How the Salt Is Mined (And Not Only Kitchen Salt!)

When you are 1500 feet deep, there’s no wind, there’s no ambient sound, and there’s no sunlight as well (no wonder!). However, ride on the elevator doesn’t take too long – during these seconds you virtually see your whole life in front of your eyes. The open cage whooshes downwards swinging around like crazy and your guts really seem to come all the way up to your throat!
When you’re out of the cage, you arrive to a small platform, where multiple tunnels are intercrossed. These tunnels are made for so called “taxis”, small diesel-powered vehicles that can transport 2 to 12 men, depending on their designation. The mine uptake is only a drop in the sea of shafts, since there are lots of tunnels, which lead to actual mining sites. The most distant longwall (which is the name of the place of actual mining) is 17 miles away from the elevator! The “taxi” drives at speed of 20-25 mph, so it takes quite some time for some miners to get to work.
Coalmine Insight

There were lots of articles about some plants and factories, but unfortunately most of them were deserted and abandoned. Today we will bring you an insight into the equally time-worn and moth-eaten plant but just with one little difference. It is not abandoned. At least not to the death.
Old good days

Everybody knows that times of Soviet Union were really tough ones because of many different things. Shortage of goods in stores, low wages, and all the products were the same. But there was something really dear and open-armed back then. Many people living now in entirely different country miss those times hardly.
Popov – Champion, Marconi – Impostor

Over a hundred years there is an argument in the world concerning real radio inventor. But one needs to do a little research to make it clear that Marconi had simply read Popov’s papers.
The first known evidence for Marconi to be the radio inventor appeared on June 2, 1896 with his patent application to the UK Patent Office for a discovery, 13 months after Popov had delivered his lecture on radio themes before the Russian Physical and Chemical Society members in St. Petersburg on May 7, 1895. That secret patent application #12039, inspired as they say by the UK Patent Office’s Principal examiner William Preece, the Chief Electrical Engineer of the British Post Office, however contained no diagrams and charts performed by Marconi himself but his lyrical sketches only.
Wooden Chip Artist

The bird seems frozen. The wings are spread wide. Looking so alive, it seems almost unbelievable that it is made of cembra pine wood chips. Artist Sergey Bobkov spent half a year to produce this wonderful eagle, working with practically no days off, 10 to 12 (and sometimes even 14) hours a day. No wonder! It took about 7 thousand feathers to make the plumage! But it is definitely worth it – the result does not differ much from its living prototype. Artist’s collection consists of all kinds of birds and animals: life-size sables, squirrels, owls and so on.
Distilled Water Machine

Municipal journalists were preparing a report about a local constructor. He showed some of his works and one of them was the machine for water purification. Let’s watch!
Old Russian Humor in Ogonek

“Retro” is in fashion today, so we will look through the old issues and the new ones to see what was funny many years ago and pretty recently. It turned out that that the jokes are like dresses- the older they are the less attractive they become, and we laugh now at something what was serious and important then.
USSR: Survival Kit

It is a common belief that the USSR was a closed country from both inside and outside and authorities were keeping iron curtain stay still during the whole existence of the country. But this insight here is to bring these delusions over.
Russia’s Seven Wonders

There are seven wonders of the world, but most of them were already destroyed either by the hands of humans or by the cruel passing of time. And last year a group of some Russian TV-channels, newspapers and radio stations hold an official opinion poll and discovered what kinds of real wonders Russia has. Anyone could participate in the poll taking votes via internet or SMS services. So, the seven best-looking and really fascinating places were chosen. Here they are:
