Travel Ural 2007

These shots were made this summer, on the route of the regional significance that passes between the cities Syktyvkar, Ukhta and Pechora. It’s hard to say much about the condition of the rest of the road, but this especial part the passing by drivers call “the lacet”. And looking at these pictures it is getting clear, that there is nothing strange in such a name, taking into account, that it isn’t off-road driving. Of course there are a lot of paved roads too in Russia, and some are being severely reconstructed in order to improve the road system, but it’s a great pity that such roads still exist.

Wow… that’s amazing.
1st.
SO! Remind me not to take that route.
Wow, what a road
Are you kidding me! I can ride my 10 speed bicycle through that and only peddle with one leg!
George, let me give you anal Putin Pleasure in mud. I want you cowboy. Ride my butt like 4X4!
No, your transvestite mother is NOT at home yet. Still a few clients to serve..
They would be better off driving besides the road.
твари ебаные!!!!!!!бабла с нефти гребут немеряно а дорогу построть не могут!!!!!как на котеджный посёлок в Москве так деньги не проблема а как что-то для простого народа так хуй!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ONLY IN RUSSIA!!!!!!!!
Best on-road off road I’ve ever seen.
That’s construction site.
Anyone wanna bet that a decent road would have paid for itself (in the form of reduced fuel consumption and property damage) in a year?
But it wouldn’t be so exciting!!!!
Тебе шашечки, или ехать? What are you interested in, excitement or actually GETTING there in one piece?
It’s repulsive. The government is wasting money on ‘prestigious’ projects in the 2 big cities, ignoring the rest of the country and it’s infrastructure.
The in-efficiency is awesome. The politicians have short term vision only in Russia.
pity
“but it’s a great pity that such roads still exist” - What? It isn’t a pity, its fucking great! Wish I could take my Jimmy there
Sillies. That road is bad to keep the trojan horses out!

You know what? You may be right, can you imagine what would have happened in WWII if Russia had nice paved roads for the German panzers to run on? It’s called general mud. It glued German tanks and trucks in place, sometimes they had to abandon them. Looks like a pretty good strategic defence to me.
The Chasers are insane. Thanks for the link.
Perhaps the G8 countries should get together and finance and build a two lane paved all weather road all the way to Anadyr.
This kind of infrastructure would create jobs and help bolster Russia’s economy. Something similar to the Trans-Canada Highway.
I also remember reading an article in the Popular Mechanics or Popular Science Magazine about a bridge along the Bering Strait from Alaska to Chutkotka through the Diomede Islands. This was of course 15 years ago. I don’t think I’ll see this in my lifetime.
Why should they bother? Russia has plenty of money from oil revenues; it is not the G8’s problem if money is being misspent (on private planes, to be sure, like A380 http://uk.news.yahoo.com/afp/20070905/ten-russia-aerospace-airbus-fbl-eng-pr-1dc2b55_1.html and toys, like football clubs).
And Bering Strait bridge is probably the stupidest idea out there (in the league with Gravina Island and Knik Arm bridges, only more expensive): why connect one point in the middle of nowhere with another? Neither side of the Strait has a decent road/rail network, for one thing, what are you gonna trade? Whale blubber for vodka? Gimme a break.
You read Popular Mechanics and Science?
Jeez, get a life you sad twat.
Where else could you see all the wonderful things that capitalist industry was going to provide? Everyone would drive helicopters instesd of cars. We would all live in glass houses and push buttons instead of work. Maybe a Bering Strait Bridge would be impractical, but there are worse things to dream about. Now pass the whale blubber please.
I’d like to see socialist industry doing better. So far, the record was far below abysmal: in 50 years Soviet Russia went from major grain exporter to major grain importer.
…bottom line is: conscience and ideology is no match for human ingenuity and greed when it comes to improving the fate of mankind…
Should we not strive for conscience to overcome greed in order to improve the human condition?
Do you really think you should be asking a Republican this question?
Absolutely. There are many people who should ask this of themselves on occasion, including myself.
No, we shouldn’t strive for conscience to overcome greed. Reason is simple (hell, even that old syphilitic Lenin was able to understand that): the latter works (to improve human condition: case in point - more than doubling of human lifespan in the last century, no thanks to assorted commies), the former doesn’t.
And, for the record, I am NOT a republican. I wouldn’t want to be seen around those communists. The only way Republican’ts can ever redeem themselves in my eyes is by nominating Ron Paul.
Wow cynical, this comment is heavy. Heavy like depleted uranium… Hmm…now a question; How is it that greed doubled(doubled now)the human lifespan in the last century(foot notes appreciated)? Next; These days no one admits to being a Repubilican, not even texas1. But surely you mean that you would not “want to be seen around those” fascists (you know the correct spelling and the difference). The Russians are getting bored with all this so I will leave Ron Paul for another day. By the way, how’s your Jimmy running?
Well at least I didn’t say Repuglican.
OK… I am going to explain it in a really simple way: greedy capitalists want to make money. Preferably a lot of it. How do you make money (assuming that we’re not discussing socialism or crony capitalism)? By producing something others are willing to pay for. Following me so far?
Good. Now, accumulation of capital in the hands of a greedy capitalist leads to a couple of phenomena. One, said greedy capitalist seeks other ways to make money (for whatever reason - competition is getting tough, for example). The need to develop new ways to satisfy greed (i.e., produce stuff others need) together with the availability of venture capital leads to some of that capital being spent on research (in the broadest possible sense). Cheaper ways of producing stuff are being developed (Marx had an excellent example involving pins), making it available to more people (heard that Apple slashed iPhone price? Out of the goodness of their heart? Nah, out of greed.); likewise, new technologies emerge as well. Technological progress ultimately lads to progression from the Stone Age to what we have now, and doubling of the lifespan over the last century is the product of technological civilization. Who made such civilization possible? Again, greedy capitalists looking to make a buck. What assorted socialists were doing over the last century? Killing people, it seems: Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao, you name them.
…and, on a side note, if you honestly believe that there is an appreciable difference between Republicrap communists and Demonrat fascists, you are seriously deluded…
“…In 50 years Soviet Russia went from major grain exporter to major grain importer.”
—Part of that was due to Russian government supporting
ДУрак ИДИОТ Russian fake scientist Lysenko.
where is 11;
Whatever happened to FAO?
Fuck you texas1. Stupid sheep fucker
HA HAAAAA Good One!
Now that wasn’t called for. Be nice.
Every sheep in texas has been raped more than once.
We Russians must create a protection fund for texan sheep!!!
I always get stuck in this mud with toxic wastes truck, When im 50km out of Moscow i hit this mud. I normally travel at 200kmh and hit mud and go as far as possible before get stuck, then I will either make my own road thru the bush or drink vodka for few weeks straight until a wake up in a motel in Vladivostok with nuclear truck parked out front. I duno how I get out of mud but when i wake up sober in motel weeks later I know i did good for delivering toxic waste to schools for science experiments.
Good luck to the people who try to make it across in a 2WD car!
I wonder how many seconds some AmeriHick truck would last on a Russian road?
More proof to the superior engineering of Russia, I guess…
Like one of these: http://www.jeepalaska.com/readers.html ? I have a hunch they’d swaller the road whole and leave those KAMAZ rigs in the dust (or mud, as the case might be).
And if Russian engineering is so great, why not bring this road up to at least Trans-Alaska Highway standards?
American trucks are designed for long-distance, high speed, heavy load transport over stable highways. Russian/CIS trucks (such as Kamaz, KrAZ, Ural, etc.) are practically useless in the US. And when you say “superior engineering” do you mean “superior reverse-engineering”?
Given that the Russian 6×6s are more or less direct descendants of Studebaker US6 - reverse engineering at its finest.
And Western trucks (except perhaps for Oshkosh and such) are useless on roads like these. Maybe Russian trucks are extremely low tech and pollute air like hell, but they are sturdy, simple and easy to repair, and I don’t envy you if you’re stuck on a road like this with Mercedes Actros or MAN TG-A, because you can paint it green and leave it in the woods to rust. Maybe that is the reason that Russian cars and trucks were always popular in third world countries. Design, speed and ride comfort may be important in civilized world with dining table-smooth roads and gas station/convenient store/service station every hundred meters, but out in the Siberian wilderness, when you can’t shut down the engine for the night ’cause it won’t start in -50C, and you need to keep going no matter what, or else you freeze to death, none of those qualities matter, What matters is the ability to run in severe weather conditions, on crappy fuel, ability to be repaired only with basic tools like a sledge hammer and a strong Russian swear word.
From my experience, even in the harshest conditions the best performing trucks, are Tatras from Czech Republic (red and green truck on these pictures). They cope with terrain like no other ones… on a construction site I drove Tatra T815 to places, where I wouldn’t take my Land Rover One Ten.
btw: This vid says it all - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ULeIniaVM4
So, the roads in Russia look like most of Arkansas.
For all the skeptics here is a link of that proposed crossing.
The list of economic benefits are endless…

Somebody will make a HUGE omelet… Anyway nice road. They are going to cover it. (Bitum-truck..)
Ooh what a offroaders heaven there.
Putin should take care of his troubles at home before putting his nose in the business of other countries.
Fantastic!!!!
i want to go there. i dont understand however why the truckdrivers with a full roadtrain drives out in the unknown with 2 cars onboard
I do want to go to Russia one day, if/when I have the resources. Not just the cities, either, but kind of roam the countryside, check out the villages, etc.

—And for sure fast way to end up in Soviet sponsored
“hospitality camp” for re-education because you will know too much! (LOL)
What if I stay away from military bases, vodka factories, and Chernobyl?
Cool! Great place for USA monster trucks! Looks fun time to me!
=======================Are you kidding me???=========================================================================================================================================================================================WTF? You can’t use a truck in those roads!!

This would be awesome route for beyond extreme safari. Maybe someone should organize safari on that route for all those extremal driving lovers
You bet.
He is a human being and is “special”.
Pros is a bizarre fuck that likes to talk to himself; much like the unibomber.
You have confused greed with profit. But neither of these terms can define the ascent of human civilization. To do so denies everything that makes us human. Unfortunately this line of thought has been unashamedly elevated to the status of a religion in the U.S. in the last 25 years.
There is a difference between Democratic and Republican parties. Democratic leadership tends to require corporate interests to hold for the common good to at least some degree. The Republican party has held for corporate interests at the expense of the common good.
And who would care about profit if it weren’t for greed? Thought you’d be able to make this connection yourself. And, make it “the last 250 years”, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution - you’re saying that as if it is a bad thing.
As for the differences, yeah, that’s what they say (and that’s what they would like you to think). If you look at the voting record… not so much: corporate interests clamor for universal healthcare and oh-so-common-good-democratic biofuel subsidies go to big agribusiness. And, what, for fuck’s sake, is that “common good” thingie, anyways?
Anyways, I’ll make it simple for you. What is ONE thing socialists developed that is worth implementing? Seems like the only thing they have been producing over the last century is corpses - about 100 million of those.
Profit is to come out with more than you started with. Profit does not neccessarily depend on greed. Greed is to take more than you need or are entitled to often at the expense of others. Greed is considered a vice in all human cultures. Reasonable profit is a result of enterprise and is acceptable in most cultures if not overtaken by greed.
I am sure you won’t agree with any of this but here are things that are not based on profit or greed (therefore socialistic)and have been benefitial to millions of people including you, i.e. the common good.
Labor Unions,
Eight hour workday,
40 hour workweek,
Premium pay for overtime.
Social Security,
Health care,
Equality,
Unemployment insurance,
Postal system,
Interstate highways etc…
Some of the above helped prevent the collapse of capitalism 75 years ago.
All of the above, except for the last two (and equality and perhaps SS as well) - product of greed on part of employees, wanting more “stuff” for same amount of work (misplaced, to be sure: see example of healthcare). See, greed is actually a good thing. SS is an unmitigated (and unmitigable) disaster, so don’t claim it as an achievement. Equality is a perennial hijack subject by the leftoids, even though the idea was around even before the term “left” was coined Postal system was there before Karl Marx (is he related to Groucho or Richard?), and fascists (National SOCIALISTS, to be sure) managed that OK, too, so I guess I’ll grant that. There ARE benefits of socialism, I grant that.
Are benefits balanced by costs? Given that the costs of socialism so far is about 100 million dead - no fucking way in fucking hell. And, incidentally, what’s your personal cutoff? How many deaths would be acceptable to pay for universal health care, for example?
Some of these things are part of the “social contract” that was agreed upon by the people of this country and enacted into law by the government. The reason it came into being was due to the fact that many people worked 70+ hours a week for poverty wages and never enjoyed the benefits of their labor. These laws gave some measure of balance between unrestricted capitalism and the basic social needs of the population. These things are in fact what made the U.S. great. The benefit to the capitalists was that the expanding middle class has driven the economy and provided industrial peace. The goal of the “Reagan Revolution” is to reverse all of this and shift even more wealth to the corporate oligarths. They have succeded in many areas but people are getting wise to the scam.
As for the deaths statistics attributed to either system, Sarah Zaluppa has already adressed this in another post. If I can find it I will provide the link.
Almost forgot. “How many deaths would be acceptable to pay for universal health care, for example?”. Good framing cynical. But to reframe the question back to you, how many deaths would be acceptable not to have universal heath care?
OK, let’s assume those things ARE a part of social contract (NOT: hours I work and bennies I receive are determined by my employment contract). Where socialists like you come into play?
And, FYI, “zalupa” is vulgar Russian for glans penis, that is, dick head. Care to provide figures from a REPUTABLE source?
No, YOU answer the goddamn question first.
No need to yell and curse.
Sorry, I do not understand your question. Would you please re-phrase or elaborate? As for Sarah, you underestimate this person. Sorry again, I did not know the translation. Thanks for the FYI.
I fucking yell and fucking curse whenever I fucking feel like it. Now, let’s get back to our discussion, shall we? Or do you give up?
OK. Assuming the things you listed ARE good (Social Security clearly isn’t), and assuming they ARE a part of the social contract (arguably not), what is the role of socialists in implementing them?
FYI, 8 hour work day was introduced by evil capitalist bastard Henry Ford, just to give you an example off the top of my head.
Now, Lockean concept of social contract is an interesting one. First, I don’t remember signing anything. Can you produce a copy of that contract with my signature? No? Thought so. Second, contract includes mutual exchange of promises. I don’t recall promising anything to the “society”, nor do I remember “society” promising me anything, either. Third, if you are talking about contract, why is that so that “society” can unilaterally modify its end of the bargain? And what is “society”, anyway? Sorry, the concept of social contract doesn’t fly. Hasn’t been flying for the last couple of centuries, at least.
My role is the same as any citizen. To be as informed as possible, and participate in the political process. A good example is the recent attempt by the Bush administration to overhaul(abolish) Social Security. I wrote letters to my representatives expressing my opposition to their scheme. Many thousands of people did the same as well as a number of organizations such as AARP. Everyone knew that the numbers predicting the collapse of SS didn’t add up. Nor did the administrations plan to privatize. Their plans just couldn’t be justified. The Bush administration had to back down in the face of overwhelming opposition.
“Social contract” is merely a convenient term that describes a whole range of actions that prevented the country from sliding into anarchy during the 1930’s. Either industry would be nationalised, or the needs of the working class would have to be addressed. We chose a mixture. Programs such as Social Security, the WPA and labor laws provided an orderly way to sort everything out. And as luck would have it, just in time to confront a real menace.
P.S. Henry Ford introduced 8 hour shifts and paid $5.00 a day in an attempt to keep unions out. Some industries were alredy on 8 hours.
When you calm down a bit. Jeez what a temper.
Givin’ up?
Uh-huh. Maybe you’re even correct. What you still fail to show is that assorted socialists have any valid reason at all to claim all of the above as their achievement.
cynical, I believe you are making some assumptions that make your questions seem absurd. The deaths you are referring to are the results of tyrany rather than an economic or political philosophy. Many countries have socialistic governments and many more have socialistic institutions mixed with a capitalistic economy. These countries have no deaths attributable to the implementation of socialistic institutions or programs. These are peaceful countries that are relatively efficient. Their citizens appear to be reasonably satisfied. So how do you suppose that the implementation of a universal health care plan would result in deaths?
cynical, As far as I am concerned there is no glory to be claimed here. There is no Socialist Party of any consequence. There is no Great Socialist Leader. The only socialist in Congress is Bernie Sanders, and few people outside of Vermont have even heard of him. Few of the people who defended Social Security were socialists. Almost were Democrats and Republicans. They understand that the Bill Of Rights and Constitution imply a “social contract” that puts people before profit.
