Talking about the submarines, here are a few photos from Russian cities where they are being built. Slava, the photographer (by the way I like his work very much, and find almost each of his series very attractive – so we feature him here often) has travelled there and now we can see the city too. It’s the biggest shipbuilding docks in Russia, and nuclear u-boats are built there too. Let’s see!

So this dock is the largest in the country, and over 25,000 people work here. It’s main purpose is to build submarines for Russia. Since its inception in 1939, this place has produced 131 nuclear and 36 diesel submarines and 45 regular ships. In the 1970s, it was building the biggest “Typhoon” class submarines, which were in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest submarines in the world. They are huge.

There are three hundred different departments in this corporation and it occupies more than 741 acres of land (or over 300 hectares).

The docks are so huge that it can built ships as wide as 40 meters (or 120 feet) and the total area of the docks is over 100,000 square meters.

Since Russia has a cooperative agreement with India, large Indian ships can be serviced here too – as they did in 2013 with an Indian aircraft carrier.

And in 2014 the construction of three new large nuclear submarines was started here.

This particular one in the photo above is a Typhoon class submarine – they are the largest u-boats in the world.  To build them they have Hangar #55 – officially the largest roofed dock in the world.

Those subs can carry the newest super sonic missiles, called “Bulava”, which can hit targets as far as 9,000 km away, and this particular boat is the fastest among all Typhoons – it can go as fast as 50 km/h under water.

And here you can see the Russian battleship,”Admiral Nakhimov”.

Now being renovated and upgraded.

And now a few shots of the city itself:

It’s called Arkhangelsk and it’s a White Sea port.  There are over 350,000 people living here.

And it was founded in 1584 on the order of Ivan the Terrible.

Yes, Slava is good. The historical street pictures were amazing to see. He captured teh moment well. He also doesn’t get too technical, so I didn’t feel like I was sitting in an engineering class.
