November 5th was a birthday of this powerful Russian machine, T-90 “Vladimir” tank, that was put into operation in 1992. It was created in the late 1980s or early 1990s as a deep modernization of the T-72B tank. The combat vehicle was named after Vladimir Ivanivich Potkin, the chief engineer of the tank.

In the period from 2001 to 2010 T-90 was the top-selling main battle tank on the world market. In 2010 it cost 70 million rubles, in 2011 – 118 million. Since the end of 2011 the purchase of the tank was ceased. In September 2011 the public was presented with a new version of the T-90 tank in Nizhny Tagil – T-90SM.

T-90 has a classic construction with a driver’s compartment in the front, combat compartment in the middle, and an engine compartment in the rear. Crew of the tank consists of three members.

The main weapon of the T-90A (SM) is a 125mm smoothbore cannon which is chromized and provided with an ejector, thermal control coating and a muzzle reference system. The length of the barrel is 6 meters. The T-90 fires four types of ammunition – armour-piercing, subcaliber, cumulative, high-explosive fragmentation shells and guided weapons loaded in any proportions.

Auxiliary ammunition of the T-90 consists of a coaxial gun, anti-aircraft machine-gun mount, and personal weapons of the crew.

The T-90 has strong cannon proof armour protection. The main material the body is made of is armor steel, the front of the turret within the target angle ±35° is made of combination armour.

Lovely tank, Always loved those soviet tanks like the T-55 (Which the Romanian TR-85 is based on) the T72, the T80(less for that one) and the T-90(my favorite), Incredible that it didn’t turn into an American M1A1/M1A2 Abrams T90 and eventually bringing up the T14 Armata into it trash talk…
