Centrifuge that Costed Eleven Tons of Gold and Preparation for a Journey to the Stars in a Star City

This posting is devoted to the review of the routines Russian space travellers undergo before they reach for the stars. All the activities are happening in the “Star City” – 25 km away from Moscow. This place trains space heroes since 1960. They strive to prepare them for all the dangers and possibilities of the space travel. Let’s see how it goes.

Most of the machines here are produced as a single unit in the world.  For example this is the biggest in the world centrifuge. The Swedish company made it for Soviet Union and received 11 tons of gold as a payment.

For this huge money they made a unique machine that can imitate 30G overload rotating body of man in all directions.

Also there is possibility to change temperature, humidity, pressure etc inside of the cabin.

While the cosmonaut is rotating there experiencing huge G’s seven doctors control his body measurments.

This attraction is also open for general public. For a “small” payment of around $1200 you can get a few minute ride on this monster.

Then another thing there is a huge pool with a space ship inside. It’s 12 meter deep and can fit there full sized ISS modules duplicates they have there in stock. Before they used “MIR” station copy but threw it away when it got out of service.

Cosmonauts use space suits inside pool with lead load mounted to achieve zero-floating.

Underwater conditions are mimicking zero gravity.

When they need to change configuration of the station they raise it and rebuild.

Those are the landing capsules training machine of modern landing SOYUZ space ship modules.

And this is a docking device to connect SOYUZ to ISS.

This place looks like a museum but it is not. Many of the spaceship copies were actually used right now for training of future cosmonauts.

However visitors are around as well.
