the first bunch of pictures where really cool looking with the old bones of planes and the cool looking new style buildings in the back ground
then it got depressing with the ugly buildings being built all around it.
the gov should step in and say only cool buildings allowed!!!
Does anyone know the location where these photos were taken?
Like my American comrade from Kansas, I’d like to know too where these particular photos were taken.
I found the graveyard on google earth. South Moscow with airport sign of CENTRAL. look for colorful round building.
It is definately the place cause you can see the shadow of the curved building.
One more example of failure of Soviet State/Russia as global Superpower… Now it’s only power is aeging collection of nuclear weapons… Just a bitter fact…
So what would you call the boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tuson? I call it wasted $ billions. Another bitter fact.
Just as note here about D-M. Besides being highly managed, the “boneyard” has been a resource. In the not too distant past, the A-10 was pulled out of retirement and used again in combat. On a regular basis, D-M sells scrap at auction.
I just found out the C-141 Starlifter (cago jet) that I worked on has been retired. Feel a bit saddened by that.
There may be some waste, but those “air frames” don’t just set and bask in the desert sun.
it’s not really a boneyard, but rather a preservation..
all the aircraft there are either scrapped or preserved..
many many of them can be returned to operational status.. not like this rusted russian turds

This is a graveyard, and the planes that are rotting there are just so old that there is no sense in conservation (museums are full of those anyway). You have Mig 15, Mig 21, very old Sukhoi planes, a few old Mi helicopters models… None of those models are today in service with the army. Their glorious days are left in the late 50-s to late 70-s, today’s Russian Air Force uses much more advanced and technologically superior planes.
Oh, and when you speak about the ageing nuclear weapons, it really shows how uninformed you are about the real condition of the nuclear weaponry. Don’t believe every single word you hear on CNN, it’s bad for your brain cells.

These aircraft should be restored and preserved.
Its an aircraft museum in the south of moscow, the planes in these shots are ones deamed too damaged or being restored.

I would gladly purchase a couple of the Mig 21s and restore them if only someone will tell me how to obtain them.
Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth on this very interesting topic. What may now be considered as a colossal waste of money was, back then, considered to be extremely essential policy. The reason this place and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base has row upon row of neglected aircraft is that both sides saw a need to equip themselves as such. And as with all things, aircraft age and deteriorate. But these old planes can live again; one need only look at The Motoart Shop to see what can be done with various aircraft bits and pieces. If the right parties could have access to these places the possibilities could be endless…..
All theses planes are stored in Khodynka area of Moscow. It’s the former Central airport of Moscow. To go thete, go to metro station Dynamo then head west/south-west. The planes (and choppers) are stored outside with simple fences around. When I’ve been there (July 2007) there was just an old man to guard theses treasure. We asked him (he was only russian speaking) if it was possible to visit. He opened the fence and we paid 100rb/poeple to be free in the yard. planes are in very poor condition, but it’s possible to climb in most of them (want to know how it was to be tail-gunner in an Il-28, or pilot of Mi-24?)

Hi - really good web site you have created. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to publish a remark to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically pleasing. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed working with information processing systems and am trying to learn computer code in my free time (which there is never enough of lol).
