Silent Hill Comes to Leningrad
The broken hot water pipe deep inside the ground makes this part of St. Petersburg look like the scene from the Silent Hill movie. Anyway it seems that this occurrence don’t make people scared. They got used to such troubles.
And there was “Silent Hill” style effect in this city once before. Almost a year ago.

There is a central boiler and it sends the hot water for heating purposes. They used to do this in big cities in america too.

Incidentally, citywide steam heating system is a common occurence in Russia. It does make a modicum of sense (economy of scale and capture of waste heat where available), but, the former is negated by usual construction shoddiness and the latter is not available everywhere.
The concept is kind of interesting. In some business developments in the US, building will use a shared geothermal system for heating. Some housing developments use a shared geothermal system for heating too.
