23 Russian Empire Photos of the Late 19th Century

Russian Empire Photos of the Late 19th Century

Posted on December 27, 2015 by tim

A nice collection of late 19th century photos of the Russian Empire. It looks like a totally different world from how modern Russia looks now. At that time, Russia included such places as Helsinki and the whole of Finland, Warsaw and Poland. Much more area than now. Each picture has a caption but the captions are in French - though you can easily understand what they mean - like this on top says "Le Palais De Lamiraute" which translates into "Palace of Admiralty". Enjoy the view!

Page 22 : in the 19th century Königsberg was not part of the Russian Empire. In fact, it has not been part of Russia until 1945 and, if we follow Putin’s logic, it should be handed back to Germany as it is historically part of it (for even longer than Crimea has been part of Russia !)

Nice pictures. Hopefully, most of these cities are not anymore, and will never be anymore part (when they have also never been, like Königsberg) of any imperialist Russia. Hopefully for their inhabitants…

Beautiful! They remind me a little of the pre-Revolution era pictures taken by Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii. It’s like looking at a lost world.

Did you find anywhere who took these pictures and what methods were used to take them?

Seriously??? TWO images per page spread over SEVENTY-FOUR pages!!! I’m sorry, but I just don’t have the time or the inclination to click through that many pages. This is just stupid, and loses your site many visitors. Please post at least 12 images per page, which would be far more acceptable, AND attract more visits.
