I don’t know how it was in GDR, but I personally know many people who say that they enjoyed the life under communistic rule in GDR more than now.
As for 0% - don’t say bullshit. The pictures you see above represent the usual life of the Soviets. There’s no any propaganda there.
These photos certainly look like those in my wife’s family albums during her growing up years in the 70s and 80s. Yes, she said some basic items were’nt always available, but they could generally get all they needed, and they had a good home, a car, and good clothing.
My wife enjoyed all her years in USSR, Ukraine and Russia and we sometimes talk about going back.

This is how we lived. We lived happy, secure, moderate life and we had moral ideals and non-materialistic goals. I live in the US for many years by now, and the degradation and immorality I see around, not to mention the other things that come with wild capitalism, like homelessness, etc are the horrors, really.
Why are there no old people?
Not only do Russians not smile, do they not have old people? Or have old people only come in style since the fall of the Soviet Union? Whats going on?
Yeah, after the collapse, all you see are old people now. But then again….this was the 70’s, the baby boom generation, so there was naturally more young poeple.

Old people are usually killed for their apartments. Sometimes immigrants from southern republics also cook shashlik from them.
A lot of males died in WWII… but today men lives on average 56!! not even 60!!
Go to Western Europe and you will see millions of very old people… please think for a moment about that…

By the way, during the seventies (the golden age of the Soviet Union), there was a stric control about drugs, and the insidence, quite small. But also, there was social and sexual education in schools (as far as i know).
P.S.: AIDS epidemic started in the 80´ when it was first faced (discovered) in the USA.

LSD? The stories I’ve heard make it seem like more were drinking brake fluid secretly drained from Russian trucks…that is until they went blind.
There were likely a good number of happy people…and a bunch who also really had it hard. What seem way more depressing to me are the images of Russia today…kids playgrounds falling to pieces, broken infrastructure, etc.
I love how people gang up on Yeltsin. Sure, blame someone else for your miserable life and non-existent future…it’s a lot easier than getting off your duff and doing something about it…legally, that is.
It’s the West that brought AIDS and immorality to Russia. I live in the US–most young people here are sluts, and it’s not uncommon to start having sex at young age. Multiple partners (at the same time), perversions, lewdness, random sex, one night stands, etc, all is rampant. In USSR it was very different. Most kids didn’t become sexually active until very late teens or even early 20s. The West brought dirt, pornography (that was illegal in USSR), lewdness to Russia–via Media propaganda. I always refused to believe in any conspiracy theories, but 12 years in the US made me a firm believer.
ps: The whole fuss about the dog reminds me of something one Russian TV anchor had told. He survived the Siege of Leningrad, and yeah, cats were on the menu there (that while they lasted). So, he used to catch them with fishooks and line. When British heard the story at some conference there was much usual pansy fuss. I want to see the same pple starve and what they say. I lol hard at PETA types–they wouldn’t last 2 days if they had to survive in nature, cause they’d quickly become dog or catfood.
Actually Russia has now one of the biggest AIDS problems in the western world. This is of course not in the newspapers.
And Russians in general do not smile a lot in public. Recently a graduate from Moscow University wrote a paper about this subject. Very brief : in W-Europe, when someone smiles to someone else on the street, it means, I mean no harm, I’m friendly and that how it’s interpreted. In Russia it is interpreted as : he’s pulling my leg, he’s making fun of me. In men/women interaction it has a strong sexual meaning, a lot more than in the west.
Russia is not part of the “Western World”.

I think that the Russian government newer gave a shit about it’s people, now, back in the Soviet times, ordinary people like me are blamed but what have i got to do with it? Then it surrendered and broke up the country, made unnecessary decision between Russians, Ukrainians and Belorussians. Who knows, maybe the pictures were taking by the Jewish members of their crazy communist party, from the first years of communist revolution Jews controled the comunist government and set up gulags to eliminate any Christian population. Why did communism prohibit religion in a very Christian country? Interesting question taking into the account that Jews controled 80% of the communist party in it’s early years.
I was born around the time of the break up of the Soviet Union and newer saw communism in my life and I just can’t understand why so much bullshit happened in the history, how could people not stand up for themselves?

How is this any better or worse than what any given country, in any part of the world, puts on their website. Hell we get ads all the time here in America for places like Jamaica, Mexico, etc. They don’t show the poverty, etc. that they have. I was a pioneer in the communist USSR, and frankly it wasnt all that bad. I got some scars from that time from falling and fighting, we skipped school, hated our teachers, tried to get together with girls, and i actually believed in Russia, and i had a good life, so I don’t know what all the propaganda is all about, it was a good time… “communism” didnt affect me all that much, no evil people. life’s life

What the Russian society of that time didn’t have was people who DIDN’T believe in the country…they were all in jail or dead. It’s those kind of people who strive to make a place better. When in reality Communism, which sounds great in books, is only trading one group of thugs for another. I like picture #18. It’s as if they’re saying, to the West and to themselves, “Look, we have television also! And modern furniture!” However, the illusion is somewhat damaged when you realise that 1. the television is not on, 2. there is no reflection in the glass, and 3. it is in fact a false television painted on a piece of wood.

For Canadians over 45, many of them are household names - Vladislav Tretiak, Alexander Yakushev, Alexader Maltsin, plus Anacin, Kuznutsov, etc. I remember these names still 35 years later.

You didn’t have Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull, who could give you an additional advantage because they were prime players, I think. But you intentionally injured Valery Kharlamov, our best player. I was a kid back then and don’t remember the series, but I do remember the names of the Canadian players as well. I’m pretty sure that the “no sex in the USSR” issue was discussed many times, but I’m going to explain it one more time anyway. In the Soviet Union, the word “sex” (not a Russian word obviously) meant “pornography”. What that woman meant, when she said this historical phrase on the Donahue-Pozner show, “There’s no pornography in the USSR”. And she was right. Making or distributing porngography was a crime.
This pics tell the truth, and I’m the witness, being born in the USSR. Western everyday media and propaganda are full of lies. Life in Russia and USSR were the happiest years. Sure, you and everyone else willing to sell their souls to the system. Party members, high ranking military officers, politburo members, people who didn’t think twice about reporting their fellow citizen’s suspicious activities to the KGB had everything. They had cars, nice apartment and luxuries. I’m not Russian but I grew up in country behind the Iron Curtain, I know how it worked. In the early 80’s we lived in the capital of that country which I don’t wish to name. Every morning on my way to the school I walked by a house that everyone simply called the “Russian building”.
In that house lived a few high ranking Soviet Army officers with their family. Everyday on my way to school I saw 2 or 3 black Chaika’s with the driver out front (who was obviously a Russian army private) waiting for their passenger. I didn’t really started questioning their presence in my country until I was 13 or so, but the answer wasn’t there. We were occupied by the Soviet Army until the day their empire collapsed. So excuse me if I hate everything the Russian Empire ever stood for.

I am interested in the photographs. Although, things are drab, I notice how clean things are in the old Soviet Union. Also, there is a sense of order you don’t find in the USA.
Nice photographs, although I never had the pleasure of aa visit to the USSR, I have been to Russia and I have spoken to a lot of people who were born and lived in the USSR, very few of them prefer the life they have now so I can only guess that communism worked better than capitalism in Russia at least.
People say that communism in the USSR was a dictatorship yet the people were able to overthrow the communist government.
I have never heard of such a success of changing the government in a so called “free” democratic country, maybe all these “free world” citizens should think about that next time they wish to hate a country for not having the same form of government they use.
My personal thought is that the people of the USSR wanted change and the they got it, be careful what you wish for.
Again, I had, for many years, seriously considered visiting Russia. Apparently I was under the impression that Russia was “just a few years behind” the western world. It may be, economically, but psychologically it’s lost. Lost in the “Soviet” mindset. I have appreciated these blog entries and they have opened my mind considerably. There is no way on God’s green earth would I go there now. Too many people lost in a time warp. Too many people who can’t see their way out…

It’s very easy to say it was better in early days than now. Of course you think the Soviet Empire was the best when you was totaly unaware of the world outside. If you got any news from the West it was never unedited or reported by independet journalists. Always it had to pass the cencour in the newsagencies controlled by the Communist Party to not give “information that could damage your mind” or to not let you have slightest chance to re-think if the socialistic empire is a paradise on Earth or not. Not only news from foreign countries thus your own country must pass the cencour. To keep people inside a country with force and not let them say och think the free word can only end with a huge collapse sooner or later. And that’s what happened. Blame the jews, blame Gorbatjov, blame Jeltsin. The fault aren’t theirs that the SSSR collapsed. People had enough together with economical collaps. The idea of communism is great but it has been treated in a catastrophic way where a small group of people could make huge bennefits.

there were good times and bad. i remember going to a park near my house, and thinking i’m so lucky to be born in the soviet union, that no other child in the world was as lucky as me. i look back at the pictures and see the derelict, unsafe playground and shudder at just the thought of my son playing in such a place. say what you want.. it sucked. even if it didn’t seem so at the time, it still sucked.

After living in and visiting this country on occasions and seeing life beyond the ritz of Moscow I can only say that the shock and dismay is one of utter disbelief. I ask myself how a country that has such wealth can allow its people to be persecuted and live below poverty. The average salary of a medical Dr is $150 a month, that’s right $150 not $1500 or $15000 just a measly $150. However consumables are no cheaper in price to that of which we pay in Easter Europe.
That asks a question, where does all the money go, a country so rich in minerals and holding one of the worlds largest oil reserves. Well the answer is that it goes to drive corruption. Russia is the most corrupt country in the world today. Fat arrogant billion Aires such as Roman Abramovich take the money from the poor. They take the bread from the mouths of millions of starving people that survive and I mean survive. If you are an average Russian in need of medical care you can forget it, you will be left to rot literally and lie in your excrement in a pre war hospital bed unless you pay up to ensure that the Dr’s and nurses take care of you and give you attention. Is that the way it should be, well in Western Europe we would not stand for that kind of life, we would protest and humanitarians would come to our aid. Not in Russia, protest and if you are lucky you may end up in Jail for the rest of your life or even murdered.
Russians as a whole are scared, a proportion wish for the rich life so much that we enjoy in the rest of the world that they kill the parents off just to make a claim to a property or some belongings. The place stinks and those of us that go and stay in the expensive hotels, boost local industry and believe that we are helping are only helping the rich get richer. I beg you to go and see real life, away from the razzle and dazzle and see what Russia really is.
In nature a beautiful country, in minerals rich and healthy but for the rest worst than a third world country allowing its people to suffer and die the most painful and horrible deaths.
Why do we put up with it?? Well most western governments plead ignorance or wish for a share of the natural resources, that is why.
Please please help the real Russian people and stop trading with a dictorial state that drives the highest global corruption. Help the people!!!

That’s what I keep on telling to the Western world - stop feeding the monster. Russian corruption can’t survive a day without Western banking system; that’s where all the money stolen from ordinary Russians end up - on private accounts abroad.
