Russian Federal Highway LENA

Posted on December 2, 2014 by tim

A few years ago, we had this Russian road called “Federal Highway LENA” which runs for 1163 km. Some parts of it are paved, and some parts are a swamp all of the time. In 2012, they decided to upgrade the road but from the photos of the place, it looks like it still isn’t fixed. Let’s see.

Not to worry, an Abrams tank couldn’t go through that, either.

  4. Vijay says:

That is a really sad road. If you have roads like that, you don’t need any enemies really.

  5. Richard S. says:

They should lay sawdust and wood chips on the muskeg areas, place gravel on top, pack it hard, build culverts and water run-offs and pave the road. That should fix the problem.

I remember seeing this years ago (google “russian highway from hell”). Those pics were uploaded in 2007. It’s sad to see that after 7 years nothing’s changed…

  7. Carpon says:

The country should invest more on highways and less on armament and invasion of neighbouring countries….

We have a good proverb: “There are two main troubles in Russia – fools and roads”
And her continuation: “Yesterday in Government the first trouble discussed the second trouble”

Russia want to be considered a world super-power, but it’s completed rotten inside. More than that, the Ukrainian war costs and the international restrictions, will lead sooner or later this country to collapse .

That is one hell of a massive task to make this road possible to drive on with a Smart… How can the Russian government call that a road… the really are taking their people for dummies…

40 years ago I travelled on a similar road (their main road) in the French Congo, from Point Noire to Brazzaville and back. When it was raining it was nearly as bad, but after a week of sun it was no problem. In those days there were only 2 or 3 trucks with 3 driven axles going on the road a day. So when you got stuck it could be a long wait for help. A folding spade was your first aid and best friend.

But that was Congo, No hard winters with solid frozen ground there. The problem is when this melts. Usually Sibiria is frozen October to May.
