, the previous ones weren’t much better, either). Just hate that hypocritical pseudopatriotic kleptocracy. As Saltykov-Shchedrin (I think) once commented: “Look, he’s talking about patriotism. Going to steal something, no doubt.” It is sad that nothing has truly changed over the last couple of centuries.

    8. Boris says:

Great, now they’re going to waste money on Sochi in addition to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

    9. mr.fit says:

well, at least it wont have stupid statues all over it like mockba

    10. Richard S. says:

I wanna buy a condo there!

    11. Richard S. says:

      Or even a time share…

    12. I don’t get it. Global warming will flood those islands in our lifetimes, so why build them?

    13. Boris,

If I tell you you have beautiful sexy body, would you hold it against me?

      Yours in Love,

      Pootie Poo

    14. Pros says:

I want an island for prison.
We could put IGOR the BALDY FAG on that island.

    15. Justin says:

Wow! - hhat should certainly put russia back on the map.

      подавился сухой коркой заплесневелого хлеба…
запил ржавой водой и подумал - а где деньги на мой личный островок?

    17. Honestly, i dont think its possible for them to finish that by 2014…

      • D says:

I was thinking the same thing. Especially with all the other projects in the area at the same time. And to maintain it is just as hard as building it. It needs to be dredged all the time for something like this to not get washed away.

      • Yeah it is. Shoddy crash projects is what Russians are best at.

    18. chaosgone says:

      That place looks cool! :)

    19. cynical bastard’s attitude is how americans got the name “Septics” in the first place…. he just opens his mouth and a river of shit flows out

    20. Landtat says:

You’re not a cynical bastard. You’re a well educated uninformed cunt.

    22. Alex says:

      wow cool Idea.

all around world just jealous over that.

i gress USA and Aussie will make new island after 2010 XD

    23. Ah, another Kommersant reader. In the U.S. its called the Law of Iminent Domain. Where the law formerly required such developments to be for public usage (roads, airports etc), the Republicans are pushing state-by-state amendments to allow for comercial developement, ie. you can be forced out to make way for another Wal-Mart.

    24. #11 is a travel poster with no political message. Your comment inserted the nazi salute. Own it.

    25. Own what? The poster? No, thanks. Or did you mean “own up to”? Nothing to own up to, either: I pointed out that the raised hand salute is generally accompanied by “sieg heil”. If you are too thick to distinguish political commentary from… well, anything else, it is not my problem.

    26. No one believes your explanation, but everyone understood your absurd political comentary. The figure in the poster was obviously waveing to the viewer. Further denials and discussion of this issue are not necessary.
