Russian Khokhloma: Red and Black on Gold

Posted on November 22, 2014 by team

Every Russian knows what khokhloma is. It’s an old Russian handicraft having its own distinctive features: wooden utensils and furniture are painted green, black and red on gold. Maybe they are not very functional, but they definitely carry some magic. The city called Semenov (Nizhny Novgorod region) where, Russian matryoshka dolls are also made, considers itself to be the place where “Khokhloma” was born. Other cities may argue, but Semenov still has workshops for creating miracles of khokhloma.

Russian blogger Yaroslav took the opportunity to visit one of them and take these interesting pictures.

There is a nice smell of fresh wood in the shop where workpieces are made.

Machines are old, made in Germany. They still do a lot by hand. Machines are needed to rotate workpieces, nothing more.

Remains of the Soviet past.

Workpieces rotate at high speed and the master makes them hollow. They almost never have defects.

Workplaces are enclosed by metal gauze to keep shavings inside.

Working process under strict control of the nation’s leaders..

Making ladles.. Another swan will have a head soon.

Some instruments are the same as those used for making matryoshka dolls.

These guys are standing at the door of the painting shop.

To make a surface of a future product sticky they use drying oil. Thrice.

Now workpieces need to dry.

The next step is tin coating…

… which is followed by art painting itself.

This work is very difficult.

These are not Christmas decorations but jewel-boxes.

The sterlet is drying..

This one is for baby bathing.

The bird of happiness…

This one may be used as a picture or a tray.

See the tail?

Yes, many years ago Russians drank tea like this…

In the painting shop.

Another wonderful bird is drying.

We hope this factory will survive no matter what and we will see some more pictures from there one day.

Just masterful work. What a shame that more of it isn’t seen outside websites such as these. I admire craftspeople who can do such marvelous pieces…I hope it doesn’t become a lost art either.
