The Exercises of Engineering Troops

In late May 2015, engineering troop exercises took place in the city of Murom, in the Vladimir region. A 250-meter wide river named Oka was forded as part of the exercises – quite a spectacular event, and we present here a photo report about how the Oka is crossed not only by the 40-ton tanks but also a 100-ton strategic missile system.

The official name of the event was: “Special tactical exercises with the military engineering units to fulfill the tasks of engineering support in fording water obstacles. Army and attack aircraft were involved to complete the task. The exercise included a crossing of training mobile ground missile complex “Yars” with a test weight using a pontoon bridge of double width PP-2005″

Let us explain:

Exercises on the ground – a form of tactical and special training of personnel in the field. The objectives of the sessions are to develop skills in organizing combat operations, fire control, control of units and subunits, methods of development and methods of action on the battlefield on the ground, to develop the ability to handle weapons and military equipment, as well as the skills of their application.

And what are the engineering troops:

Engineering troops – special forces, intended for engineer support of combat operations units, formations and associations of all kinds of armed forces. Engineering troops consist of formations, units and subdivisions of different purposes: engineering-sapper, assault, bridge building, transport landing force, camouflage, civil engineering and many others.

In combat, engineering troops perform the most difficult tasks of engineering support that require special training of personnel, the application of various engineering equipment and engineering ammunition.

The main tasks of the engineering troops are: preparation and maintenance of paths for moving troops, providing of crossing water obstacles, providing of overcoming obstacles and demolitions, construction and masking of fortifications, barricade devices (including mines) in the direction of the enemy movements, engineering exploration of the area, equipment of control stations, mining, and water cleaning.

Legend of the teachings: the enemy went away to the east bank of the Oka and tried to take up defensive positions. Motorized elements of the engineering units are fording the river, and go on the offensive. The crossing is covered by aircraft in the air.

A combat reconnaissance patrol goes to the coast occupied by the enemy.


The patrol is armed with the latest BTR-82A.


Having crossed the river in a few minutes, the patrol started performing combat missions.

The PTS-2 is able to carry 12 tons of cargo.

Motor boat BMK-460 is submerged on the Ural. Such boats tow the pontoons with cargo and hold pontoon bridges.

The PMM-2 ferries go into the water.

An MMP-2 dual ferry is able to transport loads up to 85 tons.

The task of these machines – installation of minefields in the direction of a possible enemy attack. It can lay a kilometer long antitank minefield in 10 minutes – quite an extraordinary task.

In fact, this is not a launcher but one of the rocket complex machines – tanker. But weight and size characteristics are the same.

Length of the bridge – 250 meters.

First tanks T-72 cross the bridge.

Capacity of pontoon bridge – 60 tons. One item of technique can weigh so much.

Convoy of armored infantry fighting vehicles passes.

The teachings are over, the enemy is defeated, all the equipment went back to the original bank.

Engineering troops have fully complied the task, ferried infantry units across the wide river. Bridges were made in full compliance with the regulations.

A new task was also successful, made in the interests of the Strategic Missile Forces – the crossing of the strategic missile system “Yars”.

    I observe they are possibly preparing to cross one of our big USA rivers. Maybe it will be the Mississippi. See you boys in Natchez.

    Would have been a Nazi-beater in WWII.

    Now? A swarm of surveillance drones and a couple of airdrops…

    Let’s just say that unless you’re ‘invading’ Odessa or someplace without electricity, you’re going to lose.
