Subway Made of Dirigible

dirigible used in metro construction 1

This man on the pic above was the Russian scientist Tsiolkovsky. Some people in Russia call him the “father” of Russian space program. He also invented the hard-bodied dirigibles and published his works about such models right before foreign scientist Zeppelin, though the name of the later is more associated with dirigibles.

But what’s interesting is that some times later after the construction of those hard bodied aircrafts started, the Soviet state cut the financing and some of them were left unfinished. So Russian people have found another use for large steel “skeleton” frames of the dirigibles - they used them in the subway construction. For example these photos below are shots from one of the subway stations in Moscow. One can clearly see the remains of dirigible implanted in the metro station. If to use some imagination you can find yourself not deeply underground but high in skies, while waiting for the next train.

Циолковский был очень умный мужик!!!это он предложил летать в космос на многоступенчатой ракете.

Yes, he calculated that in order to leave Earth’s orbit, rocket must be constructed in multiple stages.
He also suggested that, for such rockets, liquid fuels are much more suitable than solid fuels.
Exactly what we are using today.
And he came to this conclusions in 19th century!

I dare to say, that Russian Empire had essential knowledge about space flight even before communists came to power!

    2. Fascinating! Tsiolkovsky was a true pioneer in aerospace technology. Also very resourceful of the Russian engineers building the Metro. In contrast to the rigid framed and metal skinned airship envisioned by Tsiolkovsky, the ПОБЕДА (Victory) appears to be a non-rigid airship with a fabric envelope. Please, more photos of the Tsiolkovsky airship model.

    3. clown says:

This is “Mayakovskaya” metro station in Moscow. (Named after Mayakovsky, revolutionary poet, motherfucker and total loser in general). It’s made of concrete and some steel was used for decoration. Design of this station got a presigious design award somewhere (sorry, I think all the design is a shit so I can’t recall exact award name and location).

No Zeppelins were used for construction and no Tsiolkovskys were harmed while building this metro station.

    4. Petrikauer says:

Is it true that some elements of Moscow subways decorations were stolen from the Orthodox church?

    7. Pavlo says:

    8. GM says:

Mayakovskaya is a beautiful station, but it is also notorious for being one of the deepest. My grandmother slept in it several nights during the war, as it was used as a bomb shelter for people living in Moscow. Also, Stalin had a famous meeting in this station during where, when he announced that he wasn’t leaving Moscow despite all of the rumors.

I am pretty sure the bit about the dirigible frames used in construction is nonsense - why would that do that? The metal shown in the photos is clearly not structural …

    9. Sarah Asimov says:

Spectacular! I wish they still made stuff like this today, contemporary architecture just cannot compete; It blows.

    10. aerocrat says:

…and AIRSHIP also is mean derigable

    11. aerocrat says:

First of all - the article about Moscow’s Subwayis decoration from airship of Tsiolkovsky is main. My text is situated in my russian blog of LiveJournal, but you may read it via web-translater HERE

    12. Mo says:

This article is bullshit. An airship skeleton could have never been used in the building of a metro station. It is too weak to support the hundreds of tons lying on top of the station. It is all just nonsense.

    13. Kazakh says:

      This article is bullshit.

    14. aerocrat says:

Repeat for stupid fools: Moscow subway station Mayakovskaya WAS made with metallic constractions of rigid airship - 30 meter prototype which Tsiolkovsky’d buit. The inventor died and this project was died too.
The metallic arcs are load-carrying structures of Tsiolkovsky airship/dirigible (not blimp - becouse rigid…)
