For the moment the most popular of them here is Vkontakte (“in contact”). It is often considered (without any official confirmation) that its design, style and architecture were “stolen” from Facebook.

Exclaiming Against Sexual Harassment

As an old Russian saying goes, there are two problems in Russia, fools and roads. But lately one more has popped up and it is surely not a futile one. Since the fall of the Soviet Union there is a serious issue still gnawing all the countries of FSU. Corruption. And recently in the center of the capital of Ukraine, right at the entrance of Ministry of Cultural Affairs in Kiev, there was held a protest against sexual harassment in colleges of the country. And the girls’ approach was not as commonplace as it usually happens but a saucy and even kinda bizarre one.
Old good days

Everybody knows that times of Soviet Union were really tough ones because of many different things. Shortage of goods in stores, low wages, and all the products were the same. But there was something really dear and open-armed back then. Many people living now in entirely different country miss those times hardly.
History of Kremlin Stars

Stars appeared on Kremlin tower not long time ago. There were golden symbols of tzarism, double eagles, in the center of the country until 1935.
From 1600’s four Kremlin towers(Troitskaya, Spasskaya, Borovitskaya, Nikolskaya) were decorated with Russian state organization symbols – enormous golden double eagles.
Right after Revolution a question about replacement double eagles on red stars for Kremlin towers arose. But such replacement would cost a lot that’s why it wasn’t done for the first years of the Soviet time.

Wooden Chip Artist

The bird seems frozen. The wings are spread wide. Looking so alive, it seems almost unbelievable that it is made of cembra pine wood chips. Artist Sergey Bobkov spent half a year to produce this wonderful eagle, working with practically no days off, 10 to 12 (and sometimes even 14) hours a day. No wonder! It took about 7 thousand feathers to make the plumage! But it is definitely worth it – the result does not differ much from its living prototype. Artist’s collection consists of all kinds of birds and animals: life-size sables, squirrels, owls and so on.
Worker and Kolkhoz Woman

This monument called Worker and Kolkhoz Woman (Rabochiy i Kolkhoznitsa) was made for one of studios in VDNKH and first time displayed in Paris in 1937. There was hold a competition for the post of a chief architect and one of the famous Soviet architects at that time, V. I. Mukhina, won the contest. The memorial of an impressive size was created. But while transporting the statue from France to Russia after the exhibition it was heavily damaged.
USSR: Survival Kit

It is a common belief that the USSR was a closed country from both inside and outside and authorities were keeping iron curtain stay still during the whole existence of the country. But this insight here is to bring these delusions over.

Epic Fail

Long long ago when future seemed to be so distant and dim, people of the Soviet Union dreamt a lot and cherished a bunch of illusions about fantastic makings of the future. And straight 50 years ago, on the eve of New Year, one of most famous Russian newspapers published a special edition. Group of journalists-dreamers took their risks and tried to predict how it’s going to be 50 years after, in 2010.
